It took about four months to design this route in my spare time. I used a combination of Google Maps, Caltopo, USGS topo scans, Satellite Imagery, Open Street Maps, Strava Heat Maps, and pieces of routes from bikepacking.com(Stagecoach 400 and Plateau Passage). I starting riding from San Diego but that section was a disaster... anything south of Hwy 94 was only for border patrol, anything north of Hwy 94 was private property. I hit three different dead ends, got interrogated by the border patrol, and then decided to just ride on Hwy 94 which was super busy. I'd recommend taking the bus to Cameron Corners and start there. I encountered snow a few times as well, usually above 9,000 feet elevation... bring proper footwear and gaiters if you plan on crossing these. My shoes leaked and it was almost like being barefoot. I marked out the water sources which seemed dependable, but it's always better to bring a little more than you need. I brought a 3 litre Platypus Big Zip and a 10 litre MSR Dromedary. The Dromedary works great as a pillow too ;) The most difficult section for food is from Yucca Valley to Lone Pine. It wasn't ideal stocking up at the i15 Gas Station on $110 worth of trail mix, dried fruit, jerky, and energy bars. The Ballarat store doesn't actually sell groceries, the owner gave me food from his own kitchen. The amount of climbing on this section is also brutal!
Fat bike? Plus bike? MTB? Road Bike??? There are sandy sections dispersed across the entire route. The Mojave Desert has the highest concentration of sandy roads and Utah not quite as much. Nevada was 95% MTB rideable. Conditions can change depending on when the last rain storm hit. I've heard a minimum of 3" tire width for the desert, but I've only tried 4.8". There were sections that I was riding at 3 psi to stay afloat. Most of the route is isolated, some places might only be visited a few times a year... being stranded would be stressful. I went tubeless with Maxxis Minions, FattyStrippers and Stan's Sealant which worked flawlessly. I carried two spare tubes but never needed them.
What brand are those panniers and frame bag? I made them! They are lightweight, durable, and designed to mount snug on the bike. The fabric is water resistant Cordura. I wouldn't say they're waterproof, but perfect for dry conditions in the desert.
Recorded with an LG V20 smartphone.

It's amazing how 47 minutes is so much better spent watching your video, compared to the same amount of TV programming (1 hour minus ads). The effort and personal sacrifice of time required to make something like this, by one man, blows my mind. I hope as many people appreciate it as possible.
NTDFMaverick Makes me wish I had done the same in my younger years
I feel the same. He does a lot of work to bring this to us.
Just here for the 10th time to say this is my favorite TH-cam video ever made, it’s like fine wine it just gets better with time 🍷
Probably the best TH-camr of the generation...the very first internet generation.
I have watched this movie a few times over a few years and it always impresses me greatly. The film making, endurance, attitude, humor, etc, are all A1. The effort to cycle a loaded fat bike climb after climb, day after day, is not something just anyone could do. Awesome stuff.
Unbelievable. Such amazing work. The music selection was spot on as usual. I can't fathom the effort involved in making something like this. Hats off to you sir.
I was just gonna type what you said before I seen your post. The soundtrack was freekin' cool......This was the first F.F. video I ever seen and I just rewatched it.......toughest human alive he is!!
Was this foresty forest orginal 🎶 music ??
@@cathyevans9610 nope. Just well curated tracks
I did all this in my Honda civic that's my writing
Foresty has this happy-go-lucky attitude.....laughs "oh well, I didn't want to go that way anyway. There's always next time." The fortitude and stamina....this guy is truly a veteran of back country travel. His videos are contagious.....bring me more! And the soundtrack, WOW! Thank You, Foresty!
the narration in these earlier videos give me major Red Green Show vibes. I love it!!!
I just have to tell you. You are not just a TH-cam video maker. You my friend are a word class videos and photographer. Your fantastic.
