    When eminent biologist and author Lewis Thomas was asked what message he would choose to send from Earth into outer space in the Voyager spacecraft, he answered, "I would send the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach." After a pause, he added, "But that would be boasting."

    Has anyone here ever noticed what the prelude in this magnificent piece is about? Bach turns the eight-note major scale into a tribute to the Trinity? (It is, after all, composed in 9/8 time.) Do-re-mi; mi-fa-sol; sol-la-ti; do. If you never have, listen to it again with that in mind, remembering that the Trinity is praised in almost every piece Bach wrote.

      I have always especially found the prelude to be uplifting. When I was an agnostic I thought it was celebrating the glory of Man, but when I became a Christian I understood that Bach is celebrating the glory of God. His glory is further reflected in the composer's genius which reveals the Imago Dei in us.

    This piece is in fact one of the favorites of my father who was a reasonable good organist (he died suddenly in 2003). The theme of the preludium reminds me of the dutch liturgical song 'De steppe zal bloeien' (text: Huub Oosterhuis; melody: Antoine Oomen) that is often sung during the Easter time. If this song was the last song of a mass, my father played this preludium and fugue. It is in fact a magnificent piece of music. I myself use the preludium melody as ringtone of my cell phone.

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      _Prominent_ means famous. _Emotion_ is a state of mind. This piece is not "Church Music." It has no liturgical function.

    • @peterclundstrom
      @peterclundstrom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@herrickinman9303 you're right about @giacomo zaccone's use of the word "prominent," but this is certainly a piece of "Church Music." Especially considering that the vast majority of organs are found in churches.
      Preludes and Postludes, aren't necessarily part of the Liturgy, but they're part of a church service. A priest's Homily is also not part of the liturgy, but you would still consider it a "church" thing.
      Finally, Bach wrote nearly all his music "for the glory of God," can't get much more church than that.

    Die Fuge von BWV 547 habe ich ab Takt 15, 2º Teil bis Takt 35 immer auf dem 2º Klavier gespielt (am liebsten Schwellwerk oder BW). Dás, und vor allem dass in der gesamten Fuge die 1/8 Fugenfiguren konsequent nicht legato sondern ostinato gespielt werden entwickelt gegenüber den 1/16, die legato zu spielen sind, eine enorme intrinsische Dynamik. Beide verleihen der Fuge mit der eingeführten Terrassendynamik einen enormen Schub zur Gesamtdynamik.

    I've been scouting around for Bach's earliest works written in his teens. Is this the "Prelude and Fugue in C major for organ" that he wrote in 1703, when he was 18 years old? I found two other works with the exact same name, BWV 545 and BWV 553. Is this the right one from 1703? It sounds like something Bach would've written before he really got his fugue skills going. Am I right to assume this?

Mi chiedo se a queste persone sia mai lontanamente venuto in mente di chiedersi quali disposizioni foniche e caratteristiche strutturali avessero gli strumenti specifici per i quali Bach ha concepito la sua musica, e con quanta fedeltà gli organisti di oggi si attengono ad uno studio scrupoloso di questi elementi, e delle conseguenze che esse comportano su fraseggio e scelte dei registri.

    Die Fuge von BWV 547 habe ich ab Takt 15, 2º Teil bis Takt 35 immer auf dem 2º Klavier gespielt (am liebsten Schwellwerk oder BW). Dás, und vor allem dass in der gesamten Fuge die 1/8 Fugenfiguren konsequent nicht legato sondern ostinato gespielt werden entwickelt gegenüber den 1/16, die legato zu spielen sind, eine enorme intrinsische Dynamik. Beide verleihen die Fuge mít der eigefühten Terrassendynamik einen enormen Schub zur Gesamtdynamik und Gestaltung.
