Greg - You and your knowledge of everything mechanical/ industrial/anything really, is amazing. I hope you can grow to what Kurtis and Karen have got going on at CEE!
The shiny part of the break. I welded a brake chamber bracket on a steer axle of a fuel tank trailer. Six months later it broke off next to the weld so clean I could of but it back in place and re welded with a perfect matching fit. Was talking with Freightliner about the uniqueness of the fracture, they said they had a tie rod end break the same way. Engineering came back with a harmonic vibration caused by disc brake. A few months later I had a brake noise in a drum brake, jack it up, rotate, it would sing. Removed inspected, re assembled, noise gone. Visited with a CHP accident investigator as to that particular style of forensic failure. He gave me the scientific name, although he has never seen it. He cite the Bay Area earthquake 30 years ago stating that the mud flats in the Bay turned into glass. The root cause was a harmonic vibration that melts material at a molecular level.
Yes it is. Since that post I was talking with a sawmill millwright, he was aware of shaft breaking with that sort of a polished surface. The cause was a harmonic noise vibration.@@Watchyn_Yarwood
nice job. thought about sitting the wheel on its side and then welding the alxe in. would of been a lot easier than trying to do all that vertical welding
Nice job! You sure do make it look easy. That looks like the side wheel that kicks out on a Wirtgen rear drum asphalt milling machine. And if it is, I can only think of one way that got damaged. The lowboy driver had it come off the trailer while loading or unloading. Those are tricky until you know the trick. I came real close once! LOL
I can tell you how that got broken….. The wheel was swiveled 90 degrees and hit the edge they were milling. The wheel could not get straight and broke the shaft.
Quite a job on the press - Good day to wear brown trousers and invest in a longer air line ! How do people manage to cause such carnage with expensive equipment ? Always amazes me how inspection / maintenance are subordinated to hitting production numbers.
Wonderful , hope you are doing well......Paul in Orlando FL....0:15...what ever you call this, I think it is 'The Final Countdown' for that Shaft.....Shaft had a bad break in show biz it seems
Your operators are a lot like Issac’s, I C Weld, they must have gone to the same school. Probably failed the course!!! Job security for you. Let them pull an anvil across a plowed field, with a log chain & they’d break it.
It broke clean adjacent to the weld! A high stress area that doesn't tolerate high stress. Weld any type of metal, and it's compromised to some degree! Maybe a key, or even splines in this type of application would have been more suitable.
Whenever I use a press and get a lot of pressure on something I call it building a bomb and just wanted to say thanks read in one of the comments you answered I bought the 3m cubitron grinding disc and man are you right best ones I’ve ever used ended up ordering a whole box
Not compromised/destroyed in disassembly! To Quote; "bearing has a slight wobble"! I s because It is designed to self-center! It has to be or the bearing will fail It is a flanged 4 Bolt type. Why are saying we Quote; "should not put them back on there"! The shaft failed! right they also sell j!
@@OFW oh okay, that makes sense. I was torching out mangled steel in this industrial dryer at a concrete plant and I got some hot metal down my neck somehow down through my sleeve into where my fore arm was and it was a real bitch to get out as I had full coveralls on etc. I still got a scar lol.
If you think those welds will last any longer than the old ones, you're dreaming. Sorry bud, you weld too cold. A guy with your limited skills should practice on flat first. Just stand it up next time. 3 passes minimum. You should practice with stick SMAW before you try MIG.
Wish you would put your camera on a stand or something, doing crap one handed wants to give a big 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 to these video. But not today, just my opinion
What a wheely good repair. I'd never get tired of watching stuff like this.
😂😂😂😂
This channel is my favorite welding channel. This is way cooler than pipelining
Greg - You and your knowledge of everything mechanical/ industrial/anything really, is amazing. I hope you can grow to what Kurtis and Karen have got going on at CEE!
Maybe. I will never be a repair in the shop only business though.
@@OFW Keep doing what you are doing. It is amazing to watch you work... figuring out the ins and outs of how to solve your jobs.

Now that is interesting. I did fleet maintenance management for 30+ years and I never saw a break like this.