It's so cool coming back to these from where your page is at now and just being as stoked as the first time I watched them. Amazing soundtrack too. You rock dude
in 2022 i agree totally. these long distance trail video's got me in to cycling in 2018 finding out about the local trails in my area. these set of 2018 videos stand out and are special to my mind. the effort taken to produce these videos with choice of music fit very well. these unique and special videos opened up my imagination and horizons in a way i had never thought about before.
I love these videos even more than the current content for sure! And I’ve never bikepacked just done a lot of road-tripping and backpacking in the mountains but I just love this. I’ve been to most of these areas with my RAV4 but I’d love to do a chunk of this route with a bike just like he did
One man.
One bicycle.
And ten thousand gorgeous desert and mountain vistas.
Over 3,400 miles and over 240,000 feet climbed with a 100 pound bike!
You, sir, are a super athlete. I don't know where you get the energy, stamina and fortitude to complete such an unbelievable bike tour.
Much respect and gratitude for all of the extra work involved in filming this epic journey!
I bought a fat bike two months ago and next summer am returning to Alaska to bike across the state. Been bike touring 37 year and 250,000 miles in North America since 1982 when I was 26. I am 63 now, be 64 before my next Alaska tour! Love your videos!
Living the dream 👍
I’m going through some old Forestry Forest and can’t believe I missed this one, simply incredible. Brightened up my Sunday in a wet and dark Scotland, thanks and stay safe 👍 🏴 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🚲 🌳 💧 🍺
I'm going through Foresty videos too.....amazing camera work, great humour and unbelievable resilience ......Cheers from Australia :)
Dude, I thought you were just a van lifer but damn, I am seriously impressed. Look forward to seeing you on that next great adventure!
i thought the same bro, i didnt know about this bike land scape videos, this guy is a loner warrior, cool!!
Lol “van life” is just stupid affluent Instagram type trendies who wouldn’t know a thing about the real van dwelling or bike touring this guy does. They would’ve given up on the first day and called mom to pick them up.
I hope you have checked out some of his other bike tours. He is a hammer for sure.
One of the best exploring docu I ever watch :) Bravo....especially the music you chose, just AWESOME!
I am only 1 min 28 seconds in and its epic shot after epic shot. Great photography!
Totally awesome video on the retina screen and great music. I am a Snakes fan now!
thanks Alan! their music was really suitable for this video I think!
Don't anybody move! Thumbs up already! The long awaited western renegade bike route is here and kick ass music! Thank you, ForestyForest!
No problem, glad I can have everyone come along and experience it.
Watching this again, *THIS IS BADDASS INSANE*
Isn’t it? I come back every now and then and enjoy it even more than anything he makes now even though I do understand him moving on from bike touring!
Mind blowing stuff Forest...those landscapes are so timeless...it really is like going back in time. You are a true modern day cowboy with a fatbike as your steed. Inspirational m8.
Hi Foresty Moresty. Between work and overtime I've binged watched ~75%+of your videos. Imho, this is the best one, it is the core essence of your channel: raw simplicity, man vs nature, man vs himself, the will to keep going, the beauty in the tremendous struggle, the example of the .0001% of the top 1% looks like. Lately in your newest videos you've mentioned you are running out of plans ("cobbling together last minute" agendas) and don't really know what to do. I say go back to your roots, go back to the times (like this Western Renegade video) it sucked in the middle of nowhere with minimal daylight in harsh weather and pushing your bike and gear uphill for miles to go. You'll find your inspiration there. Peace and blessings my man! I wish you tremendous success and hope you never change as you become more world famous.
A part of me tends to agree with you.....If Foresty is looking for something to do, go back to his roots. Another part of me says: Foresty would hard pressed to top his epic fat biking trips in the western United States. Few, if any, have done anything close. He, single handed, filmed, edited, sound tracked and posted some of the most epic footage on You Tube. A guy gets a little older and reflects on his accomplishments and then............ On the other hand, he is young enough that the sky is still the limit........
This is, by far, your best video. Your tasteful approach to your videography is only surpassed by your adventurous spirit. You're truly a rare breed!
