    These tactics are implied in Paris as well Dacob. I spoke to several people, who had to deal with such SA’s. One of the ladies had to buy & preorder things she didn’t particularly want, but SA told her that if she bought it “she will definitely sell her a bag she wants” after paying she went back to SA & of sudden SA told her “I’m sorry I’m not leather SA, for a bag you have to ask someone else”. In the end this lady returned to that boutique & spoke to the store manager complaining, manager apologised & she was able to cancel her preorder. Some SA’s are really shameless

      Exactly. These bags should be nice objects that make us happy if we like them and they should not be so riddled with strange secret spending rules and social norms of showing off wealth and status… all that kills off all the fun really for me.

  • @SuysRomy

    At the end of the video you explained the journey/game to perfection!
    You were spot on, stop pushing the SA’s.
    I always buy at Hermès Monaco, they have extremely demanding clients who want the more exclusive bags and lots of them.
    So my strategy is that I buy regularly with Hermès because I like the brand but I only ask once a year for a Birkin or Kelly which is very much appreciated by my SA so she always gives me a Kelly or Birkin that it’s in high demand or in a neutral color.
    She knows I’m patient so she rewards me with the best bags.
    So be patient and stop being desperate, just like Dacob said.

    So I was in Monaco 2 weeks ago. Went into Hermes excited with my daughter to pick out a scarf as a souvenir. I was extremely polite, well dressed and we were treated like dirt. My friend who was with me and is French almost went off on them but I was so humiliated and begged him not to and we just left. I almost burst into tears.
    Dior on the other hand was so nice to us and I bought something there. It has really put me off Hermes.

    I honestly find Hermes disgusting. Don't get me wrong I love luxury, but what they make people go through to obtain these utterly basic, boring bags is degrading and borderline extortion. No shade to anyone who likes them, we all have different tastes, but I genuinely don't see the appeal. I can find something just as sturdy and much better looking at TJMaxx for under $100 _and_ not have to convince some snooty salesperson that my money is good enough to take.

    I only buy what I want and don’t play games. I personally don’t like having to proof my worth to a brand. That said, sometimes you can just have luck.
    I only had a small ( for Hermès at least) purchase history with Hermès and my husband went to the boutique the day after I had a c section, to cheer me up. I called him while he was there, to tell him wich shoes I wanted. During that conversation the SA overheard him and then congratulated him on the birth. My husband got apparently tears into his eyes and shook his head, saying we don’t have a baby to bring home and he doesn’t want to talk further about it. The SA offered him a Kelly that day, after he bought two pairs of shoes and a piece of jewelry. Prior to that day we mostly had bought equestrian gear for our horses at Hermès, like pads, stable buckets, saddle pads and blankets. The SA had asked my husband after he said he’s ready to lay the shoes and jewelry, if there’s anything else that could maybe make his wife smile. And he said , maybe you can note her for a bag she wants, for some day. Then she said, we’ll I have a Kelly 25, wich I am free to offer you. He bought it that day. She became my SA and has been since three years. I later learned that she had a late pregnancy loss just a few months prior. It was a moment of human connection, that happened, between the SA and my husband. It’s a special SA and client relationship to this day. She’s amazing. Of course this didn’t lessen my pain but it brought someone into my life that I consider a friend and a bag that I connect with my son in a not painful way.

    Ironically I am not a huge spender - and my home Hermes store closed. So i used stores where I traveled for work. One was in a smaller area in the USA and I bought a few things from my SA - and from her I have been offered 2 Birkins (never bought them and never asked for them either - I told her after the second offer that it was sweet of her she was but it wasn't my style and I couldn't fathom spending that much on one bag for my lifestyle. One was a B30 in Etain and the other was a B30 in Barenia Fauborg - she knew I loved barenia as I had purchased a Halzan in barenia from Paris). I think the store just liked me. I didn't make crazy demands - I didn't try to force "wishlists* - they loved looking at pictures of my horses and chickens. I have only bought things I truly loved. If they "sniff" the desperation they will take advantage of it - I mean I kind of don't blame them. They get commissions on everything else why exactly would they offer a quota bag to someone who may not "spend" as much as others.

  • @GraceChen838
    @GraceChen838 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    配货 - pei huo means to put a list of goods together so I guess it's like making a wish list. it's ridiculous ....so I would buy preloved anytime. I think the Asian market has been poorer - lower social economic compared to Western Countries for a long time, and now our previlege is rising, so consumerism and status symbols are seen by some to be covetable and being a symbol of wealth....but it's such a show off attitude and trying too hard imho. I am Asian and one of those middle class poor ones that can't afford these - lols. And I think a lot of Westerners also view people from Asian countries as where fake items comes from, so the moment they see an Asian client walk through the door, the barriers come up straight away. but in all honesty, that's not most of us.....in fact for me living in a Western Country, I crave originality from the Asian continent, of which, there are a lot or rising. I value originality of anything even if artisan made over mainstream.

