3:29 it makes sense why bug resist fighthing, since some bugs can be venomous and can cause harm in general, meaning you shouldn't FIGHT bugs
4:42 bugs in general don't mind the abstence of light, meaning they are more suitable in the dark
5:45 the logic behind this similar to ghost beating ghost, also considering that the dragon type was created before the fairy type even came to be, it makes sense why dragon would beat dragon
7:00 here is just because most depictions of fairys tend to view them as "bugs" and such
7:37 Fighthing being able to resist rock is just because of the reason you just listed, some martial artists are able to break rock, ice and even steel with sheer power, being that the reason why fighthing deals super effective to these types and why it is able to resist rock, that being because rock is the weakest and more easier ones to break compared to ice and steel
9:48 ghost resist bug because most bug moves come in form of poison, going back to the poison being resisted by ghost, you can also think of it like bugs can't cause harm to dead creatures
10:05 like said, ghost are intangible, meaning you need to have another ghost to be able to harm one another, also the fact that dark wasen't a thing before gen 2, making it more plausible why ghost would beat ghost
11:20 both ground and rock can be just interpred as "hard soil" and "soft soil", both types are a representation of the "earth" element in that matter
12:03 just like rocks can break ice, same can happend with steel or metals in general
12:29 although you do have a point in normal being more similated with animals then with humans, a human that knows how to fight or just knows wth they are doing can still beat animals in circumstances
13:46 this one is the same reason as "2 birds with one stone" argument
14:20 steel is more durable and more tough to break then rocks, meaning steel > rocks, also the argument that "there is no tool themed pokémon" is just a flat out lie, are you saying that Klefky, magnemite, tinkaton, aegislash and many others just don't exist?
15:08 most dragons are depicted as reptiles, and those animals are unable to break steel

For Flying and Fighting types, I think their type match-ups can also be seen, at least on the offensive side, as quick and precise attacks vs imprecise but heavy attacks.
This is why Flying > Bug > Fighting. With a small, agile creature like a roach or a grasshopper, slow and heavy attacks would be too telegraphed and will usually miss, while a quick strike would be enough to catch and incapacitate them. Hard materials like Rock and Steel, on the other hand, need a lot of force at once to break them, and light attacks would simply bounce off of them. Fast attacks in martial arts tend to be hard to counter and usually put you in an advantageous position if you are able to keep up momentum, which is why Flying beats Fighting. And punching a bird with a slow, heavy attack obviously wouldn't work the same way hitting them with a quick strike would, having Fighting be weak against Flying. Ice is cracked by heavy attacks, and at the scale that many defensive Ice types are on (being extra solid ice blocks) should honestly resist Flying - but Ice being dogwater defensively seems to be Game Freak's sacred treasure. Grass, Electric, and Fairy are a bit harder to explain as match-ups in this way, and could then lean into other interpretations of the types.
As for Bug being potentially interpreted as a hero-esque typing, yet not resisting Dark, this _could_ be explained by the trope of the hero being taken over by dark forces/urges being more prevalent in Eastern Sentai media. The trope does appear somewhat frequently in Western superhero media as well, but still not nearly as often; you can easily go at least half a dozen issues at a time and not bump into the trope in Western hero shows/comics, especially back in the early-mid 90s, while you'd be hard pressed trying to name a single Sentai show/comic that _doesn't_ incorporate that trope as a major arc in the story. I also think that underhanded tactics in Sentai shows/comics tend to be more effective on average than in Western hero shows/comics, but it would be kind of hard to quantize that, so that theory is more up in the air.

Dark type being weak to fairy is the only thing I’d advocate changing. Instead, it should have been ghost type that’s weak to fairy, and dark type resist fairy for balancing reasons. Psychic types go hand in hand with fairy types, indirectly eliminating dark type as a counter to psychic.

  • @kkorinko3013

Psychic is weak to dark because darkness is a common fear. All of Psychic’s weaknesses - dark, bug, ghost - are based on fears because fear overpowers the mind.

Ground resists rock/is effective against rock i think because ground is associated not just with dirt, but sand, and over time sand can wear down and eventually disintegrate rock. I know you mentioned that this is why you believe rock resisting flying doesnt make sense, however truthfully the wind will never erode a rock if the wind doesnt carry a bit of ground or sand.
I honestly think the explanation for metal tools breaking through ice is valid (and I think there are some Pokemon that are tool themed, i would point out the Klink line), but even so i think ice could also be weak to steel for the same reason it is weak to rock. Metal is harder than ice, so it would break it. I'd give this same reasoning for disagreeing with your assertion of rock being weak to steel not making sense.
I think your explanation for normal being weak to fighting NOT making sense is the exact reason that it actually is. Fighting types often have more humanoid features compared to normal types, and humans have clearly shown throughout history to be more powerful than animals through their skill, dexterity, and generally higher intelligence.
One thing to break up the disagreeing, I actually want to propose that poison resisting poison could maybe be swapped to poison instead being weak to itself, as antidotes to poison are often made using a portion of the same poison.
Steel resists dragon perhaps because knights often prevail over dragons using metal armor and swords? I suppose that may mean that steel should be effective against dragon. Perhaps metal armor is only effective at protecting knights, but the sword would still be ineffective.
Of course, these are all disagreements with your logical reasoning and not your gameplay and balancing reasoning. I dont think i disagree with anything in that regard.

Bug resists Psychic and i think it is due to insect minds being so different to other creatures, perhaps the same is true for Dark being weak? Perhaps Insects can be erratic and unpredictable, making it hard for a Dark type with a devious mind to combat them?
Also what do heroes wear in fairy tales where they slay the dragon? Steel armor. That's why they resist Dragon.
