    The Volkswagen Golf mk8 promises to be one of the most complete family hatchbacks you can buy. But do its new digital features add to the ownership appeal, and how does it perform compared with the likes of the Ford Focus and BMW 1 Series? In this CarGurus UK review, Dan Prosser puts a 1.5-litre petrol model to the test in order to find out.

    SET YOUR SEAT TO A MORE VERTICAL POSITION AND YOU'LL GET THE PROPER REACH OF BOTH THE STEERING WHEEL AND ALL THE OTHER CONTROLS. IT'S REALLY VERY, VERY SIMPLE.

    Nice review but just out of interest- why criticise the distance of the steering wheel from you when you could just adjust it towards you for comfort?!

    I’ve never driven a golf and this is my first. If This is the basic model and I’m very happy with it, the higher ones must be really good. The driving experience is very smooth, comfortable and gear changing is effortless. The clutch does take time getting use as they said.
    The touch screen does lag at times, but It has crispy clear screens with great built in software and UI. I’d say Have your seat more up right to reach the screen better.
    There is decent size boot space and has more storage under the floor. Seating is also good and spacious.
    Night driving is great with the ambient lighting (which can change colour settings) and having all the buttons light up is very helpful.
    The MK7-7.5 front does look better that this one, but the TSI, GTI and R MK 8 look a lot better.
    overall This is a nice car and does the basics very well 😎

  • @techyd8411
    @techyd8411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Interesting how you’re also having to stretch ever so slightly to reach that screen. That will get irksome, not might!
    Operating it, you have to engage with it just that much more than a button, I don’t think that’s a good thing and will distract people...
    Have to say, you clearly aren’t that impressed with the car overall but end by saying it’s still one of the best when it now isn’t

    Great review and presenter. Easy to follow and I appreciate the honesty. After 8 years I expected a bit more of a leap forward instead of a facelift and I agree that the front is awkward but the back looks much worse with the squared off edges.

      @@forza223bowe5 No doubt. I'm not expecting a radical design change, but with the same chassis and engines, this seems like a Golf 7.6 rather than a Mk 8. And with the Korean competition gettting much better, I'm not sure if Golf can be content sitting mid-pack.

    Interesting review but I agree - the previous Mk 7 is better looking and with the obvious cost-cutting in many areas, I think VW will struggle to maintain the sales success of previous models. The touch screen is also too far away which will contribute to distractions on the road along with the fiddly slide controls. The newer 1.5 litre petrol is not coming to Australia due to high sulphur content in fuel and price will be critical so I am wondering where the advantages of a new model are? Those basic 16" wheels look terrible.

    My son has a 2011 1.4 MK6 Golf Match and I have a 2017 GTE...the MK6 is quieter by a long way than the GTE and generally feels better put together with no squeaks or rattles (the GTE is shocking and rattle and creaks) makes you wonder how well screwed together the MK8 will be.

    As a Mk 7 Golf owner, I can't honestly say I like the new Mk8. The front/bonnet area looks too elongated and bulbous. I may need to look elsewhere when the time comes to change. Skoda perhaps? Not Seat, because of the harder/sportier ride. I prefer comfort! Having seen several recent reviews of the new Skoda Octavia, it looks a better bet than this new Golf. A better quality interior for a start.

  • @marmal320

    Good point about the seating position for tall drivers. I get that problem with a lot of cars. Have to say Mercedes and especially BMW have an excellent range of seat and steering wheel reach adjustment, as did the old 2007-14 Ford Mondeo. In all these cars you can drive with your legs stretched out and still rest your right elbow (on a RHD car). The problem would be more completely solved if manufacturers positioned brake and clutch pedals further away from the drive (i.e. further forward in the car), then we could get comfortable and reach the touchscreen controls too. Nothing worse than a high clutch pedal and a needlessly high brake pedal (Ford Kuga - guilty).

    I can't stand having everything forced on to the touchscreen - it's using technology, just for technologies sake, and surely it's got to be more dangerous, forcing you to take your eyes off the road to do anything (gesture control is NOT that great, and is most definitely not a substitute!).

    I can see where this is going first they introduce the car safety features like lane keep assist so you don’t sway and adaptive cruise control so you can’t crash. Then they add the touchscreen and people are like we can’t use them when driving we will crash and Volkswagen say no you’ve got loads of safety features and by the way here’s travel assist (In Style trim) now you can use that touchscreen without having to worry about crashing. But then comes the ninth gen Golf with full autonomy (with the choice to drive) and now you can play with your touchscreen all day long. Then one day full autonomy with no choice to drive, sit back recline have a sleep, chat play with your touchscreen turn your chair round the table comes up have lunch play scrabble or connect 4 watch a movie or play Grand Theft Auto 10 on your PlayStation 9 or chat to extended family friends or hold a business meeting while your car drives at 70mph down the motorway! No speeding at 90 no loud exhaust from a Lamborghini as it goes by, because all cars are electric, with the idea to be no more crashes ever again!

