I do an asinine amount of driving for my job, and only recently learned that these songs also fit with driving around, especially when it's windy and/or raining
I appreciate what Royal did for the music of Mementos. It starts off as a sluggish, repetitive, monotonous rhythm representing the soulless members of society "free from choice" as they follow the same tasks everyday while under Yaldabaoths control. As it progresses towards the second layer, a slight uplift begins to appear while the Phantom Thieves change the hearts of the people in mementos while still having the oppressive, three chord melody that plays throughout the first layer. When progressing to the third layer, more depth is added as mementos starts to become more distorted as the Phantom Thieves travel lower, pushing through with their uplifting theme until the fourth layer where everything leading up to this point assists the Phantom Thieves in becoming the hope and saviour that humanity needs to escape from Yaldabaoths submission. Maruki's "New Area", the music builds on the first layer of mementos while having the uplifting theme as mentioned prior but it isn't as bombastic. This represents Maruki's flawed vision of trying to help everyone while being blinded from the growing distortion that plagues his "new reality". The fact I was able to gather all of that information just from listening to the music is another reason why Shoji Meguro is a phenomenal composer.
I love how he composed the layers like it was at Tartarus in P3, instead of depth as you delve deeper into Mementos. The higher you climbed Tartarus more and more of the instruments adds up as it completes the music.
@Charon the Toaster It's literally so good... I've only ever experienced Royal's Mementos but honestly I absolutely love it. Instakill made it more fun but even without rank 7 Ryuji I think I'd have had a ton of fun
@Charon the Toaster It's also motivation for actually going in there and fighting, since if you stay there long enough and keep collecting things, you can buy some pretty good items. It's just more enjoyable. My one gripe is just the music stopping when combat starts. I want to jam to my upper layer jams while fighting stuff, cmon Persona :P
When first playing Royal I dreaded the return to mementos as that was my least favorite aspect of the original game but Royal changed everything as soon as their was alternate music tracks, the stamps and flowers, and especially the Ryuji insta kill move
I really like the transitions. What maybe would have been cool would be if you had built up a speed up/slow down of the the tempo of the previous song to sort of match the next? Great video anyways
Not as iconic as Tartarus and we know the "it represents the day-to-day/work culture of the Japanese" is all mere speculation but damn, so glad they actually gave Mementos an identity instead of hearing the same boring souless ass song you hear from the beginning, now you truly feel you're exploring a mysterious place hidden to the commoners eye
The track should have naturally evolved from the first to the last layer like Tartarus does. The new tracks in Royal in the middle floors of mementos are really refreshing but they don't have anything in common with the original track that everyone grew to hate from Vanilla.
The Abyss of Time theme was already released in the official soundtrack as a full mix (in fact I’ve yet to find the individual variations separately), but a visual accompaniment wouldn’t hurt
I'm considering adding this as an example to the TV Tropes page "Evolving Music". How would you describe the way the BGM changes with every other new area? I would very basically describe the Da'at version as effectively being a mashup of the original Mementos theme and another variant of the new one.
top: the phantom thieves have just started out, nothing much has changed in the public consciousness yet, the grind of daily life continues upper: the phantom thieves are gaining traction, the public are starting to notice them and are gaining hope from them, shown with the theme becoming faster and more upbeat middle: the phantom thieves are at their peak, the theme sounds slower, more laid back in a way, compared to the upper one, while they think they are reforming society and giving people hope, in reality they are doing nothing to free people and they remain chained, this time to the phantom thieves and not the government under: the phantom thieves have been discredited and have fallen from grace, this time they have to move, to change things quickly before shido gets into power and they get destroyed. the theme is now urgent, fast, the thieves are finding their resolve and purpose now new: despite maruki believing he can change the world and make everyone happy, he is just imprisoning them again, taking away their free will in exchange for blind happiness. the theme is very reminiscent of the first mementos theme, showing in a way that he is as bad as the people the thieves targeted before, just with good intentions this time god these are some massive stretches
The Upper/Middle/Under layer themes are completely different songs and don’t fit with the rest of Mementos. I get the original song was repetitive for a lot of people, but I just wish they remixed the song like they did with the New Layer, but for ALL the layers. Like Tartarus, the song is altered as you ascend the tower, but the core music is the same.
well, I imagine that they wanted to make the Mementos original theme as a "lobby" song like the Tartarus lobby is not the same song from inside, so the songs from layers sure progress as a remix from its core, except the last one being the "last journey" on Mementos seems a good to fit a triumphant remix theme from its origins like a reference yet distorted enough to feel like the vision from the owner, epic as any heist theme
I like to imagine that image of Akechi on a bike riding around in Mementos from time to time.
It makes my day

Actually the new tracks have the motif of the first layer, if you listen very closely. And the new layer brings it back full circle
It does change though. The base in upper layer is the original theme, and it carries through to the other ones
