  • I haven't seen a whole lot of information regarding how it feels to have a skin graft. I will admit it feels a lot different than I would have expected so I thought I would share how it feels physically. I am 11 weeks post-op phalloplasty with Dr. Chen in San Francisco CA. Thank you everyone for all the support!

    As someone who has had a skin graft covering a majoriy of my head for all of my life, its great to see people starting conversations about them. Many people don't understand and can get pretty mean.

    being a burn survivor, i definitely know what a skin graft feels like. i would just suggest massaging it and eventually the color will not be so intense. most of mine from my thighs are my skin color now

    I have large grafts on my right calf and back of my right arm from the elbow to my shoulder. The one on my arm is horrible. It burns, stings and itches constantly. I wear a compression garment and it hurts even more!
    I know how you feel. No drug or lotion helps so i take sleeping pills and check out for a while if it gets to bad. I'm in for at least a year of this. Yours looks further along than mine in healing.Any suggestions?

    Curious question Cody, I have heard that your forearm is the best place for small guys (I'm 5'1-5'2) to create a phallus, and if I'm not mistaken that's why you did it. is this true? or can you use other parts for smaller phallus's as well? I ask cause I've seen some big ones on small guys and it looks so....unnatural. Not to hate on them I am sure they are proud of it but I just want it to be very cisgender as much as possible, apologies for some when reading this if you have had this surgery and it's big (I really don't mean to hate) It's just how I feel and some of my fears of phalloplasty because I'm still trying to figure out which bottom surgery is the best for me as a person. Thanks for reading and great video! - Daniel

      Yes this is why I went with RFF. I just felt that ALT would be too big for me personally and I am really active and felt it might be a bit in the way. I know this is not the case for everyone, just my personal choice :) From what I know RFF is usually used to get a more precise size whereas other areas can be a little more unpredictable.

    I was burned at 3.5 yrs old, I ran into a free standing heater with a pot of hot water on it (the water is what burned me when it fell into my lap). They took the skin from my butt cheeks and stapled it to my lap area. I was burned from my knees to my belly button. The skin doesn't stretch after a skin graft, with time it loosens a little bit, but it is very minimal. My graft was done in 1984 and the skin also doesn't tan EVER, but it will sunburn. You also need to be careful because the skin is thinner and more susceptible to cancer. The scar will never grow hair either which as a woman is a plus... less to shave! I don't know anyone that has an autograft (skin taken from your own tissue). I did have to wear constriction stocking-shorts until I was 10years old. My parents would have to watch to see if any spots that weren't adhering and release the air bubble underneath (like popping a balloon with a needle). When I was a teenager my dad wanted me to get plastic surgery to get rid of my scars, but why? It's something that has always been a part of me since what feels like the begging. I don't have any memories of what my legs looked like before the accident so they don't bother me at all, it's just how I am. If you have any questions on what your scar is going to be like long term hit me up!

I play volleyball, and the skin would be transferred onto my arm, so I am concerned it may hurt. Does the skin that was removed from your arms have normal nerve feelings or are they particularly sensitive?

    Hey don't worry about your scar I had 3 c section it turns purple but it will be normal skin tone after it heals I thought something was wrong with mine at first but the doctor said that what happenes at first don't worry keep it clean and make sure it stays dry so no infection and scars are beautiful things it shows your body went through a journey grew up around mom with breast cancer and had scars for both surgery one on her chest and one on her head but the head happen when I was 16 so I watched the scar heal and she pass because it was growing to fast and my dad always working on something so he has scar on hand legs he probably has one on his crotch I don't know long story his mom was sick when a kid was going to bring her hot tea and he didn't make it up stairs with it it had a mind of its own and ended up on his stomach and down and people love no matter what someone looks like or scars they have and don't forget never give never surrender xoxo gothgirlpunk

    How does it feel a couple years later now? I have somewhat similar sized grafts on my leg....one graft is very comfortable and the other mostly is but not as...the worst thing is how fragile the one site is....but it has been 30 years so mobility is long long past being an issue... I got injured again on the other leg and so I am thinking about skin grafts there as much as I would rather not ...much much smaller areas but will take a loooong time to heal without grafting

    I got my whole back grafted from my thighs as a kid, Mines a bit tight on my ribs, the grafted skin loses its elasticity, also mine wont burn in the sun, i have had my shoulders blister from sunburn but the scar remains unburnt. I tattooed a quater of it a while back and if i go in the sun too long, the tattoo gets so hot it becomes unbearable, i rekon i could easily cook an egg on it, not sure what temp it gets up to, i spose i could make videos with experiments. My theory is bc the skin is so thick and strong, and the ink dark, it becomes like a green house effect, on my back. Also the tattooist told me that he had alot of trouble tattooing it and had to use extra needles or something. my burn was 12% so inc the graft sights thats 24% of my body just to start, now i could probably get to 50% with my clumsy ass.
    My advice, dont burn yourself, Mine happened as a 4 year old when i looked into the oven and leant on the oven door which toppled the whole oven, along with the boiling spaghetti water on the back burner, I have since experimented and found it only takes 20kg of weight on the door to topple an oven as it act like a lever.

  • @SuperStrik9
    @SuperStrik9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like you had a split thickness skin graft. I could tell from one of your earlier vids where your graft had a "mesh" look to it. Losing feeling to touch is very common. It's because there are no/less nerve endings. It's one of the differences between full thickness skin grafts and split thickness skin grafts. A lot of the time full thickness skin grafts aren't possible though.

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do full thickness in Europe, but in the U.S. they only do split thickness because I guess there is a higher rate of graft failure with the full. The full thickness grafts look fantastic when healed though!

