Could We Live in Bangkok Thailand? 🇹🇭 🤔 Expats Honest Thoughts

  • In this week's video we're exploring even more of Bangkok and also trying to figure out if we could live here? We're making our way through the neighbourhood of Ari and then later heading back to Sukhumvit to give a tour of our hotel.
We start the video hoping on the Bangkok skytrain to a new neighbourhood in Bangkok (for us) called Ari. We've heard good things about it. This neighbourhood feels relatively quiet and the traffic isn't too bad. First off we visit a little complex called GUMP's Ari Community Space which is filled with little shops, cafes and restaurants. While here Trevor stops to get a hair cut.
After GUMP's we go down the street to a restaurant called Thong Smith Ari which specializes in boat noodles, we try those along with some pork ball skewers.
While we're walking we talk about all the pros to living in the city like great food options, fast internet and being close to a major international airport.
Later we head back to the Sukhumvit neighbourhood where we've been staying. We talk a bit about the prices we've seen in the neighbourhood for apartments. Afterwards we give a tour of the hotel we've been staying, The Quarter Phromphong.
    Book the hotel here: www.booking.com/hotel/th/the-...

We "slow travel" full time, and we're never quite sure how to answer people when they ask where we live. We usually just say that we're originally from Toronto, but we "live" wherever we are at the time. There are always negative people looking to bring you down, but it's better just to ignore them and keep doing what works for you. Cheers from Lisbon (where we "live" right now lol).

Trevor and Anna, please ignore the negative Nancy’s… I like your honesty and state how you feel about where you are etc. nothing is ever 100% beautiful or perfect and I like that you share this with us as well as all the wonderful things. Please ignore the people who are negative as they are just unhappy people and do not wish to see others happy. Love your videos and keep travelling and having fun when you are not working.

Try to ignore any negative comments!!! You two really are DELIGHTFUL and give great information - I watched a lot of your videos from Greece and Istanbul before I planned a trip to both places for my husband and me in 2021, it is SO helpful to actually SEE locations/transportation, etc. before booking a trip. You guys are doing a valuable service and are fun to watch!

Bangkok is a good place to live. There’re several livable neighborhoods. Don’t get too panic about a PM 2.5 pollution which happens occasionally a short period of time just like other major cities and Thailand is working on it quite effectively. Millions of people lives there and still stay healthy. Enjoy your stay.

I stayed in Thonglor, ekkamai area for 5 years. A great area since its near to many malls, great restaurants, BTs. If you have the budget of 35k up rental per month, then this is a good option. You have to consider your place of work, too.

    - Thong smith is really good for beef boat noodle, they even have wagyu beef, you should try next time although it’s pricey.
    - Sukhumvit, Thong lor, and Silom are probably the most expensive area for leasing, I’ll recommend Onnut station onward, Ari station onward and Wutthagard station onward. They are a bit outside of middle of Bangkok but still easy for traveling.
    - About weather, it’s messy nowadays because of global warming and it’s not just Thailand but all over the world, please take care.

While BMTA non-aircon red bus is very cheap at 8 baht, it is relatively hot in humid Bangkok all year round. For those Thais who live along Chao Phraya River, there is an alternative. You can patronize Chao Phraya Ferry Service at price less than 20 baht or more for the longest distance. Cash only for fare. The service started about 50 years ago, using diesel engine to propel the boat. However, starting in 2020 there is a new competition of modern aircon electric boat service at a flat fare of 20 baht for all destinations. MINE Smart Ferry accepts Visa/Master Card card or you can buy fill-in card. Cash is not accepted. There is also an aircon electric tourist boat for 30 baht fare. You need to purchase a ticket before boarding a tourist boat. There is also an open-air top deck on tourist boat if you choose to face the weather and have a better view of Chao Phraya River and its environs. For crossing Chao Phraya River to the other side pier, the fare is cheap about 5 baht. However, there is a free ferry service to cross Chao Phraya River to IconSiam and AsiaTique to shop/dine.
BTW, there is also a boat service running along Saen Sap canal from the suburb to heart of Bangkok costing about 20 baht. It is much faster than the metro system for those who live near this canal which runs over 10 kms.