    I have a Mk7.5 and I think it's a better looking car than the Mk 8. Also I prefer physical controls to on-screen controls. The 8 loses the gas strut under the bonnet,the sliding cover over the central cup holders,the storage to the right of the steering wheel and the felt lined glove box to name but a few changes. I've always owned VWs,but I'll be seriously considering other options when I next change.

As for looks, you REALLY need the R line version and careful with wheel and color selection, ONLY some suit the car. VW do need to pay back dieselgate fines which is why some cost savings were made. • @j.shussain7528
      @j.shussain7528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ewaf88 well, glad to hear you made it!
      Power wise, it’s got a lot of pulling power in the lower range, very nippy for a 1.0 which I didn’t expect, it’s fine on Motorways, but not ideal, if you drive continuously on 70, you’ll average 45mpg easily. Town driving wise, it has got a mild hybrid system which means it’s very economical, but keep in mind, if you drive aggressively, with harsh acceleration and harsh braking you will bring down it down to about 30mpg, which for a petrol car, many may say is ok, but the 1.0 can give a lot more if driven calmly and slowly, as if you’re taking your test.
      As someone who’s had the 1.0 for 3 years now and I drive aggressively and calmly, I average about 35mpg. In my opinion, the best bet is a slightly more powerful engine. My one is 108.5 HP, 150HP is your best bet if you drive normally, like to overtake sometimes etc. Hope that helps buddy

I am not against screens but think they should be offered with command dials and that things like air-con should retain physical controls. I find it to be a sad indictment of regulators that they (rightly) prohibit mobile phone use while driving but have allowed manufacturers to turn car controls into a huge distraction.

      The i30 is an excellent car and the i30N is a brilliant hot hatch and a bit of a bargain. What amazes me is VW still get away with charging premium prices based on a perception of superior quality which is just not reflected in reality. That said German cars seem to have such huge margins built into the SRP that big discounts are normal. My nominally £40k Audi A6 was £28k new, 3 years ago. I was going to buy a Mazda 6 but went Audi as it was almost the same price. 3 years down the road I honestly wish I had bought a Mazda as Audi quality has been very average at best.

    Nope. Vw has lost me after these last models. New tech, in a car that always had questionable reliability. Especially when everything is electronics. Thats why they jeep the 3 years of warranty, even they have realized the crap they are making and do not even bother to lie to us. Exterior styling? Styling died with the golf 6 the last beautiful golf. For the same or less money there are way better alternatives, like the sister new octavia nad the mazda 3. T-cross and t-roc have hard plastics all over the inside, where usually Vw has the best quality in the market. The new facelifted tiguan has new dampers, so they slap the word "facelift" and a higher price than the old one? Sorry Vw.

      @Cjbx11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything in cars electronic these days. You may find cars that have actual buttons but it’s still all electronic as the buttons and switches only tells the microprocessor what to do. Whether a car has touch buttons, touch screens or actual controls the electronics underneath are the same.

    I don’t get why people think the car is ugly when the difference between this car and the old one isn’t that major and most people not in the know probably wouldn’t spot much difference. Personally I think it looks a little more modern which I think is something the golf needed as to me it always looked a bit old fashioned. As for the touch screens whether people like it or not it’s the way the industry is going as it allows them to simply add new features and make improvements via software updates. I have driven this car and I have no problem with the controls and don’t find them any harder or dangerous to use than on any other car although I can fully understand why a lot of people may prefer traditional controls. One other point I would also make is that people have accused VW of cost cutting on this car because of certain things that have been removed but they have totally ignored all the extras they have put on the car. For example they have been criticised for removing a plastic cap on the door handle which covered the lock yet nobody has noticed that the handles now incorporate LED lights that I suspect cost a dam sight more than a plastic cap.

    Over-styled, and you can keep the 'clever' tech - like a nagging toothache it will eventually drive you mad. The car industry has spent a century getting ergonomics right, so just because new tech allows you to do something doesn't necessarily mean you should do it, though some innovations are brilliant. Nil marks though for touch screens (more dangerous than using your mobile on the move, and that's illegal), gesture control, digital readouts for speed, revs, fuel and temp, and miniature steering wheels where you have to look over them to read the dash (Peugeot).
