OK. We're sorry if you own this lamp and LOVE it, but it's kind of become a joke over here at TSG headquarters for being that classic IKEA lamp. Great_Brittain24 I didn’t. I liked Becky’s version better than the inspiration. I detest 70s styles and revivals. I also dislike that particular stain. I thought the hooks were the best update.
The lamp upcycle looks so botched though. The cork is not straight, the table legs are not straight, the slit in the table is not straight... You'd be better off buying a different lamp :')

The table definitely would look better stained a dark brown, as well as the lamp shade either fabric dyed or recovered. I was so surprised she left those two things as is

The speaker cover is definitely distorting the audio enough for people who care. Maybe make every side a mesh panel to keep it open instead of creating a sound cave?
Yeah I agree and it would still be super cute with all four sides being the mesh panel
I would drill holes on the top of the box to let the sound out, as well as use the mesh fabric, because metal creates distortion and reflexion of the sound waves, specially so up close
or use actual wood woven caning for the whole thing because it has holes and isn’t metal which is SO distorting

While I agree, I'm going to argue that if you're buying those cheap ugly bluetooth speakers you probably don't care about audio quality.
I would have loved to have seen Kelsey stick with the original plan of the metal lamp shade & the exposed vintage bulb, not feeling the cork vibe to be honest...
Tyler Davis yeah I agree. That cork looked pretty janky where she had to piece it together. I get the vibe she was going for, I just think it ended up looking cheap.
Yeah I can’t say I was a fan. I hope they revisit this and try the metal shade and maybe stain the table a darker color to go with the black lamp!

the lamp part was like watching a 5-minute craft video, the entire time I was asking myself why because it was so bad but I just could not stop watching.

I was thinking, who needs to upcycle an over-the-door hook? It's basic, but is it worth the effort? But holy guacamole, the before & after is like night and day! The upcycled one looked so CHIC and it was a simple DIY with supplies I already own... so I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. I'm sorry I ever doubted y'all lol

once you have coats hanging on all the hooks, you won't even see the balls. Seems like a lot of work for something you never see.
I usually use over-the-door hooks for bags rather than coats, so I think it’s something I would diy because it’s easy enough to do and it’s cute
Yea I definitely called it stupid then changed my mind at the end I would make the balls gold and bedazzle the little piece st the top
I like everything but the lamp. I think y'all have to do this one again. The legs on the table are noticeably crocked. I know y'all aren't wood workers but you could have put the plates on and THEN the legs, that's the whole point of those plates is that you can screw and unscrew the legs. That would have made clamping easier, and thus allowed you to have things fall into square easier. It's clear that the preparation just wasn't there on this one, which is fine, that's something we all go through. I think you've got good ideas on this DiY upcycle, and the concept would be great for a dorm or small living space, but it's not as polished as I expect from y'all.
or just buy a slab of mdf or wood from a shop.. it's not super expensive and then it gives the option to actually drill in the legs which would immediately make it straight(er). Cool idea with the tray but err... perhaps not the best material for that diy..
I think it's a good idea. I do feel that the table top and leggs have to be sturdier wood and the hole and elite not so big but the ideavisva good one
the base of the lamp screws off so ideally she should have just made a hole in the centre of the tray that is slightly larger than the diameter of the lamp, slid the lamp pole through the tray and then screwed it back into the base. Much easier and looks better than the way-to-big hole/slit situation :(
Also pointing out that the hole in the top had a chip and wasnt really that great of a cut either. Maybe more sanding was needed but the wood they used was really thin anyway so idk how much u can sand it down until it becomes structurally worse. I think it really looked offputting. I hate that they use bare wood it looks so incomplete in projects. They should have stained it to match with the cork

The funny thing about the refillable bulk stuffs is that is what we USED to do pre-plastic. You went to your general store, you asked for X amount of flour, and it was either in a burlap or paper bag or you brought your container and filled it. It's going backwards but in a good way and for the best reasons. #weonlyhaveoneearth

My only complaint about bulk-food stores is for people with life threatening allergies. I can’t buy any of my foods at those type of stores, because my son is allergic to nuts. Stores don’t care about cross-contamination.
@@stacielliott3311 As someone who's also got a deadly allergy to some nuts. It's true... but also most grocery stores don't care either. In fact most places just don't care. I still get stuff from bulk-food stores (shout out to Bulk Barn and Saponetti), I just avoid the entire aisle with nuts.
Guillaume Couture-Lévesque in Canada, product packaging has very strict laws with “may contain” labels. Unfortunately, places like bulk barn (where I’m from) state that they cannot guarantee any products are completely in contaminated.
Andrea Moore plastic can only be recycled so many times and recycling is actually really bad to our environment because it uses more resources than making a new plastic bottle. At the bulk places you can use your reusable bags or jars that will last for years so no need to waste or recycle because you’ll just clean it and take it back in with you.
Y'all. The lamp? You know the series where you fix DIYs that weren't that great? The lamp definitely needs to be on that series. (And you can tell that you know it isn't great the entire time you are working on it and at the end, so I am not sure why you even included it in this video to begin with.)
I like that they show us their projects even when they don't turn out the best. It's all about inspiring people to DIY their own things - people can take the idea and improve upon it. And they showed a lot of the steps where they were figuring out how to attach the lamp shade, which is really helpful to someone who would run into the same problem, and that problem solving could be applied to various projects.
Yeah i like the idea of the table, im pretty sure she couldve just made a small hole and fit the table in it, because all ikea lamps come disassembled from the base. Anyway i have that lamp, and maybe ill do that, and put a wireless charger on it
@@thoselittlehands5388 , it's a great idea. Just poorly executed. And you could tell that she knew it, which made it worse. When she couldn't find the perfect shade for it, she should have just stopped at that point and saved it for another video, and looked for a better shade in the meantime. Instead they rushed it and created a sub-par project.

