In public places, talking louder in our language when there is an American with us. For example: lifts, stores, restaurants, etc. though it is our right, I have noticed people giving weird look or face reactions changed. Never seen or heard Hispanics facing this issue. I was told by a friend to converse among us in English in public places.

You both made very good point about the “road rage” no eye contact or trying to over take that car, suggestion is point on. I have been living in California for 32 years now and see mostly Indians not obeying basic traffic rules, which is in place to protect you life and others, for example, turning left even while traffic light is Red, it is a traffic violation but I see them take that left turn because no oncoming traffic, coming to a full stop in a Four way stop sign. One day, very early in the morning, it was still dark outside, I see this Indian female driving her car the opposite side of the exit ramp 😱

As u said my husband was here for 1.5 yrs,explored the new place,saved some money,and now he took us (me and our kids), we r here since 6months, bought a car then.. searched house in a safest zone, avoided unwanted conversation with others.. but all together USA endralum adhu namma ooru pola varuma 😅

I travelled a lot in long distance greyhound buses, trains every week to meet family. Lots of experiences in Chicago downtown streets early morning 4am. You have to be courageous but not too freek. Many people approach you unnecessarily for money, food, cigarettes etc., but keep up the smile and try to avoid arguments. Here people have mood swings often and it is not safe.

I live in New York City for over 30 years. I live in Queens and work in Manhattan. I used public transportation to go to work for 25 years. Now, I am retired. It is very convenient and faster than driving in congestion. My son went to school in Manhattan since middle school and took subways to get to school and return home on his own from the age of 11yrs until he graduated from high school.

The worst of this is all of this advice you give us true and valid. It's just sad what life constitutes in the US.

I was walking in New York time square street and getting the food from truck. A person came near to offer food for him as well. I got him food, later he followed and cornered me and threatened to give the whole money. He was not in a good state, there is no option i gave all the money and left the place.
You covered the points about safety. However do touch upon some things that are taken for granted in India but not in US. Like touching, maintaining house and surroundings, maintenance of restrooms, parks, behavior in public etc.

I never understood why we have to knock someone s door. If you r not sure of the house number please stay in your car and call make sure u stop at the right door. I do that every time if I going to a different neighborhood or if I m not sure of door number. U have to be very very careful living in US.

I would say we should not get used to eating so much sugar and fast food here. It is very tempting to eat. I feel after coming to us, i have started eating so much junk. In India i was never like this. For food we should be disciplined here.
Few other points
1 Don’t follow any car closely
2 don’t use slippers ( slip ons ) in outdoors
3 don’t go for a walk with your phone after 7 even if it’s within community
4 don’t open a door if you don’t know the person knocking
5. When you are in trips not at home arrange for someone to pick ur packages
6 no loud music in cars or outdoors
7 try to avoid talking politics
8 Don’t talk about teams and players
9 skip controversial topics and stay neutral
10 don’t use jewelry that’s visibly looking like gold
11 store your laptops in bags when a service person enters house
