Heavy Rain Wild Camping in Budget Superlight Hiking Tent. Yep, I Suck at Tension Tents | LanshanPro1

  • When I said I was hoping to get totally drenched, I meant the tent.. not me & all my stuff haha!
    Last time I used this tent in the rain, it let water in the seams because I did a bodge-job of seam-sealing it. So I re-sealed the seams and this time, they didn't let water in, yay! I did however manage to pitch it in such a rubbish way on a slope, that the rain pooled on the outside of the tent, one of the guys came off the peg and a pool of water came flooding into the tent through the mesh. Ooops 😬
    My concern is that I often have to pitch on mad terrain, half way up a mountain, on slopes and wonky ground. I don't always have an ideal flat area for a perfect pitch, and it would seem that this tent could pose a hyperthermia risk with a bad pitch
    So, I’m struggling to get on with this tent in heavy rain. I LOVE it for its lightness, compactness, as a nice lil bug-free haven in dry weather or light rain. That there’s no poles to snap in the wind & feeling light and bouncy when hiking with it. I'll continue to experiment with it over the summer, when getting wet isn’t likely to become a life-threatening situation
    Thanks so much for watching 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

    One thing that I saw you do, that a lot of people don’t know about in this modern age because of the lack of need for kerosene and/or oil lamps, is that you should never extinguish that kind of lamp by turning down the wick. There is always the possibility that the wick can run too far down the slot, and fall past the adjustment gears in the throat. If it is still an ember, you have essentially lit a gas bomb. While the lamps are running, they get extremely hot and create a lot fumes in the fuel bowl. The hot char on the wick can make those fumes hit the flash point and explode. Always turn down the adjustment until there is only a small flame, then raise the globe and blow it out leaving the end of the wick above the throat opening to cool. Please.

    Ultralight gear comes at a cost, especially if youre getting wet and not having a decent amount of sleep. If you don't get enough sleep carrying the tent will be just as arduous as carrying a heavier, double skinned tent that allows you to stay dry and comfortable for a good nights sleep.
    This is why ultralight equipment is not always a good idea even on muti day hikes. Another great video, thanks!

  • @andymytys
    @andymytys ปีที่แล้ว +217

    Three tips.
    First, before you go to bed, re-tension your guy lines - the fabric stretches after you first pitch it and you want to make sure it’s tight before you call it a night.
    Second, pitch with the trekking pole slightly longer than you need, at an angle. Should you find the tent sagging a bit in the middle of the night, just straighten the trekking pole you’re using the support your apex and the shelter will tighten up.
    Third, get better stakes. I highly recommend MSR Mini Ground Hog stakes.

    • @thewhofan8020
      @thewhofan8020 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm only on my 5th wild camp and I learnt your first tip by trial and error. I also re-tention if the tent gets wet as it tends to sag

    • @andymytys
      @andymytys ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@thewhofan8020 once a nylon tarp/tent is re-tensioned, it shouldn’t sag anymore as the material only has so much sag to give. If rain is pooling, then the pitch and tension wasn’t done right. The angle of the tension from a guy line at a corner should be 45 degrees, and 90 degrees if pulling out a wall rather than a corner. The angle of the line itself will vary, based on if you’re tying off to a tree, shrub, staking to the ground, etc.

    • @WildBeare
      @WildBeare  ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Thank you! When I first used the tent I was using the pole at 125cm, but this seemed to make the door a bit too tight so I started using it at 120cm.. maybe I should go back to 125 🤔
      Amazing tip about pitching with the pole at an angle so you can add a bit of height by straigtening it, I'll try to remember this
      Cheers, thanks for watching :) 🌿🐻

    I feel your pain.
    I ALWAYS carry a cheap 10x10 (or bigger for larger tents) plastic tarp to cover my tent and a disposable 10x10 ground sheet for under the tent. Solves almost all problems.
    Sleep is precious while camping ... a couple of pieces of plastic tarp can make all the difference.

