Checkmate and Baja Factory Tours

This is an inside look at boat building from the Checkmate powerboat factory and how that compared to Baja. Both companies were located in Bucyrus Ohio, they both produced quality, fast boats. This video illustrates the difference in culture between "old school" craftsmanship and modern production, while both companies built some of the best boats in the industry.

i lived in bucyrus from 1987 till 1998, worked at baja boats from 1986 to 1998, worked in all phases of the small single engine assembly line, alot of great memories at baja.

Had both Checkmates and Bajas, Checkmates were the better boat but loved them both!

I grew up not far from Bucyrus. I never cared for the pinks and purples for a boat. Forever a fan of Checkmate and Baja. I happen to own a 30’ Baja.
Uh, what about Lake Erie dude?

You are correct! I presuming that you're referring to a comment I made about Bucyrus being close to water. Lake Erie is still 45 miles from Bucyrus. Growing up in Minnesota, I guess I'm a bit spoiled by so close to so many lakes. That 30' Baja is like a treasure to me. Great boat!
