I don't get it, did they just tickle it to death? Or did they just bump into him and tire him to death?

here, it wasn't very impressive, but what usually happens is that bees will swarm the hornet, completely engulfing it within a nice bee ball. Then bees will use their wing muscles and will vibrate them to emit heat. Since hornets have a lower heat tolerance than bees, they end up cooked and die.
