Seeing as Mementos has now become Tartarus 2.0 in the audio department I figured I might as well put this together. Perfect for biking in underground subways while gorging on some delicious pancakes.
This video combines all versions of the Mementos leitmotif from Persona 5 Royal into one big piece, with seamless transitions between each layer. Enjoy!

Did akechi ever have access to mementos? I was under the understanding that he only attacked people with palaces, and he didn't have morgana to tell him about mementos until he joins the phantom thieves

Akechi brings you to Mementos as a part of his social link in Royal to have a 1on1 fight with Joker. Morgana doesn't go with them and neither do the others. He did access mementos without a transportation method, albeit during a cutscene.

YoshiMaster remember that one guy who was driving the train in the very beginning of the game? There’s a big chance he didn’t have a palace and prob only had a lil sick desire/corruption so his shadow would show in mementos

That’s low key scary though XD imagine driving into a dark, empty mementos floor. All of a sudden you hear “ring a round a Rosie” song being sung, and from the shadows creeps Akechi riding slowly towards you on his bicycle, his dark, red eyes lighting the shadows around.

Base Mementos is Boring and repetitive, just like Real Life, which is why I enjoy it
That's why i love the original mementos theme. Not that i have ANYTHING to complain about with the new ones. ;)

You see, when people complain about og Mementos they forget this keyword “Theming” and how it ties into the way Atlus designed the game. People are often so dull and two dimensional in their desires, I would like to see more artistically inspired criticisms in the future. Oh and love the new themes for Mementos btw.

Original: Shows the boring, dull, everyday life of the public.
Upper Layer: More upbeat, shows that things are picking up for the Phantom Thieves now that the main group has been established.
Middle Layer: Disorganised track, showing the internal discord within the group (This is at about the time of Okumura's palace)
Under Layer: Upbeat once again, as things are picking up, but not in a good way, as the public is ever more wanting to see the Phantom Thieves dead, of course caused by Akechi.
New Layer: Alteration of the old Mementos theme, sometimes cuts out/changes certain melodies, shows how Maruki's influence has disturbed the flow of things.

@@theoriginofsound3437 I think the new themes fit the atmosphere. The more you go deep down the more you can feel the disaster is near, crawling in the corridor. As for the new layer, it is too close to the first layer (which is meh imo).

At that point, you go up to a safe room floor, and go up and down and up and down until Jose appears.
I've seen some interpretations for the progress of the Tartarus themes, but not really the same for Mementos, besides the first theme and the depths, so I'll try what I can(but it might suck)... [Obvious Spoiler warning]
Mementos in general is the representation of the people's cognition, preety much everyone in Tokyo takes the Subway on a daily basis in order to realize their activities, it's a place so ingrained in their minds and part of their day-to-day lives, which become repetitive and uneventful to most, while they start becoming distorted with their desires.
*The First Floor* (0:00) is monotonous and repetitive, just like daily life for the people distorted by Mementos' Treasure.
*Upper Layer* (1:20): Sounds just like what it is, a somewhat hollow and kindof monotonous palace with the apearance of a Subway.
*Middle Layer* (4:02): It sounds kinda off, like if there's something more to it than what we know(which does), the existance of Mementos in itself is still but a mystery, and it just keeps going down and getting more distorted, what really awaits at the bottom? and how far below is it?
*Lower Layer* (7:57): We have to be nearing the bottom(which we are), the distortions are even greater, at times you can even forget this was supposed to look like a Subway, and there's strong Shadows everywhere, just a little more remains.
*The Depths* _(Freedom and Security):_ [I know it isn't here, but whatever, it's technicly also Mementos] This is where everything leads to, like veins to a heart, you get to see just how disorted preety much everyone really is to just mindlessly follow what society dictates, it has undertones to Tokyo Daylight, because this is the dark underside of daily life up there, and the Phantoms are stuck in a situation where they have to steal the Public's Treasure right now.
*Third Semester* (10:42): The first theme, but with additions, it seems almost unnatural, and it kinda makes sense, given Maruki basicly making additions to reality almost artificially to acomodate to people's wishes. And it being a variation of the first theme kinda reflects that what Maruki is doing will ultimately do the same thing the Holy Grail was doing, turning people mindless and living uneventful repetitive lives

