Primitive Technology: Tiled Roof Hut

  • I built this tiled roof hut in the bush using only primitive tools and materials. The tools I used have been made in my previous videos. It should be pointed out that I do not live in the wild and that this is just a hobby. It should be obvious to most that this is not a survival shelter but an experiment in primitive building technology.
    To cut and carve wood I used the celt stone axe and stone chisel made in this video. To carry water and make fire I used pots and fire sticks made in this video. Finally, to store fire wood and dry, unfired tiles, I used the wood shed built in this video.
    The wooden frame was built with a 2X2m floor plan and a 2m tall ridge line with 1m tall side walls. 6 posts were put into the ground 0.25 m deep. The 3 horizontal roof beams were attached to these using mortise and tenon joints carved with a stone chisel. The rest of the frame was lashed together with lawyer cane strips. The frame swayed a little when pushed so later triangular bracing was added to stop this. Also when the mud wall was built, it enveloped the posts and stopped them moving altogether.
    A small kiln was built of mud from the ground and a perforated floor of clay from the creek bank. It was only 25 cm internal diameter and 50 cm tall. Clay was dug, broken tiles (from previous batches) were crushed and added to it as grog and it was mixed thoroughly.This clay was pressed into rectangular moulds made from strips of lawyer cane to form tiles. Wood ash prevented the clay sticking to the stone. 20 tiles were fired at a time. 450 flat tiles and 15 curved ridge tiles were made with only a few breakages. 26 firings were done in all and the average firing took about 4 hours. The fired tiles were then hooked over the horizontal roof battens.
    An underfloor heating system was built into one side of the hut to act as a sitting/sleeping platform in cold weather. This was inspired by the Korean Ondol or “hot stone”. A trench was dug and covered with flat stones with a firebox at one end and a chimney at the other for draft. The flames travelled beneath the floor heating it. After firing it for a while the stones stay warm all night with heat conducted directly to the sleeping occupant and radiating into the room.
    The wall was made of clayey mud and stone. A stone footing was laid down and over this a wall of mud was built. To save on mud, stones were included into later wall courses. The mud was dug from a pit in front of the hut and left a large hole with a volume of about 2.5 cubic metres.
    The finished hut has a swinging door made of sticks. The inside is dark so I made a torch from tree resin. A broken tile with resin on it acts as a small lamp producing a lot of light and little smoke. The end product was a solid little hut, that should be fire and rot resistant. The whole project took 102 days but would have taken 66 days were it not for unseasonal rain. For a more in depth description see my blog (primitivetechnology.wordpress....

    Unlike most other channels out there that are clearly fake and leave their destruction behind as a potentially very big hazard that would take a long time to heal, this guy on the other hand gets straight to the point and doesn’t try to accomplish wildly unrealistic feats that are simply untrue, like making swimming pools. (Even the ancient Greeks knew that you had to filter water constantly, lest it turning into something foul really quick, especially in the heat) Just simple materials used in nature like wood, sticks, sand, clay, mud, rocks, fire, and anything in between. He doesn’t always keep uploading every other week either, meaning that this clearly takes a lot of time.
    He might not live in the wild, but at least he’s honest and that his methods are real. It shows some real ways of how humans could’ve survived thousands of years ago. And this guy is pretty much doing it by himself, in around 60-100 days! (Although I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some occasional help sometimes) *Mad respect.*

Which means that the rest of the reenforced part is warm but not hot as its not directly above a fire and its reenforced. Second example 13:05, hes showing us what hes grabbing and explaining how he got the fire on the stick so easily incase people ask in comment section. 2 examples, shows that he talks. he has his own special way of communication and thats what makes him better then the rest. He doesnt carry on talking non-stop to keep us entertained. He probs doesnt talk because his subscribers arent there to hear someone talking on and on, theyre here to see someone build shit.

    I watched a documentary on a an African tribe making clay pots. They use lots of straw in the clay so when it fires the straw burns off leaving small air pockets. This allows the clay to expand and contract in changing temperatures, which increases strength.
    Oh and they also make sure the clay is incredibly dry (2 weeks?) before they fire to avoid cracking.
    Just thought I would share.

    Best video on youtube... No annoying voice-overs, cringeworthy intro graphics and music. Everything is explained in realtime very clearly and the end result is amazing. Very impressed with your range of skills and your determination my friend !!
    From an environmental perspective this build is perfect. I replied to a comment in this thread from somebody who thought that modern technology is somehow better. I'm going to copy and paste a section of it here to exp0lain why this is such a phenomenal build
    This was built by hand with no need for generators, plant or transport so little or no carbon footprint
    It was built without any power tools so it is low cost and requires no manufactured products
    Everything was sourced and manufactured on site so low impact and low carbon miles
    There was no waste to be transported or disposed of after the build was completed
    There are no toxic chemicals in the build
    It can be easily maintained with mud, straw and a few stones, so no expensive repairs or maintenance
    The dense wall is thermally efficient keeping the interior at a constant temperature so no need for unhealthy central heating or kerosene stoves
    The tiles are fired to become waterproof without any need of coatings, paints polymers or synthetics
    The site is bio-degradable leaving zero environmental impact
    It is scalable and flexible requiring no expensive foundations or expensive architects
    It is very quick. Even modest homes these days are not erected in 102 days
    Due to its relatively low mass and even weight distribution it is unlikely to suffer subsidence
    It is waterproof and will withstand most low grade earthquakes
    It is FREE !!!

