    Remember when about 3 years ago mark knew how to play all these awesome things? Well now he knows how to explain them. Periphery has done him well.

    Sometimes I think the only reason anyone watches guitar world is to shit on the performer in comments. I'm guessing out of jealousy? I mean, the most common thing I see leveled at Mark here is "hur durr djent is a fad! Dissonant chords sound bad!" The funny thing is that a) these guys don't even fall into the djent 'genre trappings' anymore b) they've made a successful career out of what you're complaining about, and c) you have not.

      The way I see it is every musician throughout history has always had people who hate their music, no matter what they write. Mozart all the way to Rihanna have people who hate/hated them. With that said, they also have many who like what they do.

    An important tip to remember is to utilize octaves of a particular note. In other words, this will PROLONG a certain progression, riff, or sequence while maintaining a tonal center or target pitch.

    A,G,C,F,A,D is the tuning mentioned by the way. Thickest string to thinkest. So drop C but your low note is an A instead of a C if that makes sense.

  • @tyepyesenpai4889
    @tyepyesenpai4889 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The riffs sound great both rhythmically and melodically and for anyone who says dissonance isn't musical is 100 percent wrong, tension and dissonance is something that can create a build in a song before climax or highlight heavy emotions, orrrrrrr even be placed in the middle of a riff to help it move forward. However his version of drop A is much different to mine lol. I may try his tuning

  • @ironwolg
    @ironwolg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    It would've been nice to get a bit more of an explanation of how to craft a long riff with no repetition rather than how to play a long riff with no repetition.
    This guy comes up with some pretty interesting riffs, wish we could get more insight into his thought process.

      I have been working hard to come up with new styles on a detuned 6 string. This kind of progressive writing where the tempo sticks, but the riff is ever moving, is one of the coolest things as of late. It's hard to not regress into what you know.

      Its because nobody knows what this riff ACTUALLY sounds like based off this video, figure 1 is barely half speed, people need to hear the riff in the context of music and up to speed, and even then if would probably go over a lot of peoples heads.

    The only problem I have with this, with all bias aside, is that the riff is more like a barrage of notes with not much character other than the traditionally twisted open string combinations. I don't really see any purpose behind each note. However, it helps me with understanding how to construct such musical pieces like this and Waves by Guthrie Govan.

      @Locherzero 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      At this point it's literally just pedantic trying to figure out whether it's a 'riff' or not. Seeing as metal tends to err on the side of informality, just say fuck-it and call it a riff.

      yeah i just google shit and got a little idea, a riff or ostinato is a whole idea of a song, a repeatetive progression of notes or chords throughout a musical piece, while a phrase is a whole new idea that can stand on it's own, i think a breakdown could be considered a phrase

      it`s exactly the tuning, mastodon use in pieces like for instance `march of the fire ants`. brilliant solution for a 6-string, if u do not want to play too wide fretboard with too many strings. i also use this tuning, but a whole step lower (G-c), just not to copy exactly the same unique idea, haha!

      I was actually searching through the comments just to see if/when I'd come across someone else who also felt that the guitar tone exhibited in this video was much darker sounding than his tone usual is during any of his other lesson/interviews! Especially during his guitar clinics as he elaborates about how he approached designing his signature axe, he goes on to emphasize how articulation was paramount while still dealing with a signal loaded with tons of gain! Lol the tone demo'd here certainly does not qualify !

    • @Tarkess
      @Tarkess 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Eric Chenier I think the difference is that "djent" (which is really just a term for a new wave of progressive metal bands) is far more musically respectable than a lot of the nu-metal bands were. The riffs, song structure and lyrics were often really boneheaded (for lack of a better term) in nu-metal, whereas a lot of these new progressive metal bands sound a lot more distinct and like they're actually putting a lot of effort into their songwriting. Whether you like it or not is up to you, but the musicianship in something like Periphery is far more interesting and impressive than most of the nu-metal bands.

