The true mark of a genuine classic is that it sounds just as good 40-50 years later, as it did when it came out. It is just as relevant today as it was then: timeless.

My first exposure to A Flock of Seagulls goes like this. I was active military in 1983. We had a four man crew heading to an isolated job site. We were in a small town in Nebraska and driving through endless fields of corn. All four of us were in a great mood, talking and laughing, very rowdy and loud. Then this song comes on the radio and stunned us into silence... all four of us. We were hypnotized by this amazing song, not just hearing it, but feeling it. It was an airy, futuristic song, but it definitely had heart and soul, and a very effective guitar. We didn't want this song to ever end, but of course it had to. When it ended, the disc jockey informed us that it was a new English band called "A Flock of Seagulls" and the song was titled "I Ran." I don't think any of us spoke for the next ten minutes, we were just basking in a melancholy, but yet, very happy and satisfied mood. When we finally completed our job, we drove to the music shop located in that small Nebraska town and all four of us bought A Flock of Seagulls on cassette ... the last remaining 4 copies that the store had. Flash forward 40 years, and I'm still loving this band. I have their entire catalog, including Mike's solo record. This music is truly timeless, and remains highly effective regardless of how often or how many times you listen to it. I feel that Mike Score is a genius. This man actually wrote, played and captured a sound that he was feeling, and those of us that are lucky enough feel it too. I send Mike Score and the band 40 years worth of gratitude.

One of the more incredible uses of the song was in the Cartoon Network show "Symbionic Titan". The animated show was inspired by Genndy Tartovsky's love of the old anime and Sentai tropes of combining robots, aliens exiled to earth and having to defend the planet in order to protect themselves.
While in anime fandom there's been a long tradition of fan-made anime music videos (I have some on VHS that are 35 years old), Gt took it up a notch, and in one episode of the series, the girl that's fallen hard for the heroes robot member (in his human disguise) is practically entranced, dancing with SALS in her heart (and full volume in the show), totally oblivious to the battle down at the seashore between the heroes in their 100 foot robot form and an alien invader of similar size - with the battle lasting throughout the entire song.

Adam, this is one of my favorite videos. A Flock of Seagulls hit my life just as I was leaving junior high moving on to high school. "I Ran" was known by everyone, then this song came out and it blew up at my school. At the school dances, boys on the wall of one side of the gym, girls along the opposite and everyone was self-conscious of "making the march" across the empty floor to choose that girl you wanted to dance with... but, when A Space Age Love Song began to play, that first three chords, EVERYONE hit the dance floor, regardless of if they had someone to dance with. We would always end up dancing with some girl and friendships - relationships - were then formed, literally because that song got the whole group of boy and girl wall sitters to hit the floor and mingle.
"A Space Age Love Song" will always, until the day this 80s kid passes on, will always sit in my heart with a special feeling of that excitement of changing hormones, self-consciousness and that girl you always wanted to stand next to - she's dancing with you to that space age song of love.
... and I was falling in love.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt the same way about this song. It puts me in another world. I’m 21 and don’t listen to much 80s other than some of Pink Floyd’s 80s albums but this song puts me in a trance.

It always annoys me when people call AFOS a "one hit wonder". They had multiple hits from their first 2 albums.

I feel the same way about them. They are not "one hit wonders" and it always ticks me off to hear them called that. Just proves that anyone who says that has no idea what they are talking about. I never liked that term anyway. Whenever I hear someone deride any band as a OHW I Iike to reply, "Well that's one more hit than you have, isn't it?"

@@shadowravyn A Flock Of Seagulls falls into the category of "one hit wonder" where the big hit overshadows their other songs

@@Thomasmemoryscentral Still doesn't apply to them no matter what other people may say.

It’s easy to hear the influence of this song in artists like Killers, Angels & Airwaves, and M83. Also synthwave artists like Timecop1983 and FM-84.

I'm a guitar player. I e been playing since I was a teenager in the late 80s. I'm not good at it, but I love guitar-driven music. Joe Satriani is my favorite player and I tend to lean towards heavier rock and metal. But I've said it before and I'll say it again: Paul Reynolds was a 19-year-old GENIUS writing these amazing guitar riffs. These absolutely perfect guitar riffs.

A Flock of Seagulls was my first concert at maybe 12 or 13 and they where freaking amazing, and they had so many good songs. Nightmare, This is a Story of a Young Heart....The More You Live The More You Love..... And the best part is as much as it can take you back it still holds true today.

Is it just me or is the drumming extraordinary in I ran?
I love the way the drum solo leads into the guitar solo.
The base player playing furiously, it is an amazing achievement for all.
It is in fact a masterpiece❤ from Australia.

So happy you highlight this gem of a song. I was a metal head, but spaceage and wishing made me a Seagulls fan.. For me being a guitar player back in 83' in a time with incredible rock guitarists and me sitting on my bed trying to figure out Randy Rhoads and EVH stuff, Paul stood out for me, so under rated of a guitar player and young.
