  • Lots of chugging noise and huffin’ ‘n chuffin’ and hissing and steam whistles with this one! I was spending a few days in Cumberland, MD and caught the world’s largest operating compound-mallet steam locomotive in action. It was ready to depart for Frostburg, MD along the @westernmarylandscenicrailr1683.
This engine is now the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s #1309. Previously, it was a C&O Railroad steam engine and was hangin’ out in Baltimore awaiting a restoration. It was built in 1949, kinda late for a steam engine, and was used to pull heavy coal loads.

i'll pick the nit too: 1309 - largest operating articulated "MALLET" compound steam locomotive. 4014 - Largest operating steam locomotive period.

1309 is the world’s largest regular operating steam locomotive. 4014 is really the worlds largest steam locomotive operating but only in occasional service.

Declaring it the largest depends on the criteria for claiming "largest".
      Tractive effort.
      Weight
      Number of wheels
      And many others.
It certainly has an impressive looking smokebox front!

I believe what makes the 1309 unique is that it is a compound articulated mallet. It may not be the biggest or heaviest or strongest but its a compound using steam twice.

    • @jordanalexander615
      @jordanalexander615 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think it's the biggest mallet type still running. They do have Garret types still in service but that's another breed entirely.

the fact that big boy is operating even in a limited capacity dictates that it is the largest operating steam locomotive in country by default, there is no criteria that dictates how often it has to operate, simply that it does, that being said, as impressive as 1309 is, it is not the largest operating steam locomotive.

If challenger #3985 was still operational #1309 would be the 3rd largest operating steam locomotive in America but the challenger is out of action for the time being making this compound mallet the 2nd largest operational steam locomotive alongside UP bigboy #4014.

...... and after a year of operation she was turned into a glorified paperweight / display piece because the RR never should have bought her in the first place!! TrainOrders forums have the full scoop on real reason why she "needs repairs;" but basically it boils down to the RR not having the BOTH the space (milage) and the tonnage (for her to pull) to properly "break in." So her piston glands / seals are properly working which is leading to the current admin to declare "1309 needs new rods and pistons!! Oh and other work! Please give us more money!!!"

Big Boy is NOT a Compound Mallet, Big Boy is a Simple Articulated,
Compound Mallets have 1 set of High Pressure Pistons which use the steam first before sending it to the other pair of Pistons which are low pressure.
a Simple Articulated engine just sends steam to all 4 cylinders simultaneously, no reuse of steam.
(and if your wondering, yes it's possible to have an engine that can switch between the two styles, the N&W's Famous Y-class engines are a famous example of such a design)

1309 is not operational. To make such a claim is a falsehood. WHEN the problems are taken careof, it will run again. But to start scratching the bottom of the barrel by making claimes about the difference between regular or intermittant operation... Get off it. Big Boy is the largest. most powerful, heaviest and certainly most impressive engine going anywhere at any time. 1309 is limited in speed, BB is not. 1309 pulls ten cars or so, 1404 regularly pulls 20 more or less. 844 and 1404 both have the distinction of coming to the aid of a train pulled by multiple diesel engines. When has 1309 done this?? 1404 is waste oil fired, 1309 is still a coal burner and is fired by an automatic stoker set up - which is a good thing.
1309 is limited to a 16 mile track. 1404 runs on any rail that permits it. 1309 is NOT fitted with PTC. 1404 is. It no longer needs a diesel engine to provide such safety ,measures. 1404 is a massively powerful road engine. 1309 is not. Let's get real. As impressive as this 1309 is in size and all, it is not the top dog and it is a seasonal engine. pulling a few passenger cars over a dead ended track. MAYBE, the trackage will be expanded. Let us hope so. It would be nice to see this engine at speed once again. Render unto 1404 that which it deserves. Give 1309 credit for just being able to run. It has had a rough life and a bad start in restoration. Don't start making claims the deal with semantics.
1404 does run on class A tracks. It requires a great deal of planning and coordination to take a 2000 or 3000 mile trip. 1309 runs on a private rail system. There is no other scheduled trains carrying mixes freight or commuting passengers. It is strictly a "Scenic Railroad" not even a short line. 1309 is impressive. It is not in the best condition. Last year it operated for only a few days owing to mechanical problems. There are no announcements that this engine will operate in regular service this year. We certainly hope so. It is a beautiful piece of work. and does requires a very gentle hand on the throttle.