      Not a trend bro, been around since early 2000's, and caught on in the late 2000's. 1995 if you count Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve album. It's just like how lots of bands or sounds don't catch on right away. Death Metal was considered a trend back when it started, many people didn't think it would last.

    I'm pretty sure the way to craft a long riff with no repetition is to... write a long sequence that doesn't repeat. Did this really need an explanation?

    Drop A sounds so muddy...The playing is great of course but damn...

  • @khazz01

    No matter what he plays it still sounds all mushy and repetitive. Too much gain and low tuning makes it hard to distinguish the individual notes. But he may be on to something who knows.

      I play in Drop A a lot and sometimes 8-String in EAEADGBE and it doesn't sound anywhere near as muffled and muddy as his tone does. Maybe it's just the video.

      Nothing new what he's doing. He's basically integrating a bridge pre solo into a main riff. He's playing the same repetitive riff just on different strings. His drop tuning and heavily distorted tone makes it all sound the same. But no doubt he has a record contract and it supports his lifestyle so good for him.

      +khazz01 Ever thought that it was Gutiar World who dialled in this shit tone? Have you even listened to Periphery or watched the Periphery album updates? I can you right now, every single tone used by Periphery is clear as hell, and not as fizzy high gain as this. It's tight, not loose as fuck like this.

      I can only comment on what I hear on this video. I don't listen to this band and by the way he plays I don't plan to. Nothing against them it's just not my thing. Just about everyone who watches Guitar world videos knows they sound like shit. Not to make excuses for this dude but if he's concerned over the integrity of how his music sounds he should have watched and listened to it and spared our ears of this mushy high gain tone.

    • @flagmuffin1221
      @flagmuffin1221 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      khazz01 Then why bother commenting? Surely with a small amount of rational thought you would come to the conclusion that he didn't actually have a say in uploading any of these, he did these because he wants to show people how to he does things and how to play various riffs that people like?
      Like, you could go and watch any of the hundreds of other videos out there of him, listen to any of the songs they have. But no, you'd rather assume off of this video series that you'll never go and listen to him or the band? Good one.

      Michael Scanlan Not everyone falls for this djenty "let's play random nonsense, it`s in odd meter so it`s art" fad.

    • @michaelscanlan6765
      @michaelscanlan6765 9 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      peterkray That's not what it is. It's not even djenty. These are techniques that composers throughout history have used from pretty much all genre's. It's just a complex way of building melodies. If it's a "fad' its gotta be one of the longest lasting ones in history cause it's not some new thing at all. How ignorant can you be? Just because you don't like it does not mean its random nonsense. If you even watched the video you could clearly see that its a very well thought out technique. I also find it funny that you even think this is odd meter when this riff is in 4/4.
      If you're going to hate on something then fine no one cares if you like it or not but don't proclaim your opinions like facts and then compile bullshit over it.

    This is the shittiest riff I've ever heard. "We need to carry the riff without repetition, so we will just hit random notes without construction." Also; are you kidding me with the lack of usage of metronome?

    • @CelestialFury
      @CelestialFury 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    • @berkerbugur3142

    • @berkerbugur3142
      @berkerbugur3142 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BadjokeghostRS but, he's accepted as a good musician. A musician who can't play the thing he wrote on a more moderate beat is that what you're saying? I'm sorry if you got the wrong idea, I'm not judging his understanding of music theory, I'm just saying that this should not be the way to build up a riff that is rich on melody(which is called melodic). I haven't heard the song before, I just saw the video and checked it out. As you say, each for it's own, all I was trying to say was there's just a lack of explanation on theory, that's it. And as for the salty part, I think you're reffering to the "shitty riff" part, but it is just my opinion, I'm sorry if you like the band or the guy but, as for my taste it is shitty. English is not my native language so if there's any lack of explanation or misunderstanding for sense I'm sorry, just passing on an idea :)