    I think I've spent about $7,000 in Hermes so far but I don't think I'm getting offered a Birkin any time soon. But I only bought things I actually like and use so I'm ok with it. But it would be nice not having to jump through these hoops. I wouldn't mind getting a non-quota bag, if I actually liked any of them enough to spend $4k-$9k on a single bag but I find most of their bags rather ugly.

  • @antoa5825
    @antoa5825 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    To me, it's not just the desperation of "needing" a Birkin or Kelly to prove your status, but that the whole experience in Hermes stores is masochistic. Not just the queue, and the snobbery, but the lack of ANY items that aren't the usual "bait". I went to 3 different Hermes stores looking for a bag that I know they make, but for whatever reason they don't have anywhere (obs not a quota bag or one of their other "entry" level bags). They can't look up inventory, they can't tell you if that bag is available, and they can't order it. So what exactly are the options? Visit every Hermes on the planet to see if the bag is at that location? I can understand that their items are good quality, but I don't feel the need to beg or chase after people to take my money.

    • @storygirl33
      @storygirl33 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "They can't look it up, see if it's available or order it." In an day where my cell phone is a hand held conputer . That's like they are without modern technology actually worse as in the 17 and 18th century you could commission or order something. Especially if it was a luxury item, could pay the artisan to make it. Hermes can't claim luxury status with such poor service.

    • @antoa5825
      @antoa5825 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@storygirl33 Exactly! The whole experience at Hermes is anything BUT luxury. As Dacob likes to say, the only true luxury is time. So, spending 30 minutes in line, plus another 30 minutes waiting in the store for someone to help you, only to be told that there's nothing available, does not feel "upscale".
      My husband and I recently returned from Italy, where he had a sports jacket custom made, along with dress shirts. He was able to choose the fabric, the cut, the width of the collar or lapel, whether he wanted a monogram, etc. And then we had everything shipped back home for us. Was it more expensive than off the rack? Of course. Was it still LESS expensive than off the rack Hermes? Yes. Was it infinitely more pleasant than going to any of the luxury chains? Also yes.
      It's insane to think that bespoke has become easier to access than these stores that used to pride themselves on exclusivity.

  • @Enchanteralle
    @Enchanteralle ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's ridiculous how people have to be forced to spend on other things they don't want just to have a chance to buy a quota bag. I feel like a lot of SA at Hermes are rude and unhelpful anyways. 99% if the time, no SAs greet customers at Hermes. The boutiques I visited had no one opening the door for me. I bought a couple accessories in the past and SAs just treat me like a quick transaction. I was on vacation last month and visited Hermes out of curiosity....same type of attitude. I saw 3 SAs just standing inside chatting with each other. Another one in front of the doorway stared at me and did not greet me. Instead she looked over at this Mandarin speaking couple in front of me and she followed them around. I feel like a lot of the SAs target Mandarin speaking clients knowing they'd spend $$. I feel discriminated most of the time. I never feel this way when I visit other brands. People need to wake up and learn that they shouldn't be treated like they need to prove themselves to buy an item. I'm not going to play the game as I feel that my hard earned money deserves respect.

    If you are not happy with the SA fired them! Try another SA! My first SA was not responsive nor helpful for two years and I finally had enough. One day I walked into the store without an appointment so of course the SA I’ve been buying from wasn’t available, lucky me another SA was available and helped me to get a few things and the whole experience was so lovely I asked the SA to follow up all my requests. The SA I have relationship now understand my taste, very helpful with my purchases and totally get that I like the brand and not buying random stuff just to get a BKC and I got offered a quota bag just in few months without spending crazy amount of $ and I didn’t play the game at all. I bought everything I like and I’m not afraid to reject things that I don’t like. People need to stop playing “the game” because any smart SA would take the avantage and milk as much $ as they can before offering the quota bag. I think there are some $ driven SA who play the game and some still understand the idea of customer service especially to those who appreciate, understand and loyal to the brand. Find a SA that works for you!

In the past, I heard those Chinese SA will tell their clients straight forwardly that it’s 1:1 pei huo if they want a Constance or 2:1 for a birkin or Kelly. Afterwards in recent years it has turned ambiguous as the SA were taught not to explicitly mention the purchase ratio so as to avoid comparison and dispute among their clients. Anyway, I’m no mainlander, just a Singaporean subscriber who often visit these Chinese website to gain information on luxury trends.

    I feel like a lot of people are idolizing a logo rather than having their own sense of style. In Hermes' case it is the shape and style of the birkin that became that logo for them which is why it is the most sought after piece at Hermes. Also Hermes doesn't do what Chanel does with the classic flap which is to make different iterations of the birkin. You either are lucky enough to get offered the birkin to achieve status or you don't. While at Chanel you can still buy a similar style to the classic flap that still bears the CC logo without paying the price of the classic flap while achieving said status. For a time, these bags were bought for the style they poses, but now it's all about the logo.

