Bruce Lee Interview (Pierre Berton Show, 1971)

  • Bruce Lee - founder of Jeet Kune Do - a pioneer in modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
    I got tired of watching this video, on other TH-cam channels, with the audio & video out of sync; so I audio-corrected it. I also tried a rudimentary upscale, with very little success... but, all in all, I think it's better overall.
    Much of what Bruce discusses here is expounded upon in his book, "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", which I highly recommend.

      @@BeKindToBirds , the values still exist they are now adapted into other things, merryweather adapted his boxing into the things bruce has said. This man was years ahead of his time for the mental awareness he had, if he still was alive the things he wouldve said would not have stopped here and it wouldve been even more years perfected. The fact that this man had an ideal that didnt even exist yet , later was adapted by not just mixed martial artists but boxers even now and to say these are things that dont exist today tells me you didnt pay attention in history class Or in life ever.

      @@BeKindToBirds "the values don't exist today" they never existed you fool, not during that time, and not now. What he's speaking about transcends the superficial values of the past present and maybe even the future. It's deep and when you grasp it you can truly live your life exclusive to you and be your own person unlike any other.

      I agree. There were moments within this interview were Bruce Lee was relaying a message through his philosophy and I believe there was more to be said but his train of thought was cut short by Pierre Burton. I feel if there was an openness to just listen, the interview would have been longer and more wholesome, to have Bruce shed more light to, as you said, secrets to a way of living that was truly down to earth 🌎 . In it, Quincy Jones, in an interview to Oprah Winfrey, states that he isn't done yet with producing music, and if anything, was intending to get better at it, so much so, that when his time on this earth was over, the generations that would come after us would still know that "he came through here," on the strength of the quality of work he intended to leave behind. Found this video after hearing about Tarantino defending his portrayal of Bruce Lee as arrogant in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, despite Lee's family being upset about it. After seeing this video, I would agree with Lee's family. I don't see arrogance at all. In fact Tarantino, if anything, is the arrogant one.
    What's also crazy (and some people have already commented on it) is how these two really do seem like they're from different eras. The interviewer's presentation and style is rigid and contrived, which was typical of many shows/talk shows of that era, and Bruce Lee speaks as if he's talking to someone today.
    Bruce Lee is very articulate, thoughtful, and smart. Very much ahead of his time, and died much too young.

    Everyone is so focused on the interviewer or his behavior they miss the subtle greatness of Bruce Lee. There should be an entire thread discussing things like the way he communicates with his eyes and movement of his hands, it's quite fascinating. You guys are what Bruce would call "Moon Pointers." Point to the moon and you will miss all the glory.

    • @kinghaney
      @kinghaney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree, and I understand the reference you are making, but you are a little off. See, Bruce says in Enter the Dragon (I am paraphrasing here): say you're pointing at the moon. If you focus on your finger, you will miss all of the glory, like you pointed out. However, if you focus on the moon (your tasks/others) instead of your finger (yourself), you will notice all of the glorious things life has to offer. I loved that you pointed out the "Moon Pointers" quote, and I just wanted to help you a little bit. Have a nice day, my friend.

      Minoras Moon Because TV shows have time limits down to the second so someone was waving to him to end it. No choice. Bruce knew that and understood TV and film and that's how shows work. And Pierre Berton did a fantastic job in this whole interview and prepared for it thoroughly.

Only a white guy like you mR. meyers would try to ignore or oversee that. Bruce was so intelligent, charismatic and incredibly charming - beautiful, too. To have him die so tragically and so young, it seems utterly unfair . He had so much to offer to the world. He was breaking barriers and smashing stereotypes and bringing people together and I often wonder what more he would have accomplished had he still been around today.
    I feel as though we've been cheated out of something amazing. Very, very sad.
