If you're going to build a bigger rig using the phone, might as well just use a mirrorless camera and open up the flexibility. While it is possible to shoot a music video with the phone, people who shoot those high production videos are not going to be shooting with a phone in real life.
I am waiting for the delivery of a new iPhone 15 plus, but in the meantime I have used my iPad Pro with a USB C hub to run both a SSD and a Rode wireless pro at the same time with the Blackmagic Camera app. Works well.
The H.265 on the BMD app is staggeringly good for it's file size. It can be pushed really hard in post and holds up just fine. Shooting in 1080P also looks great for phone viewing & simple content, and also makes it small enough to make AirDrop usable. Can definitely see the benefit of an SSD if going beyond that though.
Form factor wise thinking an interesting alternative would be something like the Samsung MUF FIT Plus 256GB flash drive. It's basically the size of a microSD card case with UHS-II SD-like speed (400MB/s) and you'd be free from needing a cable or card reader, just a small A-to USB-C adapter. Sandisk also has the Ultra Dual Drive flash with USB-C instead. Odd use case but I go to local NHL and NBA games and they're really strict about allowing any gear besides a phone (even tablets) inside so an SSD is iffy, but an iPhone 15 Pro Max with a flash drive on your keychain and suddenly boom you're shooting ProRes LOG with a 120mm lens lol. Just exciting opportunities in situations where cameras are prohibited to get mirrorless ILC quality footage and without needing to buy the most internal storage option.
I had an idea for securing an SSD to the phone using a MagSafe sticker on the SSD, but this would only work on smooth surfaced SSD’s that are large enough. Your thoughts?
why the blackmagic cam wasting that much storage for 'proxy files',it should gave people option to turn it off, since not each one using that proxy files for post editing
very Nice video. I’m going to shooting a documentary with my I phone 14 pro max with Blackmagic App Should I record in pro res ? It’s a problem for me because my I phone has only 128 GB and I can’t record in Pro res. I will work in post production on daVinci Resolve but if I will record in HEVC ( H.256 ) how many quality I will lost ? there are a lot difference ? I can do a good work if I shooting in HEVC ( H.256 ) ?
My biggest problem is variable framerate: if I choose 24fps, I want exactly that, not a variety of random non-integer framerates smooshed together playing havoc with timecodes and sync. If Apple nails this issue, then I’ll be interested.
great video. I have a question, I bought an iPhone with 256 gigabytes, in 4k 60 frames per second it requires connecting the hard drive in the standard application, if the iPhone is 512 gigabytes or 1 terabyte, there is no need to connect the hard drive?
Wondering about Bluetooth video transfer directly from port with a transmitter to receiver to drive. If anything is available on the market today then you don't have any cables
Hey! We’ve ramped up shipping and production once we finalized design and everything. If you want to DM me your order number @initialfocus on insta or X I’ll check with cliff to see when it’s set to ship!
Are you absolutely sure the h265 and prores comparison is correct in your video. I only ask because I cannot see any discernible difference in my personal tests trying to compare the h265 and prores hq even on a 75 inch tv. Others with more experience have said the same. Maybe consider a video comparing the codecs in detail for us, please. Could save alot of people a lot of storage and money for 10-20X smaller files with similar resolution and color at 10bit if it is actually the case that they are not different. Thank You for your informative videos.
Yup! The backpack shot was actually from my comparison video when ProRes first came to the iPhone. Phone video is tough to compare sometimes. Variable frame rates, variable bit rate etc etc. plenty of times clips are near impossible to notice the difference in quality. This is why so many stick to H.265. However for me, I’ve noticed there’s usually a difference in oversharpening. The new log mode helps with that in ProRes. Same with tone mapping is turned off when ProRes LOG is enabled, and the quality of detail like that backpack shot happen often is less optimal lighting conditions. So yes, there are plenty of times I’ve heard, seen and believe when it’s hard to tell the difference but if it’s a clip I care about capturing the highest detail I can, I’ll personally stick to ProRes. Hope that helps 👍🏼
@@initialfocus i agree and understand, thank you for your reply. I just wanted to mention that from what i have found is that not all ssd will work, for example my sandisk extreme pro does not work. It seems anything above usb3 gen 3 type just will not register. So the faster gen 4 drives just don’t work with 15 pro/max. Thanks again for your vids.
Is it possible to use a SSD and a external mic together in the iPhone? A hub would work? Because the type of work that I do, I want the good audio in the same file (Nowadays I still record the audio separately, but I want to make my job easier)
Nice video. I'm still on iPhone 14 Pro and will probably wait to see what the 16 line will do next year. My wish list would be a stronger version of cinematic mode in log. Heck, I'd take the current version of cinematic mode in LOG if Apple provided it. I know it's not perfect, but it's so close. I need to know they are still developing this, because if they were able to perfect this and give us log, and couple that with SSD recording; that would absolutely be a game changer IMO.
Same here. I was disappointed when finding out cinematic mode doesn't support log/prores or even 60fps footage, because of course I didn't look it up before buying it. However, video is another level anyway 😎
Although it uses up space -- the reason why I use the save in two places is because there's a backup copy in case I accidentally delete footage that I didn't intend to. Also there can be bizarre things that happen as a result of software updates, etc. E.G., I had shot some B roll footage on my iPhone 13 and when I tried to airdrop it from Protake to my Mac -- it wouldn't work. However, I was able to airdrop the backup copy from the gallery app. As well, I didn't have the time to fiddle around with things to see what was wrong because I was quite busy. Later when I did check into things I found the issue was a result of the recent iOS 17.1 update and Protake not being updated.
Why would someone want to save to twomlocations? A back up incase something goes wrong when you transfer files off the SSD. An errant delete or file corruption is rare but possible. For those paranoid about it happening... they get so,e peacef of mind. There... I've helped you out with fighting the algorithm by giving what should be the obvious answer. 👍

