The editing on this channel is maybe some of the best I find on all of YT these days, definitely so for the Pokémon community. Huge kudos to the editors.
One of my favorite observations I've seen about pokemon is that "Bug is not a good type definitely or offensively, but you sure don't want to have a 4x weakness to it". After all basically every team runs u-turn. It's one of those types that reminds you pokemon isn't rock paper scissors, it's a complex web of metagame factors.
Vivillon used to have access to a signature move called 'powder'. It was a status move that would trigger if the opponent used a fire-type move. Unfortunately, access to this move was taken from it, and it hasn't appeared on any other Pokémon. As a concept, it's pretty cool and I've never really seen it utilized. I'm sure it could've been interesting. Essentially, if the target afflicted with 'powder' used a fire-type move, instead of dealing damage it would blow up in the user's face, dealing damage. I can understand why they got rid of it, it was such a niche move and a signature for a completely underused mon, but still. Give my man Vivillon a W.
Thank you for putting Butterfree on here and also acknowledging that Beautifly exists, other Butterfree stuff that wasn't mentioned here is that it can learn Quiver Dance which ups Spat, Spde and Speed by one stage 'one stage is 50%' and is the ultimate Fighting type counter with acess to Psychic and being quad resistant to fighting, snd grass to
Fun fact in 2009 the Power Split Shuckle strategy mentioned in the video (but with Bronzong instead of Mimikyu) was used to win the Seattle Regional by Daniel Tapp, there's a video of the finals on YT.
I am stupidly happy to see Butterfree mentioned anywhere. My #1 favorite mon was mentioned, and it just makes me really happy. I went in sure it'd be nowhere, and yet!
I have to say i really enjoy these edits that are "imperfect" where Wolfe is definitely scripted but not all the uhhs are edited out and he just sounds more casual? Feels like old Wolfe with a little bit of polish
I completely spaced that. Was an incredible set too. That worlds finals was my introduct to vgc. Remember starting the vod and the first thing I see is Aaron Zeng going wild in the audience for his little brother while wondering who he was. Now 11 years later and I am subscribed to him and watch his videos aroumd once a week or so.
Conversational Wolfe videos are so good, but these last two typing videos have been super complemented by their incredible editing. Just an awesome one-two punch between Wolfe and the editor.
Dude I haven’t watched your content in awhile, but holy crap your editing has gotten absolutely insane. I wasn’t even that interested in this topic, just on while doing other things, but I watched the whole thing from how good the editing and commentary was
I'm not mad that you put Butterfree on here, I'm mad that you did so after MAKING CATERPIE CRY IN THE INTRO! You Monster! Also who else came in expecting Volcorona and Scolipede? Gen 5 is really where the Bug Types started getting a power bump.
Yeah gen 5 was so good for many reasons and bettering the bug typing is one of them. Just sucks that Larvesta evolves so late and the mon dies to floating pebbles
I think Emergency Exit should be tweaked to allow Golisopod to attack the attacker with whatever move was selected as it switches. It allows both sides to play smartly around it- if the golisopod is at ~60% HP, the opponent can attack into golisopod with a pokemon that resists or otherwise eats the hit from golisopod. The user of golisopod can set up good switch ins with pivot mons like amoongus or incineroar while positioning golisopod in a way that makes the exit part of emergency exit still worthwhile, and golisopod isn't shafted by an ability that hurts more than it helps because it still gets to attack even if it's being forced out at an inopportune time.
Bug types might not be the most powerful Pokémon competitively but since gen 5 and especially since gen 7 they have become one of the most fun types to use during a playthrough. Their diversity in second typing and design has made them a lot more interesting than in the first gens where there were few stand outs that were often crippled by very shallow move pools among other issues.
I like these videos it’s like giving vgc history on the side which I find interesting and the various ways people managed to come up with different strategies for a pokemon (the incredibly niche ones are my favorite to hear about)
I don't disagree at all, but as a bug type fan, I'm legally obligated to be upset by the total absences of Heracross, Scolipede, Galvantula, Crustle, Scyther, Mega Beedrill, Mega Pinsir, Yanmega, Armando, Vespiquen, Vikavolt, Ribombee, Orbeetle, Centiskorch, Lokix, and ESPECIALLY GENESECT!! WHAT THE HECK!? Now that my legally obligated Uproar has ended; Great video 😃