      @stixxnstones6930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      While I agree with your comment He's demonstrating perfect equilibrium with the environment, giving insight to possibilities of ancient human existence. The reality is, can you imagine 7.5 BILLION human beings flooding the environment like that? Forests would be laid waste, not to mention our own waste degrading the environment with disease. The carbon footprint and soot from all those fires from building and surviving,, At least 2 billion fires burning every night would blacken the skies. Air would become unbreathable. See the cities of the Victorian Era, estimated to be just over a billion at the time. Can you imagine 7 times that amount of sustained pollution, possibly more? Of course over time our vast numbers would diminish but not before utter devastation of our planet.
      The modern power grid is what keeps the sea of humanity at bay. Cities are like power grid dams keeping vast lakes of humanity from flooding the environment. Our numbers are too great and waaaaay to late in the game to revert back living like that. Unless you want to eliminate 6-1/2 billion people, then we can live in such a way...but who makes that call??
      If you want to praise a true environmentalist, praise someone that is single and sterilized or a couple that chooses not to reproduce. They are the true heroes of our environment. Sorry don't mean to be preachy...just my two cents! :-)

    • @TheComputec
      @TheComputec 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I'm certainly not going to preach about who should be culled in a population purge but it is clear we have overpopulated the planet. Humans are incredibly toxic to the planet in our current lifestyles and ideas. There is no harmony between humans and the environment or humans and the animal population.... but there was once
      All that changed was greed and curiosity. The big-bang was the industrial revolution...Quite possibly the worst thing ever done to this planet
      The only rebuttal I would offer is that modern "mega production" involves CO2 Emissions MUCH MUCH higher than your claims. I guarantee you that modern life produces more smoke in the generation of energy from power stations, the emissions from foundries, oil platforms and deforestation than two billion twig fires, simply because this method involves maintaining a carbon balance
      We have spent the last 300 years digging up anything that burns and... burning it
      We have polluted the seas so they cannot sequester CO2 as effectively as they did and could do ,
      We have chopped down 40% of the worlds ancient forest trees that re-balance the atmospheres gas ratios
      We have employed intensive mono-culture methods of farming which is killing the soil and its ability to ward off plant diseases.
      Jet engines, chemical manufacture, the motor car, methane from cows, domestic oil and gas for heating...industrial waste and water contamination, oil spills etc etc humans are the worst thing to ever happen to this planet
      You clearly care about, and think about the planet too, and I don't claim any superiority in my thinking, but I cannot criticize somebody who is demonstrating an empathy with the planet and a desire to simplify his life removing all of the superfluous crap we seem addicted to
      I'm going to give some more thought to the points you made about the power grid keeping the humans in a zone... it makes some sense but it's hardly a plan for the future... well at least I hope not
      I will take this guy's connection with the planet over Monsanto's any day of the week

    • @iTomato
      @iTomato 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True

    • @stixxnstones6930
      @stixxnstones6930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Oh yes, no doubt greed is the underlying factor to the current status of our world. Corporate farming will be the end of responsible agriculture, profit before substance.
      The power grid cities are just a band aid to the environmental problems we face today. This planet receives 8 Mega Quadrawatts of power each year from our star. The human race consumes, at this point, 400 Quadrawatts a year. With more third world countries coming on line. The point, we use a tiny fraction of the available power coming into our planet from our star. Instead we use fossil fuels to generate electricity. Even if the race grows to 12 billion we wouldn't use more than 1000 Quadrawatts of power, still a tiny fraction of what is available.
      We can never eliminate human greed. Activists need to think like profiteers and allow them to make huge sums off alternative technology and models. I don't care for the greed but it is a cold hard fact of reality, we can never eliminate it, not in our lifetime.
      Let's keep the sea of humanity locked up behind the walls of power, convenience, and status. Right now it's the only saving grace for our world. Once good people accept those harsh realities we can then strategize how to deal with it and move in the right direction.

    Just came here from SunnyV2s video. I remember my dad showing me this channel when I was younger, but I wasnt too interested. But after watching Sunnys video on the fake primitive channels, I came over to take a look at ur content. Its actually quite peaceful, I think I can play this while doing sone crafts and stuff.

  • @turtlemun
    @turtlemun ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That heated bed was genius! Incredible, and clearly not faked like most of the other primitive-themed channels out there. You get to see the ENTIRE process, start to finish, including resource collection and placing. Sped up here and there with a cut or two, but that's acceptable for a video like this. You don't see huge, dramatic changes in the build after a cut here like in other channels.