As much as I love the speaker idea I think you would have been better off buying the grill fabric as you could definitely tell the box muted the speaker when you put it over the speaker. Good overall idea though
For the speaker cover, a hole in the back, the top would help with the acoustics.

That’s exactly what I thought too! You could put a cute frame over it and customize it to fit with your room decor. I love it!
The metal might react with some of your metal costume jewellery though so be careful.

About the first lampshade you showed: you could've just glued the screw on thingy underneath the lampshade thingy and that would've solved the problem!

I feel like making a wood frame and then attaching rattan around each side would be an effective and cute way to make a speaker box without distorting the sound!

Part of making the journey transparent is admitting when you've failed. They didn't admit their failure, they made it the star of the video.

*PLEASE READ TO THE END FOR IMPORTANT MESSAGE*
Suggestions for when you re-do the lamp:
1. Try going for a more industrial or mid-century modern look because the lamp pole is black metal
2. Try incorporating the metal lamp shade into the design (and it fits into the industrial theme)
3. Or, use a natural fiber lampshade (such as jute material) which would fit into the mid-century modern look
4. Since the metal lampshade doesn't fit into the ikea lamp, shave down the inside circle part to make it slide around the light bulb part of the lamp
5. Use hairpin legs on the table or those slanted solid wood legs (both of which are very popular in mid-century modern looks)
IMPORTANT MESSAGE: I know this makeover video was supposed to be affordable for people to do but if you're going to re-do it in the future, focus more on executing the idea and don't sacrifice execution for affordability because the truth is, most people who watch your videos don't even do any of these diy's. Also, take this as constructive criticism because in no way, shape, or form do I want to discourage you guys from making videos. You light up my day and it really entertains me to watch you guys, but I also know you guys don't give up on something that could use some more effort and improvements 😊

Could not agree more. Quality can still be affordable. Don't loose quality for the sake of affordability because in the end when the item breaks or ur not satisfied u will have to spend even more money.
This is the right way to criticize. Other people are just sh*tting on them, you gave them and anyone who wants to try this on lots of good ideas
I think that the speaker cover could be even better if it was double sided with the aluminum sheet. Just because it would effect the sound quality even less.
For my lamp, I plan on spraying it gray instead of black, the black is just a bit to harsh so the gray will lighten it up some.
For the lamp shade, I'm going to cut down the original shade to 1/4 the size just to keep the base (that way it fits back in perfectly) and affix a bendable metal mesh top to create the missing part of the bowl.
Going to spray the bottom of the cut shade black, then use a gun metal ish color for the metal top.
Going to create a similar look for the smaller half to use up all the materials I'm going to buy. Looked up that metal sheeting you used for the speaker, found one similar and I love it!
Going to see if I can find a cute knob to cover the twisty switch to turn the lamp on. I know hobby lobby has a bunch, just gotta find one thatll fit! Maybe a cool gear, to go with the gray industrial type theme.
Still thinking of an idea to decorate the bottom of the base where the shade meets the poles. I feel like that needs some details to bring it all together and give it an expensive look.
Hope this inspires someone to diy their lamp! I got mine from Target for $7 so putting some money in for materials is still cheaper than most lamps!

for the first one, you could also use air dry clay to shape something over the existing knobs 👍🏽
Right! And make them various random sizes like the Eames one. I would have left the hook parts and vertical supports white, too, if it is for a white door.

I sadly still have THE lamp in my living room. I think the table legs look a bit awkward with the existing lamp base down there too. I like how the shade looks on it - good idea to reupurpose the bulb clip mechanism from a thrift store shade. I didn't know that cork contact paper was a thing! Neat! :D

The over the door hooks turned out supercute! But, it would've been more like the inspo if you'd stained the beads. I personally prefer it w/the lighter beads, but you were going for inspo repro so the beads needed to be stained. But, this was a really pretty makeover! Well done!
Green option for refilling handsoap (what I use in my bathroom): 1/5 liquid Dr. Bronner's in the scent of your choice to 4/5 water, shake well, refill your pump bottle as needed. Also, good to keep in a refillable spray bottle in the bathroom (and another in the kitchen): water, a little bit of Dr. Bronner's, a few drops of tea tree oil. Good for multiple cleaning uses.
*cringes* The speaker is pretty, but it wrecks the sound quality. You needed to look more into the science of speakers, sound waves, and directionality before undertaking this DIY. You just made your music sound like it's buried in the back of a cave. It looks really good, but you need to modify it to suit it's purpose properly - some strategic hole drilling on top or the open grid panels being on the sides, too.