Not sure if you’ve figured it out yet but you would need to format to Exfat which is readable by windows and Mac. Otherwise APFS for Mac should do too.
At this point I am convinced that people are stupid. They want to be able to record/save footage to external drives but they are annoyed by the fact that they have to connect their phone to a drive with a cable. Like WTF do you want? Make up your mind! Do you want Apple to magically move gigabytes of files to your drive wirelessly at light speed?
You ruined it all with those video clips in that aberration of vertical video format...Otherwise your video is useful to watch. But that´s only my opinion as a former Broadcast TV station cameraman.
I used to shoot Tv commercials, and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Perhaps you’re behind the times. The vertical format is now one of the most popular for Ticktock. It’s also popular in TH-cam. This isn’t broadcast ?tv, it a TH-cam video with clips. Open yourself up a little. What was isn’t necessarily what is.

I've gone away from my GH5 & Sony ZV1 for the ease, simplicity, and size of a Pocket 3, I've never understood understood why someone would pick an iPhone (external HD ??? eStabilization) over a Pocket 3 (1" sensor, 10-bit color, built-in Gimbal, mStabilization) for video. My whole rig is still less $$ than a new iPhone. Maybe it's amateur... but I'm an amateur 🤣
Android users will have the "real-time transfer of video data to SSD" feature for many years? Probably not. 95% of all Android smartphones only deliver USB 2.0 speed via USB-C. Of the rest, just 2 vendors support USB 3.2 2x1 and neither of them support ProRes Raw codec or other Raw codec. 🙄

This is one of the most popular ideas for a setup. I haven’t personally tried it but in theory it should work great I imagine.
You could Velcro a bigger piece of material to the SSD and then attach the MagSafe sticker to the other side.
Any favorite ND for iPhone ?

blackmagic camera app you can lock your frame rate, shutter speed, etc
I’m new to this but are you referring to the Auto FPS setting that changes the frame rate based on light level and motion? As that can be turned off.
Save twice = sometimes saving to usb C glitches and we have loss footage, usually on sandisk devices
