  • goo.gl/ro65FQ to access super concise & engaging GCSE videos by A* students for the new AQA, OCR and Edexcel Specs.
    1) Modern Foreign Languages:
In 2017, the number of students undertaking a GCSE in a modern foreign language experienced a slight decrease compared to 2016. It wouldn’t be surprising if this was once again the case for the new specification in 2018. In order to succeed in the new specification, students have to be able to speak relatively fluently with limited preparation as well as write essays without the aid of a dictionary. It is for this reason, that we consider languages to be one of the hardest subjects to achieve top grades in.
    2) History:
Like most essay subjects, the degree of subjectivity involved in marking exams means that it can be difficult to score the top grades. This is because two different examiners will have differing opinions of what a top band answer consists of. Therefore, even the most proficient essay writers may struggle to gain the top grades despite having the knowledge and structure to create a well argued answer.
    3) Music:
GCSE music is often omitted from lists like this, however, we believe that it is definitely deserves to be included. In order to do well in GCSE music, you must be able to play an instrument well alongside being able to learn the theoretical content too. Often, it takes years of practise before a student can play an instrument at the level required in order to achieve top grades; it is for this reason that we believe that music requires one of the highest levels of dedication out of all GCSEs.
    4) English Literature:
Unlike English Language, English Literature requires a detailed knowledge of the texts that you have studied. This can include quotes, themes and background knowledge; these can take months to learn depending on the number of different books and poems that you have to memorise in order to present well structured arguments in the exam. Once again, the marks that you gain are relatively subjective as different examiners will have different personal standards for a ‘strong argument’.
    5) Maths:
Despite the low grade boundaries last year for GCSE Maths, many students still struggled to get the top grades. This is because the questions aimed at the most able students typically require various different steps and techniques in order to achieve the answer, something which isn’t always possible to do in the limited timespan of an exam. Unlike History and English, Maths is relatively objective when it comes to marking due to the ‘right or wrong’ nature of the questions. Whilst this does help to improve standardisation, it means that if you’re one mark off the next grade a remark is unlikely to make up the difference.
    6) Sciences:
Whilst there may be slight variations in difficulty depending on which science course you do (separate sciences or combined, etc.), most people can agree that science GCSE subjects are amongst the most difficult. They require a wide variety of knowledge as well as the ability to apply to the countless scenarios you may be given in the exam. Similar to Maths, science exams come with a certain aspect of objectivity as many of the answer are either right or wrong, however with long answer questions there is some wriggle room in the mark scheme.
    7) Engineering:
At GCSE level, Engineering encompasses knowledge from both Maths and Physics in order to design practical solutions to various problems. This is one of the reasons that we think Engineering GCSE deserves a place on this list; as well as being able to apply the knowledge learnt in other subjects to a wide variety of scenarios, there is also vast amounts of new knowledge to learn about different materials and methods used in industry.

Can we talk about how hard any GCSE art and design courses are please? We have only 3 months to prep for an exam and you need to keep in mind for most of the subjects you listed here you have 2-3 years to prep, and trust me now its not just drawing it’s so much detailed analysis and to top it all off a 10 hour exam. It’s one of the hardest to achieve considering how much work your expected to have done in such a short time constraint. Its impeccably time consuming.

    • @harrisonwade3123

Grunge does stuff I 100% agree! Students that don’t take art can use all their time to complete other coursework or revise. art students have to stay on top of course work which is hard enough as well as homework on top! Plus the 10 hour exam!

Personally: Maths isn't a difficult subject for me because its very logical imo. English Literature? YES HATE IT! I'm just wondering why English Langauge isn't on it because isn't it also a difficult subject IMO? Also aren't subjects like English and History where marks are subject to controversy always difficult as it isn't always cut clear when a pupil should be awarded a certain number of marks or not. Whilst with maths, you can go oh the answer is this, the pupil got this, its right/wrong. Just my opinion.

    • @thomasdavey3033

@Charlotte Beaton YASS. Finally someone who agrees with me. Everyone at my school (even teachers) are like 'I've never met anyone who hates english as much as you.' For me maths is like, 'your answer/s are either right or wrong and this is why. Whilst with subjects like english and history (especially literature) there is no wrong or right answer but still my responses are 'not good enough'. BTW: Do you feel the same way about English Lang as you do about English Lit?

