Thanks Dave for showing us your speedometer conversion job. I won't do that. I leave her (my japanese-french friend) like she is. But I changed the gear shift knob, like you did. I found a pool billard style resin ball in black with red graphics. From China, of course. A job without soldering; that's quite important for me! Have a nice one, bye --- Martin
@DAB DIY Yes, it can get very frustrating at times so I do what I can but understand my limits. I'm ambidextrous as well which has always been useful up until carpel tunnel surgery in both hands left me with nerve damage.
Sweeet Job!! Nice dial change too!! Transform the look totally!! If ya dont mind me asking, How long did you have to wait for the Speedo/Rev Counter dials to arrive to ya? Cheers!!!
Hi Dave, I've just tweeted Ryobitoolsuk as I could have sworn you were sponsored by them :-) Very fiddly job and won't be trying this mod, but looks great!
Thank you. I got the SMDs from eBay. I haven’t got a link because I did the job so long ago, but if you search for red SMDs on eBay, you’ll find thousands.
That’s me! I had this one designed to my specifications, keeping in mind that I wanted red light shining through to back light. They seem to have sold a few of these since mine, I’ve seen them in the various related Facebook groups and on their Instagram feed.
@@DABDIY thanks for the reply...and Kudos to you for doing the upgrade. I'm gonna give it some serious thought before I attempt it lol...BTW subscribed to your channel. Love the videos dude!
@@DABDIY hmmm....if I did that (scrap one) wouldn't I need to calibrate it to my car? ... Also gotta say you're videos are really entertaining and informative !
No, it doesn’t need calibrating. It would retain the mileage of the donor car, but that’s not what I was suggesting. Pick one up from a donor car and practice on it, not with the intention to install it into your car. Unless you’re enjoying my videos though, it’s always good to hear.
Honestly, I don’t know. I bought a few different types of SMD and used whichever one seems to have fitted. I kinda went for the scatter gun approach to it lol. The black dials can be found on Instagram as shown in the video.
Did you notice the hot spotting on the orange before the change. Not enough diffusing. Have those dial been digitally printed. I printed my own ones on my Saab a few years ago. Took a while to get it right. But I did eliminate the hot spotting.
The hot spotting was not there before changing to red SMDs. To be honest, the hot spotting is far more obvious on camera than in real life, it’s practically unnoticeable. I don’t know how the cards were produced, I wasn’t part of that process.
Where did you get this custom front labelsnfor speedometer? Is it possible to order it somewhere or you did it? If you can help I would be very grateful, sincerely :)
That sounds like it might be an earth problem. It’s worth taking a look at your earth points and give them a clean. Wiring diagrams are available in the Haynes manual or online.
I personally don't see the point changing the background LEDs on the cluster. The dial number maybe but definitely not the LEDs. As for me the black and red is way too much for my taste, but it's your car your rules.
My particular changes might not be to everyone’s taste, but they are to mine - black and red matches the rest of the car. Besides, this was more to show the process. Speak to the manufacturer of the dials and design your own custom ones, only your imagination is the limit!
Think I will leave mine orange. Good job, but I have not got that level of patience or a hand that is steady enough for that task.💯%

