    Mainstream metal by the decades:
    70s - foundational metal. Classic rock with more grunt.
    80s - hair/glam metal or thrash. More complex
    90s - heavier with more groove. More brutal, birth of nu metal
    2000s - big mess of shit. Mostly bands trying to be more extreme or experimental (or gangsta)
    2010s - A few lessons learned from previous decades. Broader soundscapes and influences, less focus on being as brutal as possible, sometimes you might wonder whether you’re listening to metal.

    Judas Priest is a classic band. Still making amazing music. I don't know if somone else mentioned it, but vocalist Rob Halford took things from the S&M community and created the heavy metal aesthetic in the late 70s-early 80s. They are a fantastic band. Finally Judas f***ing Priest!
    They released their first album in the early 70's, they got much more popular in the 80's and this was their first "back to the roots" album in 1990 after experimenting a bit with synthesizers and a more pop sound during the second half of the 80's. I can understand it's not the most amazing song to hear when you're not a die hard metalhead, the song isn't very nuanced, it's more all guns blazing (kinda no pun intended, for those who know) and energy cranked up to 11 from start to finish. If you want to check out one of their songs that is more like "Fade to Black", check out "Beyond the Realms of Death" from 1978, it was actually an inspiration for writing Fade to Black. It has an amazingly beautiful and musical guitar solo at roughly the half point, and then a heavier solo at the end. And yes, they are still active and touring, although only the bassist is an original member and the kind of original singer who joined just a few years after the band formed. The guitarists and the drummer are much newer members.

    • @randywissler9923
      @randywissler9923 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically your right about Ian Hill. He is the only original member, but he and Glenn Tipton are the only members to play on every album! Glenn joined in 74, right before Rocka Rolla, their debut album.

    • @Fred_P
      @Fred_P 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@randywissler9923 I wanted to be technically right. Glenn playing on every album is another matter and deserves its recognition as well, but I didn't want my comment to get too long. If you look only at the time spent in the band, Scott is the drummer with the longest stint, but he's not the original drummer. And in my opinion Les Binks was the best drummer they had. So there's a lot to say about the band, but only so much you can write in one comment.

    They started out back in 1969 and are still going strong. Rob Halford the singer is known as The Metal God and is widely imitated by metal singers.

    The song by Judas Priest you might know is Breaking the Law, it's pretty famous. The band have been going since the late 60s. The question about the aesthetics is interesting, since it was pretty much created, or at least incorporated into the heavy metal-scene, by Rob Halford (the singer). In 98 Halford came out as gay, which did put the aesthetic into a new context! Some homophobic fans found it hard to reconcile the fact that what they had come to think was cool was popularized by a gay man, but according to Halford coming out was mostly undramatic within the metal community.
    Of the classic heavy metal bands the one you haven't reacted to yet is Iron Maiden, I think Hallowed Be Thy Name is a good introduction, and the live versions are always better when it comes to Iron Maiden!

      Rob said that those outfits were his way of hiding his homosexuality in plain sight. He did it so he could go "You know me, always looking for new stage outfits" when somebody would meet him in _that_ corner of a sex shop

    It's already a year now that I am commenting (2020). Many may say that the unholy trinity of rock such as The Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple started the heavier stuff in rock and roll. Judas Priest started in 1969 and based on their progression until these days, they are very much the Godfather of Metal Rock.

    Priest went through several phases, this was their 80's thrash days. They were a big part of the New Wave of British Metal that hit the states in the late 70's early 80's. You may have heard some of their older stuff, Breaking The Law, Living After Midnight.

      Not basically, he did. He's gay, and that look was the 'in thing' in gay bars. So he brought it into heavy metal, and has enjoyed the joke of it ever since.

    Judas Priest is one of those bands that spans every generation. They started in 1969, and have adapted to every era. You can listen to a recent song, and it sounds completely different than Painkiller, and quite the opposite as well. You can go back to the 70's, to the 80's and the music is so different. They are still alive and kicking today. Rob Halford (Lead singer) is one of my personal favorite vocalists of all time, his range is incredible. You have merely dipped your toe in with this song, this band has very deep roots. I recommend exploring their music. Doesn't have to even be on camera, just sit down and listen them from their beginnings to now.

      In my opinion, that's a really, really big first step for newcomers, much as I agree on it's greatness.
      The key for recommendations for new people isn't necessarily the greatest, but the 'most accessible' great song. For IE, I'd probably choose Coming Curse, Vengeance is Mine/Violate, or Damien before DI, even though that's by far my favorite.
      An 18 minute conceptual riff-barrage is a whole lot to ask of a newcomer.

    • @akdadevil
      @akdadevil 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Neo-Midgar I understand your objection, still I think it is accessible enough for a newbie. The suggestions for new TH-cam reactors are always the same otherwise: Pantera, Metallica, Maiden, Nightwish, Slipknot/Disturbed and the odd Behemoth.

    this album and song are whats called Thrash metal. It started in the late 70's early 80's and peaked late 80's early 90's. Artists you'd be comparing this too would be the Big 4, Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Judas Priest has been around since 68 or 69 and is considered almost the rolling stones of metal, apart from Metallica and Megadeth. Songs typically are shortish (under 5min usually), very fast, lots of double drumming and bass.
    Also - Rob Halford the singer is classically opera voice trained.

    I like your reactions. Priest,has gone from old metal to almost pop metal and evolving to who they are today. I consider Priest in the category with other metal bands like Iron Maden , and others from the 70s and80s. With out them metal wouldn't be what it is today. Keep listening I like your reactions. Very smart,for lack of better words. I'll be watching. Thanks.