    I buy what I like from Hermes. I happen to like a lot of their products. But I travel A LOT. Like every month. And my local boutique does not have a lot of products I am interested in. So I bought the Hermes Apple Watch online and the local boutique did not even adjust my strap because they don’t have leather specialists capable of punching one hole in the strap. I went instead to a Chicago boutique where my adjustment was addressed in 5 minutes. I also bought a few small items when I was there. I buy gifts at Hermes for my family in Europe because my local boutique a lot of times does not have the items I request. So spending $10K at Hermes is easy. Doing it with one sales associate to “build the profile” in a situation when selection is limited and the boutique does not even get bags like 24/24 and Picotin, is impossible. I resolved that if I want a Birkin one these days, I will get it resale. Much less hustle, more selection, and far better value considering that a Birkin I will most likely get is in size 35 because I like big bags and in the end of day, it’s a big heavy tote bag.

    Hermes is a business. They have a right to play whatever games they want whether they advertise it or not; you don't have to play. It's not just luxury goods. It's the same with any other industries. I.E. alcohol. Liquor stores will get allocated the special bourbon/beer if that store sells a ton of shitty beer. Then you got the truck chasers going after those special items and the store has the right to not sell to you. Especially the one-two time flippers. It's just fact of life. Nothing to cry about honestly; it is embarrassing.

I would rather pay a flipper than the store then I don’t have to buy things I don’t want and don’t have to wait to spend my money. A flipper has the bag I have the funds. I give the funds to get the bag, the end. I don’t have 20 place settings 90 twilles, 6 Apple Watches telling the same time, 5 pieces of FJ that I only wear to my home office and to Walmart, 2 Blankets, 10 pairs of shoes….oh yea and still NO bag!

    Sorry to get terribly Aussie on you here but the Hermes "journey" or "game" is a wank! And it makes a fool of people which is why the lady was left with "a bad taste in her mouth". It is offensive to me that there are people wealthy enough to happily play this game when they could do something far more meaningful with the same amount of money, i.e. think of the amount of good you could do if you gave that exact amount to charity. Oodles of lives could be changed for the better, but no, they'd rather have yet another bag to flex with when at lunch with the girls!
    Honestly, if a person is not a highly focussed collector (like Jesse) then why else are they doing it? The inaccessibility of the product is artificial and the attainment of the product is to give over privileged people something to do because the rest of their lives are so easy. "Look at me, I am so rich I can own Hermes" right? Would most people even know about these products if they weren't hyped as status symbols? No they would not. So be careful what you wish for because these products could very well turn into a badge of bad character especially if the world's economy and environment keep going the way they are.

    Yeah......shopping in Asia is quite annoying, and that's a understatement!!! It's all about keeping up with the Joneses. And the majority of the SA's know that the ones who get the bags are resellers too😎and still they sell to them instead of serving the real customers. Thinking of quit spending my dough there (only buy what I like/need) and just go to EU 1/2 times a year. ......

    I wonder if anyone has done the math of how much playing the game costs vs buying resale. if you're already spending at least the bag's list price on useless things plus the cost of visiting the boutiques plus the bag itself, at what point is it cheaper to buy resale? absolutely absurd.

      b) it can be a stolen bag. see Tamara's story how she found many of her stolen bags on a market.
      for these reasons I don't want to buy resale. but i am not reach enough to play the game.

    Do you think that lots of customers have to purchase Hermes goods (prior to being 'allowed' a B or K ) that is equal to, or that is similar to, the value you would receive if you resold a bag once you'd 'scored' it? Because you can make a lot of money once you have the bag & sell it.

    • @SuperDacob
      @SuperDacob  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depends which country you are shopping at. In most European countries you do not need the equal purchase amount in other goods first but in Asian countries there seem to be way more obstacles for customers to overcome before they can finally buy a quota bag. In America the rules are a bit more confusing as it appears that many boutiques and sales associates or managers decide on the spot if they want to sell a quota bag to a person or not. Depends on their relationships I suppose but also on how influential the customer might or might not be. All this is just alleged of course.

      Thank you Dacob! It's so interesting as a fascinated observer, to see how strong pull for the Hermes brand is - I'm sure it's because of the scarcity & elusiveness of the quota bags! It's the no rhyme or reason, no golden key tactic that Hermes use. It reminds me just a little of Squid Games! It's genius marketing! It plays into our inbuilt propensity to compete and is so frustrating for those who have the money right there to spend - who have been taught that money always talks! Interesting that they have the power to drive people crazy when they can't have what they want! I've always enjoyed your videos on the subject!! 🥰🤗💖💖💖

Although I completely understand the Hermès amazing Marking creating this magical aura around the Birkin and the Kelly, I’m not partaking! You see these bags coming into the resale market daily, they are not rare or hard to come by! They should raise the prices to the level of the resale market, and let customers just order (and prepay) the bag that they want.