All I have to say is, this is amazing. Ok, a bit more. I'm hoping that in time and if my health conditions improve. I would love to take a bicycle ride across the TAT. Not, the typical well known Trans American Trail meant for bicyclist Route 76. There is another one that goes from North Carolina to Oregon and mainly 80 percent gravel and dirt roads normally used for 4 x 4's, and adventure motorcyclist. Also called the Trans American Trail. A few people on bicycles have tried it already. Just under 4,900 miles and about 340,000 of elevation gain. Roughly about 15 percent asphalt mainly in North Carolina at the beginning, then becomes dirt in the western mountains in North Carolina and Virginia. Anyway! This video definitely inspires.
Very impressive. They certainly would be interested in the video that outlines how you preparing for a ride like this. Maps, etc.
Also impressive is what seemingly would take a considerable energy every time you run ahead to set up a camera up, or stages shot simply for you to pass by for the sake of making a good video. I think you could add a few more miles to your total. And then there is the never ending task of managing dead batteries and memory cards. Bravo.
Just awesome again
I am so touched by your fortitude, free spirit, the views, the scenery.
It is just so unreal, so so so beautiful. Thank you for your courage, and the filming done.
No one like you so done so much to elevate our soul, and open the eyes to this wonderful wild west ad you have done.
A TRUE PIONEER. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Exactly true!
Another fabulous film, to someone from the UK it really gives an impression of the size of the US and all the wide open space, you are a very determined and accomplished traveller, it's great to be able to share your journeys, thanks.
I love Simon's van life videos, Rocco the dog, impressive summits and real-deal crevasse glacier crossings. But these bike videos, I like. I like a lot! Slower pace, not as in tune with views / clicks/ money, etc. (which as a person who was able to retire at age 53, I understand). His Going East across the West is my fav...
I agree with you, AG, but when one considers the time and energy that went into making even one of these gorgeous bike videos, Foresty probably makes a lot more money on the shorter ones he is making now. Maybe when he gets enough to retire comfortably, he'll go back to producing bike videos just for love of the art of video production. Or maybe he has some other ideas of projects that he may want to pursue at that time, that he isn't sharing.
Love all of his work.
Absolutely outstanding! Thank you for taking us with you.
👍🏻
Really love the 'hot tub' in the middle of nowhere......I would have done the same. Come off the trail all grimy and see that great opportunity to bathe and soak in the sun............. Loved the 'travel agent' descriptions of the cabins............. ALL good stuff!
Forest that was Epic!! Omgosh The landscape and scenery! Your determination and inner strength is over the top Inspiring💜💜💜. Purple hearts to you!! I think you're amazing for van dwelling in Northern Canada. But this - Wow! Beautiful💖💖💖. You are amazing. Definately not boring👍👍👍. Rock on Foresty Forest!!
Havnt turned on my TV in nearly 2 years, but think im going to have to appreciate the scenery Forresty films for us, thank you Sir!
i found this channel after 5 years, its serenity.
I forget how majestic the West is...thank you for reminding me Forestry. You are good at what you do! Don't stop!
So much beauty in one video... It’s unbelievable.
I'm so glad you had a support team of 12 videographers to document this journey. Otherwise, only an elite, highly motivated and skilled badass ##*&$*#(&(# with rare levels of mental toughness would be able to accomplish this by himself.
Ok this might be my favorite episode!
Wow. Late to the party but that was a thoroughly engaging epic back country bike road that no one will ever do the same way again. Absolutely astonishing scenery.
Shout out to this video for introducing me to Shakey Graves
You are one special soul. Music is beautiful.
Love this video the soundtrack fits so well . What an adventure . A life well lived
amazing content, scenery, and filmmaking. I enjoyed the humor of your luxurious cabin stays. Great work.
When I have a stressful day at work (today) I just click play on your videos and just watch/listen while a work and relax. Thank you for sharing these with us
Gorgeous valley scene at 11:43. I love your trip, something I cud not do.
