1. Go on a walk 2. Come back with no expectations 3. Make shitty art an and be okay with it 4. Do something new (not what you usually draw) 5. Do studies (films, photos, reality etc.) 6. Try a new medium 7. Get inspired and involved with community 8. The Artists’s way; morning pages, artist dates
Sometimes it's art block/creative block. Sometimes it's depression. It's okay to make things without feeling the spark and excitement and joy, and that's something I need to remind myself a lot.
I feel like I've struggled with Art Block for... a long time. It's only been recently that I've realized it's just a lack in fundamentals. I wasn't doing enough studies. I was too focused on being perfect and every drawing has to be amazing. I've listened to a variety of artists tell their story and give insight into what can help get out of Art Block. The thing that has honestly helped me is understanding that it's okay to let go, its okay to make mistakes and that not every page of your sketch book is going to be perfect. The other thing that has helped me is drawing everyday or as often as i feel comfortable with. I listened to one artist "JelArts" talk about how if you go long periods without drawing it becomes more difficult to go back to your sketchbook and i felt this with every fiber of my being lmao I have struggled for years even going to college for animation. Im really excited you made this video I feel like more artists need to make more Art Block videos and reasons artists could be feeling the struggle.
I’ve been struggling with some of the worst art block of my creative history and this video found me at the perfect time in trying to combat it. Thanks for making this! 🧡
Made me realize you'd be great on the Creative Block podcast I've been listening too, but also each episode has the guest talk about how they deal with it so it could help give more perspectives to others too
Thank you so much for this video, this has been extremely helpful! You have such a concise and clear way of explaining things. I definitely feel prepared to tackle my art block now!
I am literally having art block for the first time in my entire life and my favourite artist posted this at just the right time??? Fbi kinda crazy (i am not American)
Can I share something for yall? I have been on a constant creative high most of the year. I seriously have improved more this year that i have since started in mid 2021. What did I do? I kept exploring new ideas, compositions, values, and perspective. I also just let loose and drew whatever my mind thought was fun. And it’s been working out for me. Idk, a bit random but thought id also share what has helped me continue.
You're right, it's just hard take that first step out of the block. At least that was with my long creative block. I had this fear that in order to get a job (specially first one) I need to be some sort of art guru, study every tutorial, make my portfolio look perfect etc.
I'm saving this video for later, like everyone else said this video couldn't have come at a better time. Here's to hoping I can finally complete a piece 🎉
I hate art block. This past year i had a lot of traumatic things happen to me, and It felt like I just forgot everything. Even when i made something good i still nitpick and say that it's just trash. I just learnt to not push myself and accept the level I'm at now. Everyone is in such a rush to make it big, and I'm not one to talk, I'd love to have all the skills to do what i love and make money but it's just not important. I just draw when i want to now instead of the whole grind set, draw everyday crap. If art isn't fu. Then why bother?
Yeha I got done with my work in history and I had like 20 minutes left and a blank folder in front of me I knew I wanted to draw but I just had nothing so I just sat there staring and thinking of what to draw(not a great example of art block but still🫤)
