    My father died of ALS in 2005 after 3 years in hospital on a respirator. It's truly one of the worst diseases I can imagine... being trapped in your own body, unable to move or communicate, feeling pain or a simple itch and unable to do anything about it.
    In the end, he couldn't even move his eyes, which was something the Neurologists said would never happen because eye neurons are connected directly to your brain, not through the spine. Eye movement was the only communication method we had, so losing that made things tough. I was 26 when I told the Dr to pull the plug on my own dad. I hope we cure this horrible disease one day, but it's so mysterious, and so different between patients, it may take a very long time.
    Thank you for this video, TED-Ed!

      Tragically, the Ice Bucket challenge that raised millions of dollars for ALS charity... the charity was fraudulent. It says on its website that only a small fraction of the proceeds go towards ALS research and helping ALS sufferers.That says a lot for society, people's concern for charity is it making them look good, not in being good.

    Almost three years ago, when I was 13, I lost my dad to ALS. He was diagnosed when I was 7, so I grew up around the disease which in my state is rare. I feel that after the ice bucket challenge lost its popularity, most people forgot about ALS or just stopped caring and spreading awareness. Seeing channels as large as this one sharing videos about it makes me so incredibly happy because it's so easy to feel alone in this situation. Thank you for creating this & spreading awareness❤️

    He volunteered himself for clinical trials at UCL and after he died some researchers invited us to look at what they were doing- one was looking at gut flora (bacteria in the bowels) and another looking into the transport proteins in cells that move organelles.

    My Great Grandmother passed away from ALS a month ago, she was suffering from it for months and it put a strain on my dad’s side of the family. She had to be moved to another nursing home to get better care and her health only deteriorated from there. She could barely move or communicate, starting hallucinating (or something like that), and needed people to take care of her constantly, it was heartbreaking and as if she was trapped in her own body.
    We were all very sad to see her go, but relieved that she isn’t suffering from ALS anymore.
    We love you and miss you Great Grandma… Rest In Peace.

    Thank you for the video. Before the only one we knew of with the condition was Mr. Hawkins, but last year we lost a family member to the disease. She only lived for less than two years after being diagnosed. I know that Cancer and AIDS are important to continue researching but when will adequate funding be given to ALS. Right now ALS is a death sentence, it is very sad!

    • @lilysthapit2222
      @lilysthapit2222 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pantoja Family Sorry for your loss. ADS is equally a death sentence along with many other diseases. If you get AIDS, you become isolated from the society and you can die anytime after HIV develop into AIDS. ALS is a very painful, taking the fact that you can't even move your muscles and nobody even knows how it occurs, just worsening the condition. I hate why humans can get so many types of diseases. It's like nature is making more different types of guns and war machines to kill humans with.

    • @pantojafamily476
      @pantojafamily476 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Lily you are very kind. It is sad, not so much for the dying part because we all know that it will happen someday. The problem with ALS is that it takes you away slowly and for those of us who stay behind and are fortunate enough to take care of our love ones, the everyday changes of the person...seeing the slow wasting away of their bodies and movement and voice until they become a skeleton also ages you slowly and kills you slowly without you ever noticing because your entire day and night is about making them comfortable, and figuring out how to make their last days the best ones possible.

    • @lilysthapit2222
      @lilysthapit2222 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pantoja Family ALS reminds me of the popular anime ' Your Lie in April' **sniff sniff** . Anyway, if I ever got ALS, I will try to make my last days memorable and then instruct someone to let me die instead of taking me to a hospital bed which will basically be a torture prison. I keep wondering how 7.6 billion people are still alive with these diseases, syndromes, viruses and whatever other war machines nature has in it's arsenal. Is it just me or sometimes I feel like doing hard work and studying is going to useless because in the end, you're probably going to get hit by one of a trillion of nature's human killing disease and what not, before being able to fulfil a dream you worked for since childhood. Kind of depressing thought.

    • @pantojafamily476
      @pantojafamily476 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I see your point Lily, but see for us life itself took a whole new meaning after facing ALS. You know people would ask us how could we do it everyday, but in it wasn't about us. You see she became paralyzed, she lost her voice, and yet her eyes were so alive. She had the most beautiful and gentle smile. She projected such peace. We learned so much from her. Lily work hard, study lots, travel, love deeply and make lots of memories. Live the best possible life you can, because if by chance something like this disease happens you might not be able to move but your mind will never be still. The people that loves you will come to your aid and motivate you to fight to the very end. Never forget that. Keep living and never fear. Have no regrets. Have peace and be in peace always.

    I'm not gonna assume that I have hypochondria since I'm never diagnosed with one but I've always feared suffering from chronic illnesses, but out of all illnesses out there in this world, I've always feared ALS the most, I just find it scary because of how ALS can just come suddenly and can get worse as time goes on, I've always feared death as well, and the fact that ALS makes most people suffering from it to only have 2 - 4 years left to live just scares the heck out of me. I know there are still a lot of deadly diseases such as cancer for example (Whatever type of cancer it is) but I'm not scared of cancer as much as I'm scared of ALS, because cancer is quite treatable if you get an early diagnosis, that's why I'm not entirely anxious about it.
    Edit: I do realize however, that as time goes on, there's always an advancements in a lot of fields, from technology, medicine, economy, politics, etc. And with that in mind, I hope someday there's a cure for ALS, after all, I also feel bad for people suffering from this disease, it's just depressing.

      You’re more likely to walk outside and get struck by lightning, or die in a horrible car crash tomorrow on your way to work, or get a cramp and drown while swimming, or die from one of the countless other horrible diseases that plague this Earth than you are to get ALS. If could go on and on about other ways you’re WAY more likely to die from than ALS. Stressing out constantly about getting an extremely rare disease is gonna cause you some real world health problems tho in the long run. Relax a little and live your life. Because to find a cure we first have to understand the cause, and it isn’t easy to rule out thousands of factors in seemingly unrelated cases, which are in itself rare and sporadic. And even if we were to find a cause, developing a general, safe, and reliable treatment is not an easy task in itself. As the video mentioned, the cell therapy is being developed and might be used as a therapeutic treatment, but we still have so much to find out about the disease, that it’s pretty clear it’ll take a long time before we develop a cure to it.

    i hate to be the cynicle one here, but the reason for why it's so hard to cure is that it's a fairly rare disease: you won't make alot of money from curing it which means no-one cares about it which in-turn means that no-one funds research on it (that was the whole point behind the ice-bucket challenge, for those who remember)

    Is there a reason the motor neurons can't be artificially replaced? If not for the whole body, then at least for the heart and lungs? I know is is possible to connect electrodes to existing nerves, though I suppose in order to completely fix the issue they would need to be connected directly to the brain.