      I took my daughter wild camping when she was 10, for 2 nights. We were backpacking and didn't do any great distance, perhaps a couple of hours. We took a 3 man tent to give us a bit more room and we took some good food which we enjoyed cooking. We've done Snowdon several times since then and we're off to backpack the Grand Canyon in Arizona next month with my other children. My only advice is do whatever it takes for her to enjoy it.

    Hi Clare, I've used single skin tents for sometime. By raising the pole height 15mm - and allowing ventilation all round the fly - gives a better pitch and water shed. Although keep an eye on the connecting net, that the water can drip away from the bath tub. Another thought to help level your mattress is your day clothes go under the mattress, it also stops it sliding around. Love what you do and the honest quality of your vids - keep going Cheers Sim

The large tarp suspended over my tent kept everything underneath it 100% dry which was wonderful but I will tell you the incessant noise of raindrops splatting down a couple feet above my head drove me batty! My experience with my Lanshan 1 is that it pitches better with the reinforced corners off the ground. Those five points should be at least a fist-width up. This helps make the bathtub floor and helps the tent ventilate better. I don’t have the Pro version because I wanted to able to ditch the inner bug net some times and go really lite, but I have a much easier time getting this to pitch when I bring extra pegs for the inner parts. Those yellow ropes that it came with just don’t seem to ever line up well with the length I need for the five adjustable straps on the outer fly. Thanks for video! I still love the music you add in.

    Always happy to see one of your videos come out. I actually went to a wild campsite last weekend. thought I'd give it a go as a starting point. absolutely loved it. pitched on the slightest of slopes, got in the tent and thought this will be fine. Spent the night constantly slipping down the tent though. Still, it's a good memory in the bank.I also struggled in my new sleeping bag, found it too restricting as I'm a wriggler . Still working on the courage side to go real wild camping alone. Looking forward to the next video. 🥃🏕

      Heyy, ahh this is great news :D I'm so glad you loved it despite sliding about all night haha! I sometimes have great nights on uneven ground as it can create a nice lil nook to lay in.. other times I keep sliding down the tent and it's annoying as hell
      Mm I can't stand mummy bags so I use a semi-mummy, sort of halfway between a rectangular shape and a mummy shape. Lets me bend my legs up etc. You could try a quilt instead, I know a few people that swear by them
      I love a wild campsite, great place to start! Take your time, you'll know when you're ready. Being outside and enjoying nature & some peace is the main thing

I changed the original aluminum tent pegs to longer aluminium tent pegs to fix the upper tent more safely in rain. This tent is great and fast to build up even is slightly raining and the ground slightly wet. Greetings from Allgäu at German Alps. Andreas

    Hi Claire, I know the feeling of getting soaked even after sealing the tent. I had a light weight tent that leaked around the seams and I sealed them but I still got soaked because the wind picked up during the night and pulled one of the steaks out and I didn't sleep any that night. I love your lantern but please don't roll the wick down just blow it out and let it cool. Have a wonderful day or night and be safe and have a wonderful time in your beautiful countryside.

      @@WildBeare Yes I do love when you're able to include astrophotography into your videos when the sky is actually clear. What camera do you use? I have a Celestron 8 SE telescope that I've been playing around with. Bought some additional equipment that connects it to a computer and motorized focuser. Looking for a good camera that can be mounted to a tripod and connect to the telescope. You do take some lovely time lapsed photography. Unfortunately where I live there's too much light saturation to see the night sky as clearly as you're able to. Thanks again Claire and have a wonderful week yourself. 😉👍🏕🌿

    Soaked stuff is why I no longer sleep on the ground. I carry a canvas tube, (which doubles as a dry bag) that sleep on. I make two stands thread two poles through the canvas, then lay them outside the pitch of the two stands. I tie off everything (6 lengths of 1 meter paracord) and I'm off the ground quite securely with the two stands rising above my sleeping area, I can string a line between the stands and secure a tarp for element protection. It's quick and easy to set up and quick take down.