    • @SuperStrik9
      @SuperStrik9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed that full thickness have the better appearance for sure. Plus the nerves are included, so a better chance of regaining full feeling. I know they also tend to do split thickness when a larger area needs to be covered. Interesting that there's a difference between Europe and America for the same procedure. I find skin grafting interesting. I'm weird like that lol.

    so i am really getting to learn more about transgender now. i starred watching videos and things to help me out on my journey. im still young, but its more of a thing ive been less afraid to admit and i'd like to ask some questions about it :0
    -do you need to get a skin graft from your arm? i've looked in places and searched some things but im not sure. i forget names because im bad with them though
    -how long will it take before taking t starts to take effect?
    -would i find a difference in body weight. such as im a bit chubby now and if i go to the gym every now and then would it be easier to gain muscle?
    im sure i could just look for these questions online but i wanted to ask you first if thats okay :)

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I am glad the videos could be of some help!
      So, there are different options to where you can get the graft from. The most common ones are from the arm or the thigh.
      Sometimes you can start seeing subtle changes on T as early as 2-3 weeks. VERY subtle. But my voice started to drop at about 8 weeks.
      You will definitely be able to build muscle easier, just as long as you stay consistent with the gym :) I think I gained about 15lbs my first year on T but it was mostly muscle :)
      Hope this helps!

    Has your doctor mentioned if the swelling will go down with time? Or does it have to do with the circulation between the vessels through your hand, moving through the scar? By the way, you're a very inspiring person. :)

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!! :) and it does take quite some time for the swelling to go down. Can be up to a year or so. The scar makes it really hard for the swelling to be drained out, but as the scar loosens up more it should be a little easier hopefully.

    Thank God for long sleeve garments! An incentive to live in cold climate if practical! Mine is on my leg so I am sometimes the only dude wearing long pants .....my wife would rather me wear pants than shorts with knee high socks in public lol .... which of course I do anyway at home .... want to protect grafts from direct sunlight...AND if they are like mine they are much morefragile than normal skin ....but long pants (and long sleeves) can both protect and hide the nastiest ...though kids always want to see it ....lol "ewww!"

    How long did it take to heal? Especially before you started working out again. Are you able to do push ups now? More like, does the skin get better and expand as if it was the original skin in that spot?

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it took about 8 weeks until I could start working out again. I can do push-ups now yes but the skin still feels tight but I think that will be forever unfortunately.

      @@Codytalks11 aw thanks unfortunate. I was debating if I should get skin graft or continue my laser removal. My tattoo is on the back of my neck and the things I typically do are really physical. 8 weeks seem a while. What would be your suggestion?

      April Montoya I would assume to prevent nerve damage, tightness and circulation issues in the leg. it's one thing to have a numb thumb, imagine a numb foot or him not being able to move his ankle or knee. this is only an assumption tho

      No matter where you take skin from, you are going to have to take from somewhere else to cover it. Even when you use your thigh to create your phallus you have to take from your other leg to cover it up.

    The doctor's should tell you everything but they never do, i think they are afraid they would talk you out of the procedure, and they want to make money.... would you have been better off just letting it heal and scar? how did it get this way? thanks for the video. I had Bleach melt my skin away under a glove and i could not feel my skin dissolving.

    Thanks for posting this. I'm scheduled to have a skin graft on my leg in a few weeks and was wondering if it was going to limit my mobility (I have to have my Achilles tendon covered, it became exposed due to a wound). I was wondering how is your mobility now months later? Has the flexibility improved with the exercises or does the area still feel tight?

    Out of curiosity, it their a reason why they did the graft so close to your hand versus just a tad higher above your wrist? More sensation?

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I asked Dr. Chen and he said it was a size issue. They can only go so close to the elbow.. something to do with the artery they take. haha I forget exactly what he said when he was explaining it but it is something along those lines...

    • @dietriche6798
      @dietriche6798 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, that makes sense. I'm an RN, so I was curious about graft location. Seems like the wrist area has so much sensation and thought maybe that had more to do with it. Thanks for the feedback. Grafts do heal up eventually, you've had a rough time, but....truly in time all will heal up! We all want it right away...just like transitioning...but it's all such a slow damn process. Good wishes to you.

    • @Codytalks11
      @Codytalks11  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was pretty painful, but it was also a really large graft and I am sure much of the difficulty depends on how big of an area the graft is covering. The hardest part was just gaining mobility back. Probably took a good month for it to start feeling like it was healing.

    My Wife had 3rd degree burns on her shoulder and upper arm. and had 5 grafts taken from her legs and put into where the wounds were. the last 6th graft was a arterial connected graft from her back to her shoulder. we are just over 1 year since the accident.
    she is able to to move and have flexibility but the grafted tissue still causes her pain and has discolouration. there are no current prescribed ointments and/or diets recommended from our doctor. I saw in the comments advice about vitamin E oil. Can you recommend (based on experience) what hope to restore original skin colouration and flexibility? Also for the donor site location to return to original skin colouration?
    P.S. we were lucky to get into a clinical trial that used stem cells in 1 of the donor site locations and that completely healed in 10 days. cannot tell it apart from regular skin now. info on the clinical trial here : clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02737748

      Just noticed you are not a burn survivor but a Phalloplasty patient. totally OK with that. I feel both burn victims and FTM community can totally share in the knowledge, there is very very little information out there for burn victims and I am very grateful to you for sharing your experience. It is close to what my wife went through and reliant useful information.
      what I learned about skin grafts is that the full grafted skin will shrink after it is transplanted. just an FYI. i didn't know about that, just sharing.