I have started my GCSE courses, and this is what I originally chose:
    -spanish
    -history
    -music
    - r/s (sc)
    - photography
After about 3 weeks into the courses, I came to a conclusion that Spanish was one of the hardest things I had ever done. GCSE spanish is on another level! Especially if you’re doing higher (which I was). From yr 7-9, Spanish was relatively easy, and I got top grades, but I never really enjoyed it. My parents advised me to take it because they wanted me to go to a top university. I used to come home and bawl my eyes out everyday that I had Spanish because I was so nervous and confused. I even got really ill because of it and the anxiety set in too. After a while I told my parents that I was not prepared to take Spanish, and that unless they wanted ,e to fail I was going to have to drop it. So after carful consideration, we picked an alternative subject. These were my updated GCSEs:
    -history
    -music
    -r/s (sc)
    -drama
    -photography
While these subjects are now leaning towards the creative side, my school adviser explained how choosing drama would not change anything for my future as I am very creative anyway. I have had drama for 2 weeks now, and so far I am loving it sooo much. I love performing and working in a team, and I also really enjoy my group. The point of this anecdote was just to say, when choosing your GCSEs, don’t make the same mistake I did and chose a subject that you think someone would want you to choose, choose ones that you enjoy. If you enjoy your subjects, your more likely to put in effort to improve, and therefore achieve higher grades. I would rather get high grades in all my GCSEs that fail one of them. Sorry about the ramble!!

Languages are easily the hardest though. If you get a grade 6 or higher in a language gcse you should consider pushing yourself for proficiency. They’re hard enough to be a good foundation for it. I just wish the speaking exam was entirely a free conversation and not based partly on a role play and picture card (really struggled with the picture card but loved the free conversation)

    There's no way I'm passing my GCSE's:
Here's a list of the ones I chose...
Art- Highest grade- B (not bad. It was a book check so not difficult)
Geography- Highest grade- A (complete fluke)
History- Highest grade- C (Hate it)
Maths- Highest grade- A (I cheated) highest grade I didn't cheat to get was a D
English language- Highest grade- A (I'm not bad at English)
English Lit- Highest grade- A (K stfu Scrooge and Hamlet)
Computer Science- Highest grade- A* (K I'm actually legendary at this subject and have straight a's weird flex)
RS full- Highest grade- B (sure whatever. I hate it and I always cheat.
I don't do languages or sciences because I'm messed up and mentally wrong so the school said since I don't have any need for them that I can drop them if I want so I did. Yes it's less GCSE's but I don't want a science job or anything with French. I want to do music. I wanted to choose it for GCSE but I have bad social anxiety so I literally can't talk to people without having a breakdown and they said if I wanted to do it I had to audition in front of 2 teachers in a room and that just sounded horrible so hell no. Ok bye. Sorry for ranting. Just needed to put that out there thanks.

u r expected to fully focus in school, complete all homework assignments AND do revision for all of them- and still have time to sleep, eat, and have a social life
each subject is filled with content, and it is hard not to get overwhelmed with it all

Okay for a start, i can see loads of whiny comments about music. A bit of common sense: dont pick music if you can't even play an instrument/sing well. It won't benefit you. Also, when i say this, i mean you should also be able to compose for your instrument. It's really not that fucking hard

    • @miaconway4003
      @miaconway4003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

ayesha davis I mean it is hard. you’ve got to do two performances pieces, solo and ensemble which have to be note accurate to a score and fit many criteria’s. you have to compose two full songs that fit certain criteria’s and the first composition has no stimulus or aid it is simply creativity. You also have to learn about 8 topics of theory and learn specific subject content and terminology and be able to apply it when listening to pieces of music in an exam.

GCSE music isn't hard, everyone who takes it can either sing or already play an instrument, I got an A and I know nothing about music theory. The only reason it would be difficult would be if you were dumb enough to take it without playing an instrument/being able to sing.

