@YOGACosplay foam board is about as strong as PU foam. It's soft enough to be stopped by cardboard but holds itself up without a core. EVA foam is really hard to get hold of here in the UK compared to foamboard.

I've been using foam board and found that (due to it being more rigid) I don't need a core. Have you tried using it at all?
