You can tell from the jump he didn’t want to hit he wanted to see his friends again so he did it.
Also, this show was huge to me as a kid. It’s how I learned Dave Diamond owned the airport right by me. I went to the restaurant and ordered like $100 in food before I started asking for him so they couldn’t boot me.
I did see him, he waved and the lady was like “that kid likes Berlin” he didn’t seem happy.. like dude VH1 was just here lol. Oh well. He still rules.

For those of us who lived through those early days of M Tv, Flock of Seagulls’ music transports you right back to the halcyon days of the early 80s.

This is my favorite of the "bands reunited" series. I always loved A Flock of Seagulls surreal, new wave sound. They still had that great chemistry for this show, and all of them were on their game. Paul is an amazing guitar player, for sure.
The ONE thing that was made absolutely clear in this video is that the root problem that probably drove this band apart is Mike Score's huge ego.
Ali, Paul and Frank all seem like very likable and level-headed guys, then and now, but Mike clearly has an "I am the band" attitude, then and now.

    • @leaveonlywake
      @leaveonlywake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Mark Twain said "It ain't braggin', if ya done it."
In that way, Mike WAS the band. His idea, he put them together, named them, wrote the songs, led, etc...
Could he have been a better leader, and they wouldn't have fallen apart? We'll never know, but I doubt it. The pressures they were under - doing that many gigs (157 in a row! wow), along with booze and drugs and lifestyle, and Paul such a young person being in the midst of all that - I'd wager it was not "if" but _when_ they flew apart, from someone needing to bow out. An eventuality.
No doubt, the man has an ego :) - and yet, he has every right to it, if you ask me. Have you checked out his Zeebratta release from 2014? If not, here it is - listen, he *still* has it. th-cam.com/video/4CJDeewSNIE/w-d-xo.html

There are so many musically inclined people in the world who love to sing or play instruments, but are terrified of being in the public eye. They cope in many different ways, but that usually means drugs and/or alcohol. These reunion shows just prove how easy it is to hold a grudge and be angry and unhappy and resentful... from a distance for decades. And how easy it is to wipe all of that away and forgive and forget... in an instant... when you get together with someone face to face. Think about how different all of their lives would have been had someone gotten them together in a room with some instruments a decade or two earlier.

Exactly! Was just thinking the same thing sat watching this, if for nothing else, not the music, the fans, the nostalgia, all that aside to get the 4 of them together after the way it all fractured and soared was an achievement itself, it was good to see the warmth amongst them (even if Mike seemed a shade distant compared to the others) . If it helped heal old wounds and reestablish contact between them as friends/family alone then this was so worthwhile, good on vh1 for facilitating it and making it happen! Music is constant it will always be there, bonds can break and ego gets in the way ....time can heal!

I think I saw this for the first time when I was at university, back in 2009. As a teenager with a guitar, getting into 80s alternative stuff that no one else my age cared about, Reyno was such an inspiration. He could play, but he reigned it in because he always knew the right part for the song. When I got my first chorus and delay pedals, I learned "Space Age Love Song" - I wasn't quite good enough for "I Ran" yet - and loved playing that riff, listening as the bass and synth altered the feel as Paul just kept playing those three notes. He's magic, and they were never the same when he left.

Paul Reynolds has been one of my favorite guitarists since their first album came out. His style is so utterly unique and tasteful. Never get tired of listening to him play.
I noticed that Mike's voice wasn't what it used to be, but such is the aging process. I'm happy with what he gave.
The way the other three guys talked about Paul, I was almost ready to see a shrunken little man that keeps casting furtive glances about and a nervous twitch in the corner of his mouth. Wrong! He was still the totally cool guitarist that has all of the chops he needs to impress. Love that guy!
And Frank just cracked me up. He made me feel good. His personallity is just too damn bubbly to ignore or resist. The kind of guy you love hanging out with.
Really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for posting!

I saw them that year also. Saw them at the Mann Music Center in Philly. So, my friend was a big fan of New Wave music and I was a metal head. So I agreed to go see A Flock Of Seagulls and the Fixx, and he agreed to see Black Sabbath. I was skeptical at first, but I was blown away at how great the show turned out to be. I am so glad I went to see that show. My friend is gone now, passed away 6 years ago. I miss him and I miss those days when music was great.

I also was at that Mann show in’83. I was a huge Fixx fan but liked Flock of Seagulls also. Great show by both. FOS was so damn loud as I remember too.
