I saw John Carpenter's THE THING in theaters with an over half filled theater . I never heard anything bad during the movie . I thought it was way ahead of the competition in Hollywood . I thought it would be a big hit . Same thing happened watching John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China .

The Thing (1982) has always been one of, if not my absolute, favorite horror movie.

It's not just the digitized effects of 2011, it's The Thing itself: it LOVES to announce itself instead of hiding within imitation and strictly assimilating them one at a time like in John Carpenter's The Thing. Had they kept amalgamated Dynamics practical effects it would still have that problem but I guarantee it wouldn't have ½ the hate it has now.

The jokes ended up being on the critics. The Thing ending up being one of the biggest sleeper hits and cult classics movies made.

I wasn't aware of what the critics said but when I saw The Thing based on a friend's recommendation, I knew I was watching an extraordinary film.

I saw this movie when it came out in 1982, and as a young man, I thought it was brilliant then...it's only gotten better with age. It's simply one of the greatest films ever made IMHO. Well done on the video, one comment - Rob Bottin's name is pronounced Bow-TEEN.

Thanks! Yeah I realized I said his name wrong throughout the video after uploading it. Oops.
Also that's awesome you got to see it when it came out. Definitely an amazing film that just keeps getting better.

So a few days ago The Thing from 1982 turned 42 years ago and 42 years later it's still in my opinion one of the best movies ever made it's up there with The Lord of The Rings and The Godfather. Note: I have not seen the Godfather but I have heard it's a really really good film.

Thanks!!! Glad you enjoyed it! I plan on making more videos like this in the future as well as a lot more general reviews of 70s-90s horror movies.

    The critics...
Don't listen to these over educated jagoffs, listen to your gut. This movie is a masterpiece.

Ill NEVER watch the 2011 film. CGI is garbage and lazy BOOOO

    • @courageourfrights

It's ok imo, but I do think it would have greatly benefited from having practical effects instead of CGI. The real irony is that it did have that, but the studio believed that they made it look "too much like an 80s movie"...I mean wasn't that the whole point of making the movie in the first place?

    • @eclectic_gamer

it's not that CGI necessarily always looks worse, its that the movement is not as natural looking and that natural movement is so ingrained in us because we see it everyday so even if its just slightly off we instantly detect it even if we dont realise why, its built into our subconscious. It does baffle me why they didn't stick to the original plan which was clearly to use practical effects enhanced by CGI because they looked great and practical effects particularly fake rubber skin has come a long way since the 80's, its a shame we cant see both versions to compare.
