I'd like to mention couple of things
    - How long can you record? Watch this: th-cam.com/users/shortsKTsaGILYUCA
    - SSD is not affected by magnets, just like the storage in our phones. (HDD is affected by magnets)
    - While filming the SSD drive is not in the shot, cameras are moved on iPhone 15 Pro series compared to 14 and prior.
    - I ended up using this amzn.to/3t8aXa7 as the magnet on ssd, which is a lot stronger and thicker, but also it gives a nice space between the phone and the ssd for airflow.
    - You can transfer anything from your phone to the SSD, anything that gives you the option "save to files"
    - iPhone won't record raw photos to SSD but you can move them later on.
    - I haven't experienced any heat that may be an issue, but I haven't filmed for long periods of time.
    - The magnet sticker I used is strong enough to keep the drive on the phone, but if you like stronger, you may wanna check out the magsafe mount part of the magnet, however they're thick, so maybe the magnet from a wallet can be nice.
    - ProRes HQ are gigantic files because they're not compressed like H.265, which gives you great flexibility during edit (because almost nothing is baked into the footage)
    - I won't be saying heif in my videos. It is H.E.I.F (this one is for Apple :))

A friend and I were talking about this a few weeks ago. We also discussed picking up a small Magsafe wallet and slipping the SD drive into it. I think we are just minutes away from commercial products offering this option. Personally, I would prefer a Magsafe sleeve so I could put any small SSD in it.

    I CAN CONFIRM....
I have successfully recorded to a UHS-1 Micro SD Card (not a uhs-2) using ProRes. Here is what I have/did:
    - iPhone 15 Pro, white, 512GB
    - SanDisk Extreme Pro 512GB Micro SD card V30 ($52 bucks on Amazon)
    - UNI SD USB-C Card reader adapter ($12 bucks on Amazon)
The iPhone was set to ProRes, LOG, 4k24, main camera. (91 minutes with 512GB micro SD Card)
I formatted the card in my MacBook Pro 13" M1 to ExFAT. Popped the card in the reader, plugged the reader into the iPhone and recorded 1 full minute of video. No errors, no stopping.
    Playback was smooth.
    CONCLUSION:
NO, you do not need an SSD drive. And also, NO you do not need a faster UHS-2 SD Card. As long as you have a fast UHS-1 card, you can do it.
    NOTE:
This will not work with 4k30 or 4k60. If you set your camera to one of those, it WILL record, but your resulting file will end up being some wonky frame rate around 24p'ish. Basically, the iPhone will drop frame rate before it stops recording. So if you need to record 4k30 or 60, you will need a UHS-2 SD Card or an SSD. But 4k24p works just fine using a cheap Micro SD Card UHS-1.

“Steal it” ... it's a very cool idea, yet not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Production capabilities and execution have consistently been the driving forces. Generating ideas is a simple task; executing them, however, is not. I believe that in our mental landscape and realm of ideas, we are already far more advanced than our daily reality, and this disparity exists precisely because of these reasons.

Blackmagic camera app lets you select a location to save, so can be external drive or internal folder. It also allows you to record in full Apple log ProRes 4K 60fps INTERNALLY, so if you have enough storage on your phone, you can skip the ssd entirely. To reduce file size you can also record apple log in h.265 or h.264 as well as ProRes LT or any of the other ProRes formats and all of them can be recorded internally, and yes all in 4K 60fps. Not sure why Apple put the internal restriction on their own native app but who cares, the BM Cam app does everything we want!

Awesome Faruk! I’d love to see a MagSafe contraption for small SSD’s. Imagine how awesome it would be to film concerts with the footage going straight to the SSD.

Thank God!! I know youre not him, but youre getting pretty close! 😀 Soon as i got my new phone, the first thing i tried was ofcourse pro res log. But NO way it would work. Got a popup i should connect a external drive. But that WAS connected, the iphone didnt see it. So i tried another usb c cable, actualy 3 diffrent ones. Still didnt work. So maybe it was my SSD? So i went and bought another one....STILL didnt work. So i went to apple support (!!) No answer i could use. "Follow the instructons" but i did? "Then try another SSD" but i did?
So i put the question in the apple user forum. Got two answer's, the same as from apple 🥵 And then......YOUR video! I thank you so much. Will go and buy the stuff you recommend 😄

For me the sad reality being iPhone 15 ProRes Log to HD, only available in NTSC @ 30p. I'm in PAL location Oz, a real bummer. Enjoyed your vid, thanks 👍🎥

So the magnets won't mess with any of the internals of the phone?

I am afraid to risk it for years. Not gonna try.

No it won't. Flash Storage won't get affected by magnets. However HDD would.