He never specifies but obviously he talks about doubles. If we are considering singles then yes, this debate cannot happen without mentioning Genesect first and foremost (one of the best single mons in general), Galvantula has seen a lot of play too, and Ribombee. As of now, Ribombee is in Gen 9 OU. With all the powercreep. Doing better than singles staples like Garchomp. Probably these three instead of Butterfree, Shuckle and Accelgor for singles.
@@unbound195 You seem to have missed the joke? I thought it was clear enough, sorry. I already know that Wolfe is a doubles player, and I already understand the differences that make pokemon better in one format or another. I'm a competitive player, myself. Undoubtedly a significantly more casual one, but I do play both singles and doubles.
Ribombee always had a special place in my heart since SM days. Neat typing, solid speed, decent special attack, and a solid move in Pollen Puff made for a fun pokemon to use. Only shame is the very frail defensive stats and the lack of move pool, but I still liked using it whenever I got the chance
Genesect is a mythical and has always been banned from vgc. Mega Pinsir is just not worth the mega slot and too frail. Stealth rock isn't as good in doubles so kleavor isn't as good either. They may be goated in singles but wolfe is exclusively talking about vgc in this ranking
Yessssss this was my most requested type video! Scizor has been my fav Pokémon ever so this placement was justice. Oddly enough, I don’t like bugs in real life but for some reason I absolutely LOVE bug types on Pokémon. Scizor, Masquerain, Ribombee, Pheremosa, Leavanny, Genesect, Lokix, Buzzwole to name a few. :)
Forgot about my fav Volcarona strat: Volcarona + Oricorio fire. You can Sub Oricorio to protect it, and Volcarona can use Quiver Dance or Firey Dance to set up or attack. Due to Oricorio’s Dancer ability, it will copy Volcarona’s move on top of its own move. So you can get three moves in a turn and either hyper-offensive sweep, or set up protected dual Quiver dances
Bug type is my favorite type in the series, so anytime I see bugs doing good, it makes me happy. Sadly my favorite pokemon probably won't ever be super good, but I still have hope for Scolipede
I love the editing on this one! all the +100% DMG effects at 8:45 are super satisfying, like collecting a bunch of coins in mario. your editor always does great work but that one really stood out to me. mwah!
Volcarona is my favorite pokemon of all time! The way it was introduced in the anime, the game, high level move requirements and design are simply incredible.
Bug is one of my absolute favourite types because they tend to be the best answer to a lot of annoying dark types and have some amazing designs. I know competitive is the doubles format but it’s a shame that nothing of singles is mentioned because it’s where a lot more bug types really shine. heracross for example is one of the best bug types for power special defence unique typing to hit hard and give unique resistances and can be great in a lot of ways. Guts, swarm and moxie are all useful abilities, trailblaze recently helps heracross a lot for speed, you can make him bulky or be a speedy attacker with a choice scarf it just hasn’t had doubles success sadly but singles it really does well in a lot of games. Forretress is another big pokemon in singles for its bulk, great typing, useful switching move in volt switch, useful support moves and what I love the most is it has 3 entry hazard moves to choose from allowing for a lot of single useful utility and with sturdy is a fantastic entry hazard setter. Explosion in gens 2-4 also really helped it be a solid lead choice to get rid of a big threat immediately. Ninjask is my favourite bug type and a bug who can’t work well in doubles but is a monster in singles thanks to sword dance speed boost and final gambit, three superb aspects to make it hard to switch into. It can also use u turn to phase in and out. It can also use acrobatics now or dual wingbeat for some reliable flying stab it has been missing and it most importantly is the baton pass pokemon than completely broke baton pass in gens 3 and 4 and basically changed all of competitive gen 3 and 4 because of its powerful baton pass substitute sets able to pass speed boosts and sword dances over to threatening attackers or stored power pokemon in gen 5 or it could pass into bulkier pokemon and make them unkillable and speedy and powerful. It is a game changer and deserves some discussion in a singles competitive sense. Even now it has a lot better power than it used to with better moves and can always use its super high speed to pull surprises off. Absolute goat bug type. And the final ones to mention, yanmega/scolipede for speed boost big damage in singles.
10:02 everyone is talking about the shedninja misspelling, but is no one talking about how good wolfey looks during the sponsor?? The hair, the shirt just suits wolfey so well.