My plan with this video was watch the first minute then skim it and decide whether I wanted to add it to my watch later list. I COULD NOT STOP OR LOOK AWAY! AWESOME! The music and editing are spot on. You should enter a film contest or edit it to a short to enter in a contest. This is USA Public Television quality work. Thank You.
PBS has nothing on Foresty! The quality of the work and the magnitude of the entertainment value is head and shoulders above anything PBS has to offer.
I have watched this before but I watched it again after returning from a eight day trip of desert hiking with my wife. Great video, I am from the east coast but love the west and desert hiking. That wind can be relentless though. One day in shorts and the next in winter hat and coat. I am guilty of always carrying way to much water. I never want to be that guy. Take care and thanks again.
Bro amount of work you put on this video it's incredible, you put the camera first passed by and come back to pick up the camera in every single heel and every single scenario subbed will watch more )
What a transition from then to now; I found you with bike and followed to tiny van to big van. It's sort of magical--your bike days do now. Enjoy all your work.
Wow! You go on some epic adventures! Thanks for posting!
I just got a fat bike. I tried going for a 5 mile ride. I barely made it a mile. Out-of-shape. I got much respect for you.
That tube must hold the old time record for patches!! Hats off my man!! Admiral amounts off courage and just plain ....keep on going....
I am blown away by ur videos. Content Photography Endurance is unmatched Very professional Dude you rock
You must really be physically fit to endure such a long journey. Hope you live to be 100 plus years Foresty
He might, but he also may suffer leg joint or other repetitive strain problems as he ages. His scenic photography is excellent, but I think he should include a few 10 or 20 second clips of supply restocking, doing laundry in a stream, and other neccessities. He makes it look too easy, but I guess that is why so many people worship him, kind of putting him in a "superhero" or "superhuman" status that they love to honor and worship.........
@@davidmarshall718 Worship? No. Admire, and he is just fun to watch. Father time and mother nature will not be denied as we age we also wear out some sooner than later. It all depends on your gene pool.
@@davidmarshall718cycling is zero impact, it has no real negatives as long as you don’t crash😂
I bow down to you Foresty Forest. Thank you for sharing it all brother.
Beautiful story you've told, amazing accomplishment trip itself. 👌
Wow. I can not imagine doing that ride. You are so adventurous. Amazing
One word: EPIC
Epic scenery! Great video. At first, I was thinking 'why the fat bike?' then I saw the terrain and the sandy soil and answered my question.
This video is just too good, this is real inspiration in pixelated form. Even having moved on from your bike touring, this will always be the pinnacle of foresty foresty for me 😎👊
So glad you did this and that I'm following you because I know I will never do this.
At 31:55 the devil that lives in Utah tried acing Foresty with a massive gust of wind outta nowhere. Awesome video, especially the California and Nevada sections. I'd be careful in Utah, very bad mo-jo about that place. A dark, sinister place.
That was the best 47.39 minutes in a while man, looked at great route you planned with some gnarly bits lol, lots of effort and time to plan it, just want to say thanks for sharing dude.
See you on the trail
David
What an incredible life experience! You win my man, you totally win. I'm over here working and living a boring life while you're out there doing that radical sh!*
im very envious
Amazing ride again, really enjoying going back to all your touring videos
Fantastic. Thanks for making your films and bringing me along. As much as I would love to do such rides in beautiful landscapes of the US on a fat bike, realistically I am never going to ride them, so I travel vicariously with you.
The adventures and things you have seen Foresty are truly epic. You are an incredible person.
these videos are fantastic, ive watched all your vminivan/van life vids. i totally missed out o these
Watching this for the second time. Best bike touring video on TH-cam or at least tied with the rest of his bike touring videos. The scene at 32:41 is especially amazing.
I have toured a lot on a bike and I am simply amazed at how lean your bike is in contrast with how much water and food you need to carry for the lack of services.
Thank you for that song by the snakes it made me remember my great grand father and talking to him it helped me get through some pain i was going through thank you from the bottom of my heart
The petroglyphs were amazing!
I love coming back to these bike trek videos. They were insane and awesome.