I’m glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Glad you didn't put music in this as much, find the videos better without it personally. Looks fantastic, great job.
Nice job!! Defo something i will have a look at in January!! Saved 👍
Awesome! Make sure to hit up SJ Conversions on Instagram and if you have any questions, drop me a message 👍🏻
That looks sooooo much clearer !!
I thought so too. Goes with the red and black theme of the car too.
Yeah, mine will be staying orange and only because I have nerve damage in my hands and can't hold things steady enough to do this.
I know how you feel, I’ve got nerve damage in my leg, it can be difficult to keep up with fine motor skills sometimes.
@DAB DIY Yes, it can get very frustrating at times so I do what I can but understand my limits.
I'm ambidextrous as well which has always been useful up until carpel tunnel surgery in both hands left me with nerve damage.
Good job on that. Looks great. Not sure I'd have the patience or the steady hand to do it on my Aygo ! 😂
It’s easier than it looks. A moderately steady hand and some basic tools is all you need really.
Sweeet Job!! Nice dial change too!! Transform the look totally!! If ya dont mind me asking, How long did you have to wait for the Speedo/Rev Counter dials to arrive to ya? Cheers!!!
Didn’t wait very long at all, a week or so, 10 days at the most. Speak to SJ_Customs on Instagram and see what their current turn around times are 👍🏻
Hi Dave, I've just tweeted Ryobitoolsuk as I could have sworn you were sponsored by them :-) Very fiddly job and won't be trying this mod, but looks great!
I’d love to be sponsored by them, but alas, I am not 😅
I’m glad you liked the video 😁
Bit late to the party, but did this change the colour of the backlighting for the LCD as well, or did that stay orange?
Yes, it changed that too. One of the SMDs to the right as you look at it back lights the LCD.
@@DABDIY Thanks for that, good to know... Just got to convince the mrs. that she needs the colour changed now 😂
It doesn’t take long, do it while she’s not using the car... surprise, it’s changed colour 😅
Great vid Dave, where did you get the SMD’s from , I want to change mine to Blue !
Thank you. I got the SMDs from eBay. I haven’t got a link because I did the job so long ago, but if you search for red SMDs on eBay, you’ll find thousands.
It was you that they made the other face for they made one for me about a year and a half ago
That’s me! I had this one designed to my specifications, keeping in mind that I wanted red light shining through to back light. They seem to have sold a few of these since mine, I’ve seen them in the various related Facebook groups and on their Instagram feed.
I was thinking of doing this...but after watching you do it, I didn't realise how difficult it actually is!!
It’s not that difficult. As long as you’re careful with the plastic clips and you’re ok with a soldering iron, you’ll be fine.
@@DABDIY thanks for the reply...and Kudos to you for doing the upgrade. I'm gonna give it some serious thought before I attempt it lol...BTW subscribed to your channel. Love the videos dude!
Might be worth buying a scrap one and practicing on that before you attempt the real thing.

Nice work! Wat type of led's are they? love the black plate. I want it

great video thank you for sharing . could i ask the replacement colour led are they just standard 3.2 v or are they different voltage many thanks
Just standard voltages involved with this job.
Great video and I learned a lot from that
Thanks ❤
I’m glad you found it helpful 👍🏻
Where did you get this custom front labelsnfor speedometer? Is it possible to order it somewhere or you did it? If you can help I would be very grateful, sincerely :)
If I remember correctly, it’s SJ Customs on Instagram. I might be mistaken though, it’s been a while since I had them made.
Hi, Are the dash indicator repeaters green leds or are they white with the green filter in the dash mask?
Green surface mounted diodes
@@DABDIY Thanks DABDIY indicator leds replaced and MOT passed :-)
Hi . Is there anything I can do if the dash lights won’t stay on . They flick on and off . Now they won’t come on , please help.
That sounds like it might be an earth problem. It’s worth taking a look at your earth points and give them a clean. Wiring diagrams are available in the Haynes manual or online.
@@DABDIY ok Thankyou. I will have a look. It’s my sons car it’s got mot on Monday
So u can u just put new bulb on dash or have to soldier on too
If you mean where the heater controls are, those are T5 bulbs. I have made a video about that on this channel too.
I watched that I ment the light on rev counter can I change bulbs or not
Yes, I did that in this video too
Ciao la lancetta del contachilometri a smesso di funzionare sai mica dove sia l'errore?
Not without further detail, no.
@@DABDIY ho sostituito le luci ho fatto un giro e ha funzionato, la seconda volta che l'ho provata la lancetta è rimasta ferma a 0 km/h
Perhaps the needle has come off the motor spindle?
Did they have km/hours customize dashboard?
I’m not sure about that. Drop them a message and ask, I’m sure they’d be able to accommodate your design choice.
@@DABDIYThanks, I will ask them. Very helpful video btw, I will try it one day when i have time for it.
@waxupp38 I’m sure they’ll be able to do something to help you out. Glad you liked the video too 🤙🏻
Won't be doing that😂😂😂
If you need a unbroken black shroud let me know an I'll ship it to you .
I might take you up on that!
@@DABDIY iv got it here m8 I bought a set of dials to fit the rev counter so I was left with complete set-off clocks . So it's yours if you want it .
@vlratcliffe1 do you mean the OEM dials?
I personally don't see the point changing the background LEDs on the cluster. The dial number maybe but definitely not the LEDs.

No thanks I'm happy with what I have
That’s cool man, it’s not for everyone 🤙🏻
I would have remove the ugly orange instead ;)
That’s exactly what I did, it was replaced with red. Suits the theme of the car much better than orange.