That's crazy insane pressure to even bend it out of place let alone the shaft snap like that🖐 high five to you for this repair
With the schmag weld he put on there it will be coming back soon enough.
Another great repair, Good job
That wad cool as hell. Now I'm binge watching all your videos
That center came out better than I thought it would!

I like your work and show .
Good job
Can we get a little tour of your rig? 🍻🥃

Can't beat workin from home at table height. Good job Brother.
Quite a job on the press - Good day to wear brown trousers and invest in a longer air line ! How do people manage to cause such carnage with expensive equipment ? Always amazes me how inspection / maintenance are subordinated to hitting production numbers.
Maintenance does not produce revenue. Keep pushing it off until you cannot!
A spacer sleeve on each side would keep it in the middle better than welding it. I think the welding adds stress into the axle.
Because the shaft did not fit in the hole snuggly, it will work and break your weld. There is a tremendous load on that wheel.
Hey how does the awning you got there hold up in the wind?
Well the two bigger ones took off in the wind. But this one has been good.
Question
Why not heat up metal just enough to help move the plates
I think it was faster to use the press. You could use heat and a hammer though.
Bore it out for a 4" bar, turn down the ends of the bar to 3" over about 3/4" for added strength. It shouldn't break near as easily.
Wonderful , hope you are doing well......Paul in Orlando FL....0:15...what ever you call this, I think it is 'The Final Countdown' for that Shaft.....Shaft had a bad break in show biz it seems
Worn tyre bent brackets sheared shaft need new?
Was it not the weld doing something to the shaft making it brittle?
That is very possible it had an effect on it.
Great video man! Except now I have The Final Countdown stuck in my head 🤣
Nice shop! Love watching this shit! How did that break they must have run into something going fast?
I ask myself all the time how did this break. And the best answer I can come up with is magical bullshit!
Your operators are a lot like Issac’s, I C Weld, they must have gone to the same school. Probably failed the course!!!
Job security for you. Let them pull an anvil across a plowed field, with a log chain & they’d break it.
Please keep us informed on how that Vevor FGY-50150 cylinder works out. The price is right at $115 but haven't used and abuse one yet .
Nice press man simple but very effective 👌

Is your repair shop in a residential neighborhood?
No.
Love the multi-purpose tape measure. I've been known to use one as a hammer, as well.
I can't say I've ever seen something shear just like that. Usually some twists or ridges, bumps, webs or something.
Going backwards should degrease first?
The heat helps clean it

I sat on the edge of my chair while the press was bending that fork back into shape. Scary stuff. Thanks for the interesting video.
First 👍's up on fire welding thank you for sharing
Ha Ha KRG 55 ton press , we thought we were the only ones to have one ! ❤️🏴☠️🎥💯%🔧😎🇺🇸🧨💣👌👍🏻
wonderful footage of cutting and gouging the shaft off.......
WOW, that had to be a lot of weight to sheer that diameter shaft off. Nice rebuild.
I’d say that one of the machine operators got in there and had their wallet and their lunchbox in there too.
There’s always a finite limit..
Holy crap that is a huge caster wheel.
Why you torch it sideways, I like to torch vert from the top
I was wearing shorts. Trying not to get burned lol.

All of us welders have burn scars. It’s part of the job.
@@OFW 100%
You could have used your forklift forks and rolled the wheel as you welded the shaft. But you got it done. Many ways to accomplish the job.
Nothing wrong with more-or-less bench work in nice weather once in a while.
That is quite a chunk repair!
good to go, just cash the check!
Enjoyed
Holy cow!
You need one of those police shields the clear kind when you’re running the press like this ha ha
They droped. It
Pillow blocks and a bigger shaft. Concrete is abrasive!
I can't believe you'd let those welds leave your shop looking like that.
A really tough job LOL....
They didn't break that shaft by looking at it, that's for sure... I suspect it got run off a trailer ramp or something like that.
11:22 Substitute tape measure for a hammer....
Nice Earl Shieb on the wheel! lol Do you remember him?
Home of the $29.95 paint job.
Could be no preheat

Asia final count down
Your helper obviously thinks the press setup looks a little bit sketchy. Lord hates a coward.
You need a camera stand
That got dropped , or fell of a trailer. In my opinion. .

Hack job!!!
oh the final countdown project 😂