To me the New Layer feels like it's building up to the climax if that makes sense? Cause it's back to square 1 and the whole idea that the number 0 has infinite possibilities really hits me. Like you've come all this way only to be placed into third semester and basically be back at where you started because a certain final antagonist has more or less taken that past away from you and put you into a reality where the PT progress basically never happened. With this being the case it makes sense for the theme to be similar in rythm to the first theme in Mementos. In this reality the PT (inferrably)only changed Kamoshida's heart, therefore they never were recognized enough by the public to gain access to any of mementos's lower layers ~and music~ so it only makes sense that you're basically at the top of mementos again. Another thing I found cool is the trumpets little interlude sort of thing that it builds up to before the song loops. For some reason the whole trumpet part just gives me heavy Maruki feels, cause that part in particular reminds me of all the other themes revolving around him. You know how there are certain themes within the game that tie together with certain aspects? Like how hoshi to bokura to has the theme linked with our beginning, swear to our bones, and yaldaboath? When it comes to the third semester music style, the trumpet in New Layer just feels like it ties into that theme, as well as the recurring theme of questioning your morals as the trumpet seems uplifting yet sad, similar to the situation you're trapped in, but in the end the song loops back around to the original resolve of the PT
The thing with the new layer is that Our Beginning gets cut off every time it starts, instilling the feeling of something being there when it shouldn’t be anymore. Which makes this theme feel all the more unsettling. It’s like “the Metaverse is supposed to be gone but it’s not” as a song.

I fucking adore how Atlus saw the annoyance at the original Mementos track, made three new themes to give us hope, then brought the OG right back in a new form lmao
As I've seen many people say, Mementos' base game theme encapsulates the vibe of Mementos as a place whereas Royal's music is more about travelling through it. One is repetitive, unrelenting and just oozes grime while the other is much more determined and hopeful. Sure, the original might not have been the best for gameplay purposes - people got bored of it VERY fast - I appreciate what they were trying to do and it actually makes Royal work way better imo. All the people who slogged through the base game's Mementos and came to hate the theme would appreciate the new tracks even more and feel the fitting amount of dread the New Layer is meant to put in you, while at the same time appreciating what a damn bop of a remix it is.
OG Mementos was hated so that Royal Mementos could thrive.
Side note: It reminds me of classic villains having the last laugh over the fancy newer one, examples like O'Malley from RvB, Eggman from Sonic Lost World and Bowser in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. (Bowser gets a lot of badass redemption moments now that I think about it)

HUGE THIRD SEMESTER SPOILERS
Ok so the new layer song is very different from all the other layers because it takes the original p5 one theme and adds a few instruments. This actually fits the theme of 3rd semester really well. Maruki has added a layer of corruption onto the entire world, fulfilling everyone's greatest wishes. The world is there and you can see it, but theres... more, more that isnt right, and visually you can see it. Mementos isnt red anymore its white and littered with cables. Its Maruki's effect and power over the entire world and him becoming a god and changing mementos and thus the entire world as you know it. The music becoming a remix of the original is the best way to represent this

I readed someone's theory saying that the new mementos's floor sounds like a distorted version of the first one because it's basically the original mementos held on by duck tape that Maruki re-created.

I love that they put bits of "Swear to my Bones" in the two themes that you're guaranteed to hear after you've seen at least one second awakening.

As someone who was an ass to everyone and ignored confidants because I thought they were just little tiny perks that don't help much, I can confirm that you are not guaranteed to see a second awakening by then.

Ngl I didn't like the new themes at first because I thought they took away the kind of boring, repetitive feeling of Mementos in the original game, which I thought suited it quite well. But tbh these themes are so fucking good, I don't care anymore.
Honestly the new themes are good, but I'd prefer having OG Mementos, and then direct transition to New Layer for 3rd semester.
But man they all slap, Lower Layer and New Layer especially.