  • @gamma_dablam
    @gamma_dablam 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My opinion
    1. Maths/Further Maths (top end questions are quite analytical)
    2. MFL (so much vocab and hard grammar)
    3. History/Geography (history slightly harder because there’s much more content, but the exams are generally a pain in the ass)
    4. Seperate Sciences
    5. Computer Science (there’s just so much damn theory and the practical material requires a certain back for programming)
My subjects were: (if no brackets it was igcse A*-G)
    Maths (igcse 9-1)
    Further Maths (igcse A^-C)
    Physics
    Biology
    Chemistry
    French (gcse 9-1)
    Geography (gcse 9-1)
    Business Studies
    English Language (igcse 9-1)
    English Literature
I also took computer science and found it exceptionally challenging. Where I was achieving As and Bs at least in other subjects, I was struggling to even pass in computer science. The problem solving and programming paper was short for the time given but still a significant challenge while the theory paper was especially difficult to handle.
Maths band 9 questions are ridiculously analytical. One of the question on our exam was ‘The sum of the first 48 terms of a series is 4 times the sum of the first 36 terms of the same series. Find the sum of the first 30 terms’. The lower band questions on higher are often multiple step and can require some mathematical aptitude. It is quite a challenge. Further Maths has the same issue but more focused on the top difficulty spectrum
My science igcses we’re pretty similar to the new 9-1 gcse sciences (just more topic depth rather than breadth of topics). They weren’t that bad.
English language exam is nasty. It’s difficult as hell to finish. English Literature the same but less acute. Both are quite difficult. The 9-1 English Literature gcse is horrible though. Learning quotes isn’t the point of literature. Literature is about textual and contextual appreciation. Which the new 9-1 spec does not provide.
French gcse 9-1 writing exam was pretty straightforward for me. Reading was okay as was speaking (though I’d been on an exchange which massively helped my confidence with the language) but Listening was tough. The vocab range was a struggle, and the top grade grammar structures are difficult to learn (especially subjunctive).
Business Studies was very easy for me, though people do find it hard for various reasons. Exam technique was a notable difficulty for me but easily overcome. Content was relatively easy to learn and there wasn’t that much of it though again I saw people greatly struggle with it.

Religious studies (it's a "religious school" let's be real NO ONE WAS RELIGIOUS)
And history or geography (you can't do 2 languages or ditch RS and your other Humanities subject)
I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE DONE SPANISH BUT NOO (I didn't get signed up for it instead I did French (which I can already fluent speak in)) but at least a didn't have to revise for it and got a 9 🤷🏿‍♀️ would have maybe preferred to do 2 languages or 3 opinions eg: food, textiles and business or French, Spanish, Food and textiles

Music isn’t too difficult in my opinion, the people in my school who take dance seem to be more stressed than people in my class, but maybe that’s because myself and the people in my class enjoy listening to and playing music a lot. I find dt and business a lot more stressful and time consuming there’s too much coursework.

My family and teachers told me to join gcse art as i’ve won many competitions and am pretty good at painting. I joined gcse art thinking that it would be an easy walk in the park and boy i was WRONG. I had to make over 16 paintings in a week, take a whole lotta photos, find artist references, search for their history, and at the same time study for other subjects too. On top of all that, the final exam is ONLY 10 HOURS. I had to paint an a2 piece in the course of 10 hours which is practically quite impossible. If i hear one more person say that gcse art is just an easy walk in the park, they boutta catch these ass whoopins from me😤

Only some schools teach it and it so happens my school teaches it. The reason why I think it's hard but not impossible is because I take the new GCSE 9-1 course which was the old A level. They brought down the A level to GCSE. Economics GCSE used to be more like business studies but now it is much harder and you actually have to have an established understanding it's not like a maths test that you can just 'wing it'.

The CIE Economics board consists of two papers. The first being multiple choice and the second being a data response. The content is quite hard however the paper is said to be still hard but easier than the content if you get what I'm trying to say.

  • @LukaChesterton

If you think about it, MFL's are the EASIEST subjects. You spend your whole life in education studying subjects like science and maths up to your GCSE exams, but a language can be learned to a good proficiency in a year if it is studied everyday for one hour. :)

@@irisburke2989 imo you might as well not drop it, it's better to do the exam anyway at the end so you at least have a possibility of passing/doing well, and if you get a rubbish mark and fail then it doesn't matter because you're no worse off than if you had dropped it 🤷‍♀️
