    Great vid... The biggest takeaway for me is the ATP FH has 3 distinct biomechanical traits : 1. The chest squares up to the net before the hand comes thru the forward swing , 2. The hitting shoulder is externally rotated prior to the fwd swing (most accentuated in guys like Nadal and Federer who puff out their chest to stretch their pecs and front deltoids)
    3. The fwd swing involves a limp / relaxed arm that trails the torso as it rotates into the ball . This creates lag.
    4. Hitting shoulder is almost always vertically lower than the non hitting shoulder and results in a downward slope of the shoulder blades on take back. This helps to generate an upward fwd swing once torso rotation is triggered, rising into the ball.
    5.. Contact is initiated once the torso is squared to the net. Timing of the release of the pre-stretch pec and deltoid muscle , triggering natural release / pronation of the forearm is the magic potion . This helps add speed to the racquet head maximizing brushing action. W.o unnecessary linear muscling of the ball. Gives a banana profile to the ball trajectory thru the air and some side spin upon pitching , depending on the the contact point.
    The whole arm collapses immediately on contact and the finish is natural depending on the hgt of the incoming ball.
    Phew !!

    This video, in many ways, can be revolutionary for those players who seek more power+spin on their forehands but have a more "traditional" foundation of their strokes; such as myself. Most of my forehands would be considered WTA with the elbow "in" against the more modern open stance + elbow out style. 1000 thumbs up to this, guys. This is truly brilliant! Keep up the great work.

    hi guys nice video! (but pls keep Jazz outfit less tight.. hard to concentrate on tennis this way..:P )
    Anyow.. do you think it would be impossible for most female pro player to develop an ATP style forehand? Due maybe to the fact that you need a level of strength hard to achieve for a woman? If it was possible then most coaches now should try to engrain that style in women athletes..
    I also think you should give a little credit in this discussion to Rick Macci, who 's been a pioneer in pointing out the exact same differences..

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +riccardo odraccir I think for sure it's possible to have female players hit more ATP style. It happens already and we'll see more of it in the future.

    • @ThanhaoCong
      @ThanhaoCong 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched the video, and I believe the difference occurs because WTA racquets are lighter than ATP (I don't have any evidence to back this). I myself had a much bigger swing (WTA style like the video said) before when I used light racquet (300gr unstrung). After some researches, I found out that using heavier racquet doesn't mean being less maneuverable while needing LESS EFFORT to hit the same shot. So my stroke is naturally more compact while maintaining maneuverability, power, improving stability and my arm doesn't get fatigued. My current racquet is 350gr and I'm a small guy (1,68m).
      So I think that WTA players definitely can have ATP style stroke if they try heavier racquets. I believe they could improve their game also :).
      PS: One ATP player that significantly changes his strokes is Novak Djokovic. At early career, we can see that he had very wide swing in all strokes. Time by time, his strokes are more compact now. I believe that's because he weighted up the racquets :D.

    How come always the guys that could not do teach?
    How come examples used from top players are from warm up training session and we never see the end result (the ball speed, spin placement ...)?
    Why every coach I met is telling one thing and when they play and actually do good shot its not what they teach?
    Why everybody assumes that the best way is the way the top players believe it should be done?(Time has proven that Bjorgs way was not best, Sampras way was not , Agassi was not ....)?
    Why don't you try to find best way and actually prove it yourself?

I was going to go towards the wta style but seen the girl Daria kasatkina and how well she can deal with oncoming power, take the ball on the rise and create great angles as well as create great power for a young girl. Any thoughts guys?

    • @jazzswingsoulblues
      @jazzswingsoulblues 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bear in mind there are reasons why the ladies hit the ball differently - women generally have less muscle mass, smaller shoulders etc, and therefore will generate power in different ways to the men!
      The shorter more explosive action might not be the most appropriate for a 14/15 year old to generate pace - might not get the best out of their physique / could lead to injury if hip strength isn't good enough, for example.
      WTA vs ATP forehands are different not necessarily better!

    Del Potro has a WTA style forehand! Simple, powerful, efficient!

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Del Potro doesn't have a WTA style forehand, yes his swing is very big compared to many other ATP players but his racket stays on the right side of his body, doesn't go behind his back. That is the common trait on the WTA forehand, it breaks the line and goes behind the back as the girls tend to be more flexible and use the extra space to generate power. Del Potro also uses a very different racket angle during contact compared to other players, hence why he can smash the ball extra flat.
      Thanks for watching
      Simon

    • @na_der
      @na_der 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, he's keeping the racquet to his side. My point is regarding where the racquet is facing during the racquet drop. All ATP players, as far as i saw, racquet facing downward during the drop right before the foreward swing. While Del Portro doesn't let it face downward, just like the WTA players. What do u think?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see what you mean with the racket face, he keeps it facing to the side of the court, never down. Federer also does that on certain forehands, he tends to close it more when he wants to increase the topspin. There are other ATP players who use that same method though so Del Potro is not the only one.
      Thanks for tuning in

  • @quiddy
    @quiddy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason why women have the swings they have is because it maximizes the power they have. If they tried to do the men's forehand, they would hit with less power, unless they bulk up like Stosur and Henin. Not to suggest anything more than what im stating, I think Stosur and Henin are more the exception than the rule in WTA. And using them as an example is not really a good one to make. Other than Stosur's US Open win she's struggled to be consistently in the top. While you can't attribute that to her technique specifically, it also doesn't give the pro-atp forehand argument a good example of it being applied in the women's tennis.

