Btw - For anyone at home: You don't want to touch the burnt shells with your bare hands as they will react chemically with the moisture and the protective oils on your hands. Lime is a strong base (alkaline) called Calcium hydroxide which is similar to drain cleaner pellets in strength
After watching your videos, I tried to build a furnace in the Appalachian mountains where I frequently camp for two weeks at a time. As you can imagine, there are plenty of woods, and the terrain contains many sizable stones, but even with river access there is little mud or clay. If at all, it is tightly bound between the roots of trees. The main materials there are rock, sand, gravel, wood and water. Thus, i modified the design to a stone furnace with the sparse amount of clay-rich mud as mortar. Got pretty hot, but not quite hot enough to fire the little bit of clay I found. I would definitely try again next spring

As someone who doesn't have access to limestone, this video is perfect for me! Thanks for the demonstration! Edit: after reading through your video description, I must admit that your scientific method is outstanding! I'm glad to see that you put a lot of effort into your projects.
"Making lime from snail shells" was new knowledge for me. Thank you. The mortar you made is in Turkey; It is called "Horasan Mortar" or "Roman Mortar". It has various formulas and egg white can also be mixed into it. This mortar has been used in archaeological structures for thousands of years and is a stronger type of mortar than concrete. Over the years it gets harder and becomes just like a rock. However, although it is hard, its biggest feature is that it absorbs the impacts that occur during earthquakes.
That last part is not entirely true. Lime mortar is not stronger or harder than Portland cement, and isn't shock absorbing. That being said, lime cement is kinda self healing, since when water fills cracks, lime dissolves kinda like what is seen in the video and "repairs" the cracks. It's still pretty cool tho
@@juanchetumare Its not the lime that does that. In roman concrete and mortar it is volcanic ash and salt that has this chemical reaction that grows new crystals when it gets wet. There is lime in normal cement aswell. If volcanic ash wasn't the limiting factor worldwide we would all build with roman concrete still. But we don't have it everywhere so that old roman formula is not as good without it for the masses we use it for.

interesting, so he only used the shells for their calcium carbonate. meaning if he manages to find marble or some actual limestone, this is much easier to produce?
Maybe. But the difficulty is that dolomite or chalk in such a furnace is very difficult to calcinnte, large pieces inside are not calcinnate, and small ones are hard to find in the ashes. Shells of shellfish are thin, easily calcinnate and simply extracted from the ashes.
Honestly I'm just waiting for all the stages, bronze age, iron age, industrial revolution, technological revolution and finally he will surpass modern science
good one :) But on a serious note, I was thinking about this, and if you think about coast dwellers, they would have piles and piles of shells to use: either found on the beach or as middens from all the shellfish they ate. You can almost visualise how they must have stumbled on the technology, after having chucked a bunch in the fire after a meal and then coming back after the rain to find no trace of the shells left.
What an epic video! The early Australian settlers, or invaders, or prisoners, (depending upon whom you talk to) used clam shells in a similar manner to create alot of the first structures that were built. **reads description** This dude might be into "primitive" technology but his English skills and knowledge are anything but. Well researched, well executed, well described. I am, yet again, very impressed. To think, this guy used to mow lawns for a living. Crazy.
His English skills? He made several errors I noticed in the captions. The one I recall atm was using subsequent when he meant previous. I mean I think the guy is amazing but when you're wrong, you're wrong.
@Mijochda I like how you edited your own sentence. You couldn't even get through a short statement without fucking up. What is Grammatically 100% correct and what is widely acceptable are two different things, I dont remember the statement of PERFECT ENGLISH NO ERRORS being made. "well described" and praise for modern English standards being met where both used. Maybe you might want to actually read what people say instead of nitpicking. When You're a fuckwit, You're a fuckwit (PS. i dont care about my grammar either to be honest because i know that's going to be your only retort if you even had anything half decent to say)
Mark Fryer there are several articles about him at various news outlets. There's very limited personal information about him but we know for sure that his name is John Plant, he's in hid mid-30's, he lives in Queensland, Australia and he used to mow lawns for a living but does TH-cam full time now because he makes more money that way.

Me and a friend really like this stuff, I’ve made my own spear, still unfinished, out of a stick, with a pointed tip. He has a stick&string bow with stick arrows, and we are making a small stick hut for carving tools and water gathering. You are very lucky to live where you are, as we don’t have access to some stuff you do. Just want to say you are flippin awesome and I absolutely love this. P.S. we both are still kids (11 years old) lol
Might i suggest to put the pointed end into a fire. Not to set it on fire, just to char it and then remove thr charred bits by rubbing it on a rock. Its called fire hardened wood
Bit older now, but if you still enjoy this you might also try to find ways to do what Primitive Tech does using resources you have available in your area. Happy hunting!
I'm always amazed by how well he lights up a fire. This is actually very impressive work. I doubt most people can light a fire with a stick, even if we gave them over an hour.
I've tried it, and it's incredible how much harder it is than it looks lol. I ended up with jelly arms and out of breath and had nothing to show for it except some wood dust and a slight burning smell.
The magic is in the notch you cut in the fireboard. This collects the hot dust together and then smolders. You blow air over it to get it to glow into an ember and then gently drop the ember into a very dry tinder bundle where it can be nursed into a flame.
@@kittywampusdrums4963 Yes, but I've seen a guy who actually tried that method only struggle to light a fire for over 8 hours. The guy was new in survival, and he was trying his on a beach. But still it conveys how much knowledge and exp you need. This is why even hobbist survivalists normally carry around flint.
Yeah when I did this a few years ago we used egg shells and shellfish shells both work pretty well just as long as you wash the shellfish shells first to get rid of the salt
@@nievillis Maybe they tried to use it like a stone to make a fire place or they tried to burn it. After they were done they poured some water on the fire so that they wouldn't burn the whole place down and after a few days they realised a hard layer of white stuff on the ground.