After all basically every team runs u-turn. It's one of those types that reminds you pokemon isn't rock paper scissors, it's a complex web of metagame factors.
2:50 I almost spat out my juice at this cameo placement. Well done Wolfey!
I feel like Shedinja would be good on a team to just sit on the 5th and 6th slots and hardly ever get used just to force people to play around it
Shedninja*
16:25 love the little detail on the Focus Blast description
I thought I was the only one who noticed that
Good catch
The Tapu lele-Accelgor strategy and the Shuckle-Mimikyu strategy sound super fun!
Bug type made for a really interesting video.
I won't like.
I am stupidly happy to see Butterfree mentioned anywhere. My #1 favorite mon was mentioned, and it just makes me really happy. I went in sure it'd be nowhere, and yet!
I miss gigantamax Butterfree
Especially when you can make them into a pretty strong Pokemon if you know what to do.
1:02 wow he just said it's not shedninja it's shedinja.
Fun fact, tera electric shedinja with air balloon is incredibly broken, so broken that it was literally BANNED on showdown
LoL
But it wasn't Banded it ran an Air Balloon

I have to say i really enjoy these edits that are "imperfect" where Wolfe is definitely scripted but not all the uhhs are edited out and he just sounds more casual? Feels like old Wolfe with a little bit of polish
I'm so proud that Wolfe and I had the same idea to use Speed Swap Pheromosa on Calyrex-Ice.
One notable result missed for Scizor: Hayden McTavish won Senior Worlds in 2013 with Occa Berry Scizor.
Escavalier's move Fell Stinger that raises it's attack 3 stages when taking a ko is baller as hell too
But its too slow so not a good sweeper

Dude I haven’t watched your content in awhile, but holy crap your editing has gotten absolutely insane. I wasn’t even that interested in this topic, just on while doing other things, but I watched the whole thing from how good the editing and commentary was
The editing is so good! And I can't even IMAGINE how long the videos must be to actually edit, but HELL it's cool to see the results!
Volcarona is tied for my favorite Pokemon of all time with Slither Wing and the Bulbasaur line so it warms my heart that it is such a beast.
Yea half the bugs in this video were from gen 5 alone lol. They popped off with my favorite type in that generation.
The shedninja was a perfect bit to bait comment engagement lmao
I like these videos it’s like giving vgc history on the side which I find interesting and the various ways people managed to come up with different strategies for a pokemon (the incredibly niche ones are my favorite to hear about)
1:02 Editor absolutely savage
I don't disagree at all, but as a bug type fan, I'm legally obligated to be upset by the total absences of Heracross, Scolipede, Galvantula, Crustle, Scyther, Mega Beedrill, Mega Pinsir, Yanmega, Armando, Vespiquen, Vikavolt, Ribombee, Orbeetle, Centiskorch, Lokix, and ESPECIALLY GENESECT!!
WHAT THE HECK!?
Now that my legally obligated Uproar has ended;
Great video 😃
@@lunar9342 No no, I knew it was a joke, but I added what I did because you were kind of right anyway.
@@unbound195 Ah, okay. I apologize! I was under the impression that I was getting seriously critiqued for the joke 🤣
We love our buggy beasts so much that whenever we feel like it's slighted we get defensive lmao. Like a momma hen @@lunar9342
Ribombee always had a special place in my heart since SM days. Neat typing, solid speed, decent special attack, and a solid move in Pollen Puff made for a fun pokemon to use. Only shame is the very frail defensive stats and the lack of move pool, but I still liked using it whenever I got the chance
Tere electric shedinga with the air balloon would have been crazy 💀
Surprised he didn't mention Genesect, Mega-Pinsir or Kleavor. As a singles player these have been great Pokémon
Also mega beedrill
Was about to say Genesect. After gen 8 and not getting included in gen 9 I think people just forgot about it
If we're bringing up singles Galvantula had some good bits and Ribombee has an insanely strong niche in Ubers
Genesect is a mythical and has always been banned from vgc. Mega Pinsir is just not worth the mega slot and too frail. Stealth rock isn't as good in doubles so kleavor isn't as good either. They may be goated in singles but wolfe is exclusively talking about vgc in this ranking
This video is focused on doubles, and genesect has basically never even been legal in vgc
Understandable, bug type Pokémon are made cooler than their irl counterpart.
I am currently doing a Black 2 Buglocke and Leavanny saved my run on multiple occasions
Bug Types are by FAR my favorites, I really hope for Legends Z-A to give them some more love
this is my favorite series on his channel as of late, can’t wait to see the next type he chooses. I love these history-of type vids
As a kid, I used to believe that Volcarona was a legendary Pokemon in Black and White due to the way you obtained it in the sand ruins.
And the fact that larvesta took forever to evolve
@@geckohecko but Legendary Pokemons never evolved...(except Cosmog Line)
My most favorite's Venomoth with its Tinted Lens ability and Quiver Dance, Sleep Powder, Bug Buzz and Baton Pass/whatever
1 minute in and Wolfe's editor is already trolling.
Vulvarona
Volcarona is also my favorite pokemon of all time!

