  • Unfortunately this is one series that has never seen its way to dvd. Only VHS NTSC.
1993 TV series by Dick Warner. No copyright infringement intended.
From Ballinasloe to Drumshanbo part 1: "Forgotten Locks"
In our initial outing, we discover Clonmacnoise, perhaps Ireland's finest ruins. Here a monastery founded in 545 grew through centuries of medieval turmoil. First burned by Vikings in 844, it was coveted by both the Irish and Danes for its artistic and material wealth, and battled over for centuries. Today, the stunning waterside vista is home of the grave of Rory O'Conor, last High King of Ireland.

Many years ago (I'm now 80) I recall that the canal to Ballinasloe was being restored. It can hardly have been abandoned. I did enjoy working on Irish inland waterways.

I wrote to Practical Boat Owner and asked why no mention of Irelands finest Waterways Broadcaster Writer they wrote back to say they were not aware of Dick or his Broadcast Career.
I sent them details hopefully they will add it to their news.
Some of the routes he championed are now being brought back to life !!
RIP Dick your programs live on...
I believe some episodes are lost I hope Eire Media will keep it safe..

Thanks so much for uploading this. I remember my primary school teacher in 4th class, recording this from the TV and bringing it in to show us the next day. That was the 90s. Actually Dick Warner came in for a chat and Q&A with our class. He happens to come from a few miles from where I'm from in Kildare. I had to opportunity to meet him a few times as an adult before his sad passing. A gentleman and these shows really inspired a lot of my outdoor interests. So happy to see this again.

A superb series i watched it when it first televised in the UK.
He is up with Attenborough as others have said you travel with him he knows his rivers wildlife and history..
He puts across the pressures on countryside and music as good as Clanad...

Thanks, Glad you like it. Saw this series back in the early nineties on Discovery Channel. Enjoyed it immensely and started hiring narrow boats in Ireland and England as a consequence, which almost turned into an addiction. The boating, the peace, the sense of being away from it all, the sense of history, the handling of locks and bridges...
Was published on VHS NTSC Video in the USA, not on Pal. Recently ordered a (already rare) set of tapes via Amazon and converted them for all to enjoy...

Hey! This guy made a great journey from Dublin to the Shanon River through the Royal Channel with an old channel boat and record it in the serie called "Waterways - The Royal Canal". Rest in peace, dude. (Dick Warner died on June 16, 2017)

I came across episodes 1-5 of series 1 (the 1992 series) on a tape and I'm now trying to track down the missing episode but it doesn't seem to have ever been released.