    • @imateapot51
      @imateapot51 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. Women do the WTA forehand because that is what they watch. There is a wrist lag with the ATP forehand that adds tremendous racquet speed and it requires timing not strength. The wrist is relaxed as the racquet goes back, then as the player rotates his hips and the hand forward the racquet face continues going back and then it rebounds, and whips forward into impact. This is a very difficult swing to learn because the relaxed wrist is a very very difficult skill. But it is not new. That is how you throw a baseball, football, and how you whip someone with a towel in the locker room.

    • @imateapot51
      @imateapot51 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bobice555 The reason this ATP technique is not widespread is because it is so hard to learn, especially if you do it like the ATP pros. They have a high drop and still get a lag. Timing must be exceptional to get the whip/lag with a high drop. If the racquet stops moving you do not get much of a lag. You can bring the racquet back mid level and you get the lag and much easier to time because maybe your arm has not gone all the way back and it is time to hit the ball - you can. A person on youtube, Chrstophe Delavaut put together some excellent videos on the technique but ATP media had them removed for copyright infringement. If girl says I want to hit with Serena's technique because she is the best all time, just make sure she runs like Serena, is built like Serena and serves and returns like Serena. A better question may be why do the men on the ATP not whip/lag their backhands?

    • @felicianojoni5560
      @felicianojoni5560 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +imateapot51 it's not only timing. The very technique you described which you claim are inherent in other activities such as whipping a towel, baseball throw, football throw requires the quick muscle contractions that come more naturally for men. THAT IS WHY THESE ACTIVITIES THAT YOU MENTION ARE MOSTLY DONE BY MEN. Do you see girls and women flick their towels or handkerchiefs, throw baseballs, throw footballs in the same frequency as do boys and men? No. Precisely because these activities require a certain physiological trait that comes more natural to men than to women - and that is quick short muscle fiber contractions that initiate the whipping movement you describe.

    • @imateapot51
      @imateapot51 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You are kidding right? Girls can not throw a baseball? They throw softballs just fine. I have never been in a girls locker room so I do not know if they can whip towels. But why no go on youtube and enter bullwhip and see if any girls can whip a bull whip. It takes a relaxed wrist and that is all. Any girl can do this. After that the racquet and Isaac Newton laws take over. Serena dominates because her technique is good enough because of her body. Same with a lot of other top women players. In the ATP 10000 have professional bodies and can run fast so technique is paramount. And the WTA is a joke. When you watch the NBA finals does it cut away to the Women's league? Same with every other sport. By the way, I demonstrate this technique to students holding a 30 inch wood dowel with two fingers and firm wrist to show the wrist is not doing it. Then they get a physics lesson. It is not on the WTA because the WTA is BS. Justin did pretty well for a tiny girl. In closing, the relaxed wrist is so that your wrist (forearm muscles) does not prevent the racquet face to continue going back as the hand and throat are going forward, because that would prevent the whip.

    • @felicianojoni5560
      @felicianojoni5560 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +imateapot51 WTA is a joke? What a misogynistic, chauvinistic statement. Justine Henin did well for herself because she lifted weights and got in the best physical shape she could be. Any other time when she was out of shape or even the least bit injured, she could not dominate and had to quit the game early on. If it was all about timing, then she wouldn't need to be as fit and strong as she got herself into. You need extraordinary strength to hit with her strokes and win. You think the women would want to go through the same strength Training as Justine's or Samantha stosur? Like I said, both had ATP strokes but to beat the other girls with that stroke they had to get stronger. So no, it's not just about timing. You need strength, either innate or gained from training, to adopt the ATP strokes. Stop trying to promote whatever training or coaching regimen that you claim will teach anyone the ATP stroke, at the expense of the WTA. It shows your chauvinistic attitude.

    shall a girl learn atp forehand?

      YES! why not? it's just the swing path, the thing they need to learn is the 'snap' where you decelerate the core for the racquet to snap through your hitting motion.

    the women's forehand and backhand techniques have nothing to do with their serves though. Men just hit harder serves because their bodies are physically stronger

      +DM K No, it is not physical strength, it is the technique of using the body core in coiling and uncoiling. The women's game, with three or four prominent exceptions, is quite poor at that.

    If the women are hitting flat it seems as though the semi western or full western grip would be irrelevant to use. Your female companion looks really awkward with that grip. Maybe an eastern wouldn't twist her all up, I mean she's hitting flat anyway what could it hurt

    This is BULLSHIT. U really shouldn't generalize like that. Gabriella Sabatini, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ons Jabeur and Maria Sakaari all have forehands these instructors would consider more ATP style or extreme Western grip. And conversely, Thomas Byrdich and John Isner have very flat forehands with a more linear path, taking the racquet behind them