If moths are attracted to flames, but the moth is the flame, does that make Volcarona a narcissist?

I love all the iRO emotes being present in the video. Don't mind me as I grind away in Niffleheim on my blacksmith while I finish the video in the background.
I think covering Dragon next would be fitting, going from the historically worst type to the historically best one

I said this before, but your videos have really boosted on the editing value! It's super helpful for staying visually engaged while listening to the cool Pokemon analysis 😎
Bug type will always be the strongest type in my heart ;) . Happy my gal Araquanid made it onto the list, at least.

The bug type is my favorite type in the game so I feel so glad that you picked it for the first of this kind of videos after the 3 starting types. Great work as always Wolfey!
Heracross not even being mentioned... Grrrr, I am flabbergasted, absolutely stunned!! It didn't even receive a passing notation... bummer!
i love your editor for messing with you with the shedninja and the fact that they clearly love ragnarok online with how often they used the emotes + sound effects from it 😂
Haven't gone through all the comments but haven't seen anyone mention that focus blast description during the pheromosa segment, that was a nice touch
I only noticed because of this comment. So much is the actual stuff that when the Easter Eggs slip in, I miss half even though I'm looking for them.
Glad my boy araquanid made the list. Such an underrated mon
Also left out that water bubble makes it resist fire
I'm not sure if anyone has pointed it out yet but the fun fact at 31:31 is wrong. There wasn't another fire/bug type until SWSH (Centiskorch line) not SM.

I’m not any kind of competitive pokemon player, but when I was playing through Pokémon Moon I remember Araquanid was one of my mains that I came to really lean on in that first play through, and I think I named him Bubble. It’s honestly a great pokemon, one of my faves!!
Really great editing. I loved the icon of Toxic and Seismic Toss hitting Aegislash and falling down when talking about Shuckle.
31:30 I think it’s from gen 8 that there came more bug/fire types not gen 7. Still it’s such a great video
These are some of your most fun videos to watch. Love the more casual style to the script, feels more organic. And trying to guess what Pokemon you're going to put on the list is really fun. Please more of these, do every type! I'd be interested in Electric type next!
I used Durant with the Ability swap attack and truant. This could pair with Diglett who has arena trap and can setup in the opponents truant turn and protect in between. Diglett is able to sweep afterwards...
Volcarona evolution line was the only bug and fire type until Sword & Shield, when sizzlipede and cestiskorch arrived, and not Sun & Moon
The choice of Relic castle bgm to talk about Volcarona is just 🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌 that music gets me every time
I loved this video, thank you for covering the best type. :) I agreed with the rankings, and even guessed a fair number of them before they were revealed. Also, whoever's doing the editing deserves a raise.
