    Patagonia is legit. I believe that man was being disingenuous knowing most people wouldn't know all the good things Patagonia does.
    They've used all organic cotton since 1994. (Far ahead of the times on that.) They encourage the repair of their clothes/equipment rather than buying new -- they have a bus that travels around the US repairing not only Patagonia products, but also any other brand. They also sell used products on a separate website. Their website tells the story of where each item is made. They fully admit the impact of the nylon, polyester, and DWR coatings some of their products use, but they work to reduce it and find alternatives. (They seem to recognize the problem and want to find a solution.) Just a few examples. The list goes on and on...
    Definitely one of my favorite brands!

      Never expected so many people to see my comment. I feel obligated to add a footnote. Never had read reviews of Patagonia on Glassdoor, but I just did and I wish I hadn't.
      I won't go back on what I said -- they do the things I mentioned and those things are good. Unfortunately, it looks like they have some disappointing management and salary issues I wouldn't have expected. Maybe they do talk out of both sides of their mouth. In the scheme of things, they're doing more good/being more innovative than most other companies, so they're still tops to me for now.

      I wish Patagonia spent the money they spend on charity on bettering their own processes though. Imagine how big of a change they could make if those 100 million dollars went on creating a much better product or offering those amazing jackets to those who can't afford it. I like how they act on their mission statement and don't shrink from it but I personally feel that money donation is a lost opportunity when a company is able to create efficiencies and do more on that same pile of cash.

    I do not believe this is a PR move. Patagonia was founded and has been based on sustainability and conservation, something that entices more than just tech guys.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, no Patagonia was not "founded and has been based on sustainability and conservation". It was started in 1973 and did not to much for the environment or charity until 1986. The company was owned and run by outdoors people who generally cared about the environment, but it was not how the company was founded.
      Second, if they gave a shit about the environment more then their PR the answer is easy. Charge more to companies who aren't environmentally minded and give the extra profits to environmental causes. Not selling to tech companies only gets tech companies to buy the same type of stuff from a company that is likely less environmentally friendly and cause more harm to the environment then just selling to them to start and if companies are willing to pay more, which could be given to environmental causes, not doing this is all about not wanting your brand associated with those companies and they are putting there brands image miles in front of environmental causes.

    • @Gamingend
      @Gamingend 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Loathomar That would only work if the price increase was still under their competitor. If they can't they'll just go elsewhere. Result stays the same at the end of the day.

    • @bobjones2959
      @bobjones2959 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Loathomar If they charged these companies more they'd just go elsewhere, it'd really have a similar effect. Besides, I'm pretty sure there are price discrimination laws that stop them doing that anyway. Of course, any kind of public move like this is going to have a PR element to it, but considering the company has been fairly consistent with their branding and actually does do something for the environment outside of posturing (as some are claiming), I don't think it's fair to judge them that way in this case.

  • @vera-vf4we

      @Optical Clarity "leading producer" Hah! Them having synthetic materials in their lineup does not make them a "leading producer". Would I prefer them not to have so many poly-blends? Yeah. But given what their products are made for (outdoorsy stuff, which you need extended durability for, which can really only be achieved with plastic materials), it can only be expected. If you want to talk about "leading producers" of microplastics, look to fast-fashion.

    I believe Patagonia and The North Face are partner companies, founded by the same two men, and/or under the same umbrella. Patagonia are also deeply involved in politics and conservation in the area from which they get their namesake, in far southern South America. I think The North Face is the company that launched the founders' efforts, and that is a reference to a rather famous sheer rock climb somewhere in, I want to say, Yosemite, or something. Definitely watch 180° South for more information. It's a great documentary of a videographer's journey and his intersection with the founders of The North Face and Patagonia. It'll make ya feel real good, too. Great soundtrack to match the visuals.

    • @Peterincan
      @Peterincan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The North Face doesn't refer to a specific mountain, just the fact that the north face of a lot of mountains is colder and icier (the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland being the most famous). The logo is supposed to be Half Dome in Yosemite I think.

    Patagonia is a pretty legit company. It is even registered as a "Private Benefit Corporation."
    What this means is that the rule of "stockholders interests are primary" doesn't really exist. The Directors of a B Corporation are required to also take into account the interests of non-financial stakeholders.
    This requirement gives them legal protections and some shielding from corporate takeovers that would, as an example, use a more expensive but environmentally or socially aware, process as evidence of a lack of fiduciary responsibility as evidence.
    There are a bunch of headaches that go along with this B Corp designation. You have to have more transparency in terms of records. A C Corp really only has to answer to stock holders, a B Corp has to put everything on a public web site (with the exception of proprietary information.)
    That's a lot of hoops to jump through,, and expense, just for marketing.