    I gotta say, your cheerfulness even in regards to this sort of thing (and on one hour of sleep, no less!) is absolutely admirable!
    In fact, I got rained out of my tent a couple weeks ago and when I got home I threw the whole thing in the trash! I was so frustrated. Got my new Lightfighter 1 tent in the mail a couple days ago, so hopefully that one will serve me much better. I was not at all cheerful about getting rained out, though. Your resolve is so incredible.

    • @WildBeare
      @WildBeare  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh thanks! I found it fairly amusing when I flooded the tent, I was a bit annoyed when my bag got wet though because I was worried it might affect the loft but it seems to have dried out fine :) If this had all happened up a mountain on a longer trip though, it would have ruined the trip and I'd have had to go home, in that case I really would have wanted to chuck it in the bin 😄
      You'll see me quite frustrated in the next video, trying to put it up in constant wind up on a moor in the Peaks.. it was the most frustrating pitch I've ever done and I was starting to lose my patience as it was getting dark and starting to rain. So my resolve is not perfect by any means 😄
      Hope your new tent is kind to you, it looks great, just had a Google. Happy camping! :D 🏕🌿

    I always cocoon my tent with a tarp. I lay the tarp out, put the tent on top, wrap the rest of the tarp over and around the tent. If big enough, it can give you a little area in front of your door to keep things dry. Waterproof, warm and easy. It's a little extra weight, but then so is all that water. Good luck, great video.

    To be honest I think of give up with that tent I wanted to get one myself, but one of the main things when you're wild camping is being comfortable and dry.
    That's why I'd take the extra weight and be in a tent that keeps me dry and out of the elements.
    But good on you for doing it and putting the videos out there 👍🏻

    • @WildBeare
      @WildBeare  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh I agree, but also the weight saving makes the hiking part of my trips so much more enjoyable and its so much better for my joints (I'm hypermobile so gotta be careful with weight if possible as I get injured easily). I've used the tent in light rain on a couple trips since this video was filmed and its been totally fine, heavy rain does seem to be giving me issues though! Thanks for watching my lil video :) hope you have a great week 🌿🐻

      @@WildBeare I do love watching you're adventures. I looked at that tent myself but the one with separate inner version.
      But a friend of mine put me onto MLD Trailstar so I ordered one of those in silnylon with a mesh inner which uses trekking poles, it's less than 1kg and less still without inner but I like my comforts.
      It's really quick and easy to put up even quicker to take down and good in the wind so long as it doesn't change direction, in which case you have to do a jiggle with the pegs to move the door round.
      It's snug when you're in the inner but I don't touch the fly and there's plenty of space to store your gear and cook outside the inner 👍🏻
      Look forward to you're next adventure 👍🏻

    I had recently been watching a few vids on this tent as I’m looking for something small to suit my load or for the Helikon tex Bergen. Been falling down the bushcraft rabbit hole. I have seen a hack for this tent, they use shock cord instead of the guy line, less likely to undo itself keeping tension on those corners. Just thought you’d like to try it.

    Here’s an unsolicited tip for making a fail safe rigging, so that the tent line can’t come off the tent peg:
    1) put the tent line with the loop through the loop of the tent peg (like threading a needle)
    2) put the tent peg through the loop of the tent line
    3) place the peg in the ground with the loop of the tent line “resting” on the peg like you normally would
    Done correctly, and in the event of the tent line slipping off, the loop of the tent peg will catch the loop of the tent line forming a square knot 🪢
    I hope this makes sense

    Nice one. Guying out both flysheet and inner/floor to the same peg puts a lot of strain on it (as I've found out to my own cost in the past!). Especially on a soft forest floor the peg is likely to shift and loosen the guylines. I'd suggest using separate pegs all round the flysheet, which also gives you more flexibility getting the tension of it just right. More weight, but worth it IMO.
