Tom - a frequent question in the forums and discussions. You hit on some very important aspects that most folks don't consider when going full time. There's a huge difference between being a hobby scrapper and running a full time scrap/recycling biz. HUGE DIFFERENCE I may have missed it but there's also the increase cost of insurance and new insurance that one must have: liability and commercial vehicle at a minimum. Plus this is a very capital intensive biz: truck, trailer, tools, scale, etc. I'm two years into boot strapping Shark Scrapper LLC and pouring every penny back into the biz. This is not for the faint of heart to be sure.

Very good advice!! Been full time for almost three years...hobbyist for over 30. It is definitely a different ballgame, but with proper planning can be very lucrative, too!

I am working on going full on E-Waste recycling. I have a sales job at the moment. Got a LLC going. I am currently building my name. I started with one computer to collecting a few thousand IT pieces. Advertising on Facebook and Google. Word of mouth has been great as well. Also put up my website. I get really happy when I pickup a load of computers and such. It makes me feel great when I am out collecting. I also know my grades of things which helps alot.

I just went scrapping full time. I have a 10% compression fracture in my T12 and detereating discs between L4 and L5. You can scrap with a bad back, if you learn how to do it and know your limitations. Number one for me is building and maintaining latereal muscles, the ones up your sides. These will take the strain off your back. Most important is lifting tecnique. If you do not lift properly you cannot with a "bad" back, if you have a good back it won't be for long. Love your channel, very informative!!!

It is a very physically demanding job but that's not a problem for me. I love it. I like the tough work. It's getting paid for working out, weight lifting. I picked up and carried 170 pound electric motors today. My problem is the business and finance part. I have no idea how to get regular customers, or if I need to start an LLC, do I need insurance, how to advertise, etc. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Once I have the metal, I got it from there. I know how to separate all the metals to make as much profit as possible.

I started my business this yr, been scrapping since 2014..the hustle is the key...I've invested everything back into the business, 2 trailers, 3 employees, a ton of commercial accounts...it's rough going in the beginning but once you get rolling don't let it slow down..push push push

I find that if I do 3 different things it provides me the best security and income. I have a full time job. I have the recycling business (scapping), and I also repair if need to and sell stuff thru various outlets. When scrap prices are down I dont do as much scrapping and I concentrate more on selling. If my full time job disappears I have the scrapping and selling to supplement until I find something full time. By doing this I always have more work than I can handle and dont do the less profitable things.

Sounds like a smart gameplan you have. Being able to say "no" to certain things is GREAT.

Tough running your own business. Always something that could put you out of business almost every month. Seasonal businesses, are doubly tough. Good luck, never let up.

After twenty plus years, there is NO way is it worth becoming a full time scrapper. There are way to many other people scrapping in my area. And the scrap yards has held near the same prices for more than five years. Even though the price for something like clear sheet aluminum has gone up around my area.