These videos are so impressive. Can't stop watching
I am back here again, June 11, 2024. It’s even better every time, like any great movie. You always spot more details. I love to Google lots of the places you showcase. It’s a “Foresty in Wonderland Rabbit Hole”.
That was bad ass! I could feel my legs burning. And I complain about a 20 mile ride.
We have a phrase in the UK that describes this man - "as mad as a box of frogs". Thank goodness he is; to live a life without his videos would be barren indeed.
Really thanks for this...
Yes! Beer Beans and 18 hours on a tiny seat, what dreams are made of in Death Valley.
I love how he leaves the camera and comes back to retrieve it over and over again
Wow, just wow! Another incredible video. You are very inspiring.
You and Lohan are killing it for sure. That was AWESOME 📸👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻📸
Thanks Drew!!
is Iohan with I like India, not Lohan dude... ffs this is the second time...lol
I just watched all of your videos while I'm recovering from shoulder surgery. Totally amazing!!! Man, I can't wait to get back on my bike.
That’s a hardcore adventure. Respect.
Such an awesome ride. Slowly I'm catching up on your vids, and they just get better and better
Sorry for the additional comments... but based on Simon's Going East across the West video, I later did a partial reverse route from Natural Bridges Monument to Page AZ. via the Burr Switchbacks, Escalate, to Big Water... and traveled those exact Utah backroads. All the while thinking of his much bigger routes in this area. Inspiration for sure!
One of the best video around...I'll be watchin again anf again.. outstanding!
Thanks for taking me along for the ride. It's better you do it than me. I can't do that. Someone should fix up those cabins for people to stay in. They are a piece of history and, is a shame to see them like that.
Love the movie, deserve an award! best from Norway
Awesome effort
Absolutely incredible! I tip my hat to you sir. You’re a legend!
It's the 2020 lockdown and I am stuck inside. But Foresty keeps my spirit out there in those wild open places.
During lockdown I was out hiking and running.
Epic Soundtrack✌
To enjoy The Beauty of Nature !
You accomplished marvelous Fatbike Tour ! Awesome life Journey !
This and other videos by Foresty Forest are the best stuff on TH-cam. What he must go through to set camera, ride through the frame, and go back and retrieve the camera. I'm in awe. Just riding the route would kill me. Let alone all the extra effort for camera work. I live in Utah and haven't seen most of the stuff this Canadian rode his bike through. I've got to get out of the house, and ride my Prius to some of those places. Thanks Foresty!
I love how you put this film together! Thanks for sharing with us.
Fabulous countryside and magical clip, thanks.
Love the music
Excellent! you must have legs of steel. Enjoyed every minute.
U r EVER so welcome.. I was so determined and let nothing get in my way when I was young and learned a lot, glad to share info with someone who let's nothing get in his way...I so admire u ur mom is a very lucky woman...lol
awesome! thank you for sharing it with us
Wow, you have made my Friday here in Australia. Superb
My all times best!
so beutiful, ty to upload, u made my day, im a biker too, and feel the nature like u do is just sublime.. gl pal u are an ispiration.
Another fantastic video of an epic journey! Thanks for posting.
Man, you're great! What a picture, what a views, what a travel! As a traveler, I was very much inspired by you.Wish you best in your journeys.
Keep riding!
In the USA, as long as you didn't blow anything on the alcohol meter, all you have to do to get away with murder is start sobbing on the witness stand, after you pull out the big hankie in your pocket with the onion concealed, wiping away the buckets of tears. You blurt out "I just didn't SEE HIM!...boo hoo hoo... Oh God..*I didn't see him..*" followed by more heavy breathing and sobbing uncontrollably as they lead you off the stand. You will not serve any jail time whatsoever in this country. "It was an accident." Same as juries convicting cops who shoot unarmed people here when they use the line, "I was afraid for my life." Juries let them off almost every time. It's not always that way in most other developed nations, especially for a cyclist hit from the rear or for cops who kill unarmed citizens.
