what the fuck are you on about? John Carpenter's endings are almost all great, most of them ended with ambiguity and dread, which was the intention. what the fuck did you want? happiness and riding off into the sunset? (kinda like _Blade Runner's_ crappy theatrical cut ending). Hitchcock had some weak endings, but most of the films were still great.

The last part doesn't make any sense, if childs Is the thing it can assimilate mcready without resistance, so it has no reason to hide, only an assimilated mcready should be cautious beacuse of the flamethrower

I kinda like how in the prequel the alien wasn’t as careful or secretive. It feels like it viewed the humans as a non threat, but then in the sequel/original it was a lot more careful showing that it had learned from its previous altercation (even though the original The Thing came out way before this). I don’t know it just feels like the creature had learned to be more careful around the humans.
That’s not a bad way of interpreting the thing’s behavior in 2011 vs 1985 movies.

i disagree on some of the points, the Norwegians were actually insane from the incident at their base drove them to insanity. i agree they suck at what they do and could've been more clued up... i mean why use bullets to kill the Dog-Thing knowing what it was? and the helicopter like you said/dropping a live grande.
to be fair to the Americans would you assume a monster that imitates you or would you assume they were just fucking insane or very sadistic chasing after a dog in a helicopter with guns loaded and drawn... the Norwegians fucked up not the Americans in that scene.
the reason the dog-thing revealed itself because it already infected Palmer (and maybe Norris at that point). the dogs were being aggressive and hostile toward the thing it probably felt in danger, the thing reveals itself if it has the upper hand or is in danger. the reason could be a divide and conquer plan? the dog-thing was gonna infect the dogs to make it easier to infect the others.... whenever you saw the thing mutate it wasn't thinking in logic it was thinking in survival it never transformed unless it was backed into a corner and felt it was in danger or assimilated. it never once revealed itself unless the jig was up.

original is a great 50's movie, the infamous scene of him being attacked and screaming as he is set on fire stands the test of time.
Carpenter's is a masterpiece.
2011 is not as bad as people claim, it is watchable, but only if you look at it as a fan's love letter to Carpenters, how they tried to match up the scenery and end it where his begins. I didn't like how they figured out the exact same blood thing to find out who is infected and who isn't and of course the whole CGI thing, considering the team was willing to go all out with practical effects, which is one of the main ingredients of Carpenter's
The 2011 film would be great if it was literally a TH-cam fan film. But for a big budget Hollywood product? It was as by the numbers, generic and bland as it gets.
The fact that the 2011 team had to place CGI over their practical effects is depressing, the glimpses I’ve seen of the OG practicals looked really interesting. I haven’t seen the full movie so I don’t know much about the writing quality but maybe executive demands damaged the film.
I love the color shifts for the review to reflect the 1951 cinematography to the 1982 remake & 2011 prequel. Easy to say that John Carpenter’s is the best thanks to Rob Bottin’s terrifying SFX, the acting by its cast (especially Kurt Russell and his beard) & Ennio Morricone’s minimalist score; the late composer said he wanted to simulate a heartbeat with the main themes which fits perfectly

In 2019, the original version of the novella--Frozen Hell--was released. Campbell had shortened it to clean up the pacing and make the danger feel more immediate. His estate finally found the first draft and published it 48 years after his death.
I didn't mind at all the 2011 film having a female lead, but the horrible CGI effects really ruined it. If they had stuck to practical effects and just added very little CGI, it may just have rivaled the 1982 film.

Watch 10 clover field lane. There’s a lot more purpose in that film for her than in the thing prequel.
I personally liked the thing 2011, but it could have been SO MUCH BETTER if the corperate didn't interfere. Practically the entire movie was practical and the suits stepped in and forced them to pepper cgi in, and it had some pacing issues due to them deleting some scenes that should have stayed in the movie.
Her sex isn’t the issue; it’s her age. They aren’t any doctors who’re at-the-top-of-their-field-indispensable at the age of 27, unless she’s a Doogie Hauser type.
It's not so much the female lead (like Doc Wolfula brought up, Ripley was a successful female lead decades earlier), it's the way they went about making a female lead. As Dean says, she's too young. She looks like she should still be taking notes for a senior palaeontologist. She's an american landed in the middle of a bunch of norwegians. She takes control of this group of gruff, tough older men because... reasons. It makes it look like the film has more shoehorns than a mallful of footwear stores.
It's the thing that too many Hollywood (and Hollywood-envying) films do: they want to put a woman in the lead role because of some noble intention to _show_ women in lead roles (or to stick it to the man, or whatever), but at the same time they're reluctant to go with someone with experience, gravitas, or abiliity to act (i.e. older) and just stick in a piece of eye candy.
Can we make a petition for a non cgi version of 2011 the thing?
I only saw the oldest one once or twice. But the 1982 version is my favorite “horror” movie so I’ve seen it quite a few times. The 2011 wasn’t the greatest BUT I think it was a very well done prequel!

It's criminal that this movie didn't get rave reviews when it came out in the theaters, I was only 1 year old when it did. When I later saw it on video or on TV, I was blown away with the storyline of this masterpiece. I also loved loved loved Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" as well and so "They Live" and "Big Trouble in Little China". I have almost all of Carpenter's great works in my own personal collection. That would have been freaking AWESOME if Carpenter could have directed a movie based on a Stephen King story, say like "The Mist"!! That would have been like Carpenter's "The Fog" on steroids!!

Howard Hawks loved the story but knew the technology wasn't there to create a shape-shifter, so he stuck with the Frankenstein monster approach. Hawks just showed the creature as seldom as possible, relying more on suspense and character interaction.
An interesting feature of the Hawks film is the love interest: two people who behave more like pals rather than the typical romantic couple. Their relationship gives the movie warmth and a sense of fun that is (obviously) lacking in Carpenters' version.
Thanks again for giving this often overlooked classic it's due!

Nicely done and witty. I can tell by the condition of your fangs that you’re a young canine. For those of us who loved horror before special effects and CGI, we were privy to getting the shite scared out of us by great dialog, well planned mood settings and great writing. The Thing From Another World scared me to death then and still does today.

I recently watched the 1951 version for the first time. I couldn't get over how fast and staccato the dialogue was delivered. I could see why it was adapted twice now, it was a pretty good watch. I didn't know it was from a novella. Cool trivia.

The team that did the practical effects that were replaced got so mad they made Harbinger Down with all practical effects. It is "The Thing" on a boat and it is great. You should add that film to this review since it is basically the same movie. It is on Amazon Prime if you want to give it a look.

The ‘82 one is one of my favorite movies. It never gets old for me no matter how often I see it. It also helps that I have a shit memory.
I like the 2011 one well enough. It’s nowhere near as good as the Carpenter one, but it is more of The Thing without being godawful, so I appreciate it for what it is. It’s like the Alien 3 of Thing movies. The one directed by the guy with the initials JC is by far the best one, but the follow up is a fun watch nonetheless.

I watched the original 1951 Howard Hawks version and the 1982 John Carpenter remake back to back. It was my first time watching the original and after I finished the 1982 remake, I could not decide which one was better. They're two completely different movies, but great in their own ways! The original has better pacing, great humor, and good old fashioned chills while the original has groundbreaking special effects, paranoia and hopelessness, and a literally cold open! There's good things to find in both and they're virtually uncomparable for me.
That must been a powerful electric blanket in the first one