Sloppy on the lamp. Too sloppy. Distracting. The top edge of the band on the lampshade isn't straight. There's the rough area in the notch cut into the tray. The 3 legs around the base look are a cluttered mess esp. because they aren't evenly distributed around the base. And, the whole thing is too wobbly, too unsteady. If anything, you could've solved the instability problem that comes with those lamps. This project is the big disappointment of the video. Maybe there just really is no hope for those lamps. lol

So early! But for anybody in Europe, Tiger sell a colored ball version of the fancy coat hanger. You'd just need to spray paint the balls or replace them with wooden ones like the girls.

The coloured balls is actually the original design by the designer that did the wooden one.
Some alternate suggestions to make the lamp/table more steady: since you were able to separate the main pole of the lamp, I would have just drilled a hole in the center of the table but not cut the slit. The lamp pole could be put through the hole in the table so the table would totally go around the pole. For the table legs I would have drilled from top down, through the original little feet on the tray, ( they make the tray a bit thicker there), then put screws in from top of the table down through the table & it's original little legs & into the top of the dowels being used as table legs. I would also have used wood glue where the dowels meet the original little tray legs to make it firmer. In the holes in the top of the table, where the screw heads are sunk I would have put the wood nuts you use to cover screw heads in furniture. (Not sure what they're called.) For the little side light I'd have bought a mini version of the bigger lamp shade used on the top light. Don't know if all this would work, since I'm certainly no diy-er, so these are just suggestions.😊
The lamp is my least favorite. How about not buying the lamp to begin with and go to the thrift store and buy a cute lamp for less... just a genius thought.

I have the lamp! haha I use the weird little arm as a plant light. I just added a grow bulb to it but I haven't tried to make it cuter.

How great is it that these young women can become so successful by their own creativity and hard work without being picked up by a pre-scripted TV show? We live in amazing times. I redid the air vents in my place with aluminum sheets sorta like you are using for the speaker. Really easy to do and not very expensive and it is so much better looking than the normal air vents

The lamp makeover wasn't my favorite, but it was i incredibly creative, and gave me some great inspo! I love the idea of putting a new shade on it and painting the existing shade of the little-arm-light. I have So many of these lamps; I like how they blend into the background of my home but they could definitely add a little something extra to a room with a new decorated lamp shade! The table idea was really clever, especially how she made the legs. If I were to do it I would probably use something a little sturdier or maybe try to thrift a small table? That being said, it's easy to make critiques on someone's work, but we need to rememember to give credit to the creator for the originality of their idea. I loved the diy cork coasters, so cute! Ps, The door hooks were super fab!
The struggle is real when retro-fitting lights. I’ve used weather stripping, extra large washers, electrical tape to make an ikea shade fit on a non-ikea lamp base 😂
Man i really wish the industrial lamp shade would of worked out. That would of been beautiful. Not a fan of the alternative at all :/

She didn't try to make it work,really. That would not have sent me out shopping, spending more $ & then getting a shade that wasn't nearly as cool
Also the new shade would have looked a lot better with either jute or nautical rope (above or below cork) and u could get acrylic paint and "drybrush" or do "a wash" on the white shad and have a nice distressed/farmhouse look

with the soap bottle labels you can do it even cheaper with packing tape and regular printer paper!

You could totally build that speaker cover the other way (where it's tall rather than wide) and use it to cover an Alexa or Google Home.

I have a similar lamp without the second arm and I’ve just attached a vintage scarf around the lamp shade with blue tack and I looooove that simple hack!
The "measure once, make a template once, cut once." Had me dying! 😂😂😭😭 I measure about a hundred times before cutting 😵
couldn’t you have taken a saw to the ikea lamp and made indents for the other lampshade to sit further in and so the screw top would fit over it? or am i just.....not understanding....seemed like the easiest and most obvi fix 🤧✌🏻

I feel like the knobs on the towel holder are a bit too large so the loops will probably not fit over it.
I hacked a vintage radio to make a bluetooth speaker cover a few years ago! I gutted the box (which was the hardest part), then glued it back together except the back panel which I put tiny hinges on so I could open and close it. I put a hanging lamp coiled up inside to light it up plus the speaker. Now my amazon echo controls it and it is both super cute and highly functional!

With the knowledge you have gathered over the years of DIYing, I think you could share the best types of paint to use for certain materials, when to prime or not. How to get the best finish etc. I have tried spray painting things and it's always a mess or it chips off. HALP!
