    The British sailors will use the limes to prevent scurvy. They may have used them to preserve food, but I’ve always heard that they use them to prevent the scurvy disease because of the vitamin C.

    • @osric1730
      @osric1730 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yep. It was added to the rum ration in the preparation of grog to prevent scurvy. Its not very effective as a preservative, they used salt for that.

    • @Ohsnapski
      @Ohsnapski ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You would be correct, “grog” is simply a mixture of water and lime with a decent amount of rum in it to keep it from spoiling. Roughly 1oz dark rum 1oz lime juice and 4 oz of water is roughly what they’d be drinking if ya ever wanna try it. Sometimes they also added cinnamon(antibacterial) as well as other citrus in place of limes

    Sam, You missed what makes the most important ingredient for the breakfast crunch wrap. The Creamy Jalapeno sauce! It is not on the California version which just came out and is the worst one, but the bacon and sausage one have it and you have to order extra sauce for it and it is life changing. been eating and making my own version for years!!

    • @the_real_student179
      @the_real_student179 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Curious what your version of that sauce is? Definitely my favorite thing at Taco Bell as well since I always crank the customization option for it to Extra (or add it and set it to extra if it's not already included).

    Limey - a derogatory term for a British sailor. It originated from the British navy's practice of adding lime juice to the sailors grog...giving the sailors a much needed addition of vitamin C to their diets preventing scurvy. Loved the video!

    • @BenMossWoodward
      @BenMossWoodward ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Moondog-wc4vm

      @@BenMossWoodward Limey isn't really derogatory. Neither is Brit, but that did not/does not stop other cultures using it that way since they see or saw the English/UK population as invasive or 'bad for them' That is not meant as judgemental on either the 'Brit's/Limey's' or on the cultures that they met. It IS meant as a judgement on the instinct of ALL cultures to slap a derogatory term on anything new. All prejudiced views should first stop and ask 'Did we ever do that to someone else?' before screaming 'Burn the witch!'

    The best way to keep guac from going brown, is flatten it out evenly in the bowl with a spoon or spatula, then pour a thin layer of water over the top covering it all. It will keep for ages. I usually do it the night before I need it and it stays perfect overnight in the fridge. Gently pour the water out and mop the top of the guac with a paper towel. Easy 👌

Not saying that stuff wouldn’t be delicious, but it’s just not my overall style of cooking. I prefer the things that I would want to eat the leftovers (and not feel guilty about it). Tacos, sandwiches, pastas, meat and veg dishes on the smoker/grill. I know, probably not as click-baity, but that’s the stuff I tend to make. The Greek chicken is one of my favorites.

    Watching & Making Things!
    Ive made many of your recipes, but mostly I get alot of ideas & inspiration from your videos & then make my own things from it. 😁
    Ive always been good with cooking, but certain things I thought I'd never be able to do, (working with dough/etc) & yet came out successful after your teaching. You absolutely give encouragement & so much more.
    Also, the fact that sometimes things aren't perfect/messes happen/cant figure something out/etc, makes me feel so much better that it happens to everyone & even the professionals cuz no one is perfect. But thats how we learn so we CAN make great food. I am honestly truly grateful that you guys show that things arnt always perfect, (like the Italian sausage & cheese bread braid) & (the Chinese strainer making a mess of your sauce for the roast beef dip).
    I used to just get frustrated, upset, & give up when that type of stuff happened to me. And I rarely would try anything I thought I couldn't do.
    But over time through watching your videos, Ive become a better cook, & gained more knowledge & confidence in myself & my skills. Now im not afriad to make something different & can trust my own skills & taste to know that whatever Im making; even if its new, that its probably gunna be good.
    Ive made up several of my own recipes, trusting myself with the ingredients I wanted & they've come out AMAZING!
    Thank you for being real, being hilarious, giving knowledge, giving time & great recipes, teaching us, & helping me build more kitchen confidence!