You can’t please everyone all the time. People need to take what they enjoy and skip what they don’t. That’s life. I enjoy your videos and your realness. Your not actors, people should appreciate your real opinions. If someone visited on your fake always positive opinions of somewhere, then people would be disappointed in that. Being honest and real is far more important. And I think your always respectful and polite even when something or somewhere isn’t your favorite.

This is just my own recommendation. Check out condominium called the politan rive in Nonthaburi province closed to bangkok, quite far from bangkok but easily come to the main city by mrt purple line ( about 30 min). You may found a surprise.

If you decide to drop anchor somewhere did you divest yourselves of tiny home, condo or other property first so you are true nomads. I have seen other foreign TH-camrs showing their rental condos, very nice one bedroom or studio in good areas (much nicer than your hotel) and within walking distance to BTS or MRT for US$350 to US$500 a month. I think one of them was near Rama IX road and the other a little further to the east from Sukhumvit (forgot the name of the area). Sukhumvit is a high end area and the condo in the advertisement you were looking must be premium one. Also the fact that it’s a loft (two floors) made it wven more expensive.
If you are really serious about condo rental in BKKa, you coul use an agent to help you find a good one within your budget range.

Although it’s famous for nightlife, there are many areas or beaches in that area that are relatively quieter (e.g. Wong amart) and you might like. Pattaya may just be a regular beach, nothing spectacular compared to those in the South but its quite nice, has everything, only 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Bangkok (and 1 to 1.5 hours from Suvannaphumi airport) and inexpensive compared to Bangkok and the south.

Almost all dishess in Thailand if the food have to mix they'll mix the food for you or they'd serve many separate things but in only one dish just for you to decide you want all ingredients or you want just some but if they serve the food in seperate plate that's mean those food do not have to mix or that's the ingredients that not all people love.
Thai poeple they love to eat soup as something to clear your mouth or to break the food taste and then eat another dishes so example if you guys order the noodle in Thailand there always 2 main base kinds of noodle to choose that you want weter noodle or dry noodle and then you choose kinds of noodle you want and if you ordered Noodle(water type) you'll get just 1 bowl of your noodle with seasoned soup but if you ordered the dry noodle most place would serve you 1 bowl of your noodle with 1 bowl of plain soup(no seasoned) for you to clear your mouth after main dish.

The negative comment thing is totally true! We only just started our channel a little over two months ago, and so there's only really been three negative comments out of a few hundred, but those are the ones you often remember. Just yesterday, we had someone comment on a video telling us to "go home" because we were jokingly talking about the price of an attraction, and were discussing whether it was worth the money or not (the comment wasn't even from a local- all the comments from locals were highly positive). Had someone personally attack our appearance as well (we're both pretty tattooed). We've already learned, there's plenty of jerks out there who look for any reason to be negative. 😂
As far as the "living" thing goes, we kind of have a "three month rule". I feel like when you've got a "base", you've got a local SIM, you've got local shops you go to for daily necessities..at that point, you're integrating and "living" in a place. If we're really just city hopping and not really settled in one spot, we don't count it. But everyone has their own definitions of what is living in a place, and what's not. 🤓

I'm really felt sorry about that my friend but as a Thai let me explain this problem, as this problem is not really a normal negative comments as I read on internet before because there are a lot of people got these problems too for a while especially the TH-camr that doing contents about Thailand even the Thai TH-camrs too and now people on internet they already founded out and it is because the people from the neighbor country that we having some stupid land and some culture problem with them and wanted our Thai people to be their people. And many of their people just use the social media to throw the hate speech and many of them even made their profile like people from the west just to come to bullies and it's already going seriously like countries the countries problem because they bullied even some Thai athletes like Buakaw and movie star like Tony Ja, I do not know what their people are thinking even their president of something already came out on the news since last month and said sorry for Thai people but their people seems like still not want to stop.
Really apologize for these problems guys, hope you guys have a great time here in Thailand.

Now the Bangkok air cruelness is ranked Top 5 cities in the world (Today 6 March 2023 the AQI is 156 (PM2.5 concentration in Bangkok is currently 12.9 times the WHO annual air quality guideline value). I'd say you are traveling and exploring the world. "living someplace" is subjective.. For me.. Living someplace is when you pay taxes for that country. Either way you are living the dream exploring the world one place at a time. And we love following along though out screens.