Well, the better question is: could you live without it? that "rock" is called cement. you know, the stuff that ancient greek and the roman empire was build with. throw in sand and you get plaster, mix it with rocks and you get concrete, . swap the lime with bitumen and you get asphalt concrete. this technique enabled us to build roads, highways, monuments and cities. sure wouldnt hurt kids to know about this "rock", would it?

Yeah not to be mean but I'm getting sick of those cambodian channels putting "primitive technology" in their title on videos that often have nothing to do with primitive techniques, completely lacking any educational/informative comments if not being frauds ("LMAO we found aluminium nuggets on the ground in the forest and now we're going to cast a sword out of it")
Dylan Teno Yes and no. The process is the same, but the bone density means you need to take a number of additional steps. Most notably, you'd want to splinter them by crushing if possible and bake them for far longer; you'd also want a proper kiln because bones powder once you've baked the calcium out and they'd get hopelessly mixed with the ash. In the end it wouldn't be worth it and you'd be better served just turning those bones into an effigy or ritual fetish like a normal person.
@The ChromosomeKid Listen here you poorly packaged bag of horse shit with no lessons on how to be social whatsoever. People are allowed to think whatever they want on something. Don't try to control what other people think just because you disagree.
@The ChromosomeKid And you're annoyingly close minded for shutting off an entire genre of entertainment behind a derivative term meant to insult people for enjoying it.
I wonder if the aboriginals knew that thousands of years into the future, I would be watching a modern man do primitive work while I sit on my couch eating tacos.
Primitive Technology Are you allowed to collect animal bones you find? I know there are some protections in the area you're in, but don't know exactly what you're allowed to do.
Oyster shells are a historical source of mass amounts of lime, and they also make good aggregate for your final concrete. Collect a couple hundred pounds and go to town.
You didn't. Bones are mostly calcium phosphate salts ( hydroxyapatite, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxylapatite), with little carbonate. They cannot be converted to quicklime by heating. Details en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_mineral. Hope your fingers are OK, lime can dissolve your skin off!
Some old folks back here in Sarawak still take lime putty with betel vine leaves. I guss this must had been a good way to get calcium in the old days. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.
you can make soap out of vegetable oil, but i don't know if there are some oil rich plants in this region (like coco nut, olive, almonds, stuff like these)
Very well done once again, Sir. All your videos are definitely my favorite ones in this genre. Thanks for sharing. All the best luck and health to you for now and future.
Well there's still primitive ppl in the amazon and Indian ocean, and they won't have to piece things together like we did likely because we keep so many records
Because he can build with lesser materials that take far too long to work with? Oh yeah definitely him, he would be the one to survive. ( That is sarcasm)
If someone can effectively use a hammer that doesn't necessarily mean they can effectively use a nail gun. Going by the logic that because he can do basic things with basic materials means he can effectively use modern tools is stupid. And to Andy Ashes, building bullets without the proper machinery is incredibly difficult and since bullets are something you need in large quantities, i don't see how this person could excel at making bullets in any way.

He hasn't developed basic communication skills yet. Right now he may be able to offer a few grunts to indicate intention or to alert someone to the presence of a predator, but since he is so isolated he cannot develop a meaningful language of his own.
As always your videos and explanations are fascinating, useful, and simply state the facts without talking down. Your videos are extremely soothing and I love to watch them when I'm feeling anxious. The steady work, lack of dialogue, comprehensive captions and nature sounds are surprisingly calming. Thank you for doing what you do.
Has he hit the stone age now?

**reads description** This dude might be into "primitive" technology but his English skills and knowledge are anything but. Well researched, well executed, well described. I am, yet again, very impressed. To think, this guy used to mow lawns for a living. Crazy.
ProgHead777 Where did you learn about the mowing lawns for a living bit?
His English skills? He made several errors I noticed in the captions. The one I recall atm was using subsequent when he meant previous. I mean I think the guy is amazing but when you're wrong, you're wrong.
ProgHead777
@Mijochda
I like how you edited your own sentence.
When You're a fuckwit, You're a fuckwit
(PS. i dont care about my grammar either to be honest because i know that's going to be your only retort if you even had anything half decent to say)
That's the reason why Gary didn't come home

Ian Thomas nah the vids wouldn’t be as special if he posted more often

I hope y’all keep it up! And don’t throw anything away, it’s great for the memories!
He’s the most entertaining youtuber ever
Bit older now, but if you still enjoy this you might also try to find ways to do what Primitive Tech does using resources you have available in your area. Happy hunting!
I swear this is one of the best channels ever on TH-cam. Beautiful content
@@kittywampusdrums4963
Yes, but I've seen a guy who actually tried that method only struggle to light a fire for over 8 hours. The guy was new in survival, and he was trying his on a beach. But still it conveys how much knowledge and exp you need.
This is why even hobbist survivalists normally carry around flint.

I got a slightly warmer wood with black marks on it. So good job, you did better than me lol
@@one_victory6145 Those ferocerium rods work good too. Yea if you dont use your hand and make a bowdrill it's a bit easier with the sticks.

I had no idea you can make it out of snail shells. I learned some new things from these videos
snail shells are a high percentage calcium carbonate. Kinda like egg shells too.
Shells are calcium carbonate... u can use egg shells too...
Yeah when I did this a few years ago we used egg shells and shellfish shells both work pretty well just as long as you wash the shellfish shells first to get rid of the salt
You can use corals.
ShadowWhelp bones should work too
Love this channel. I can't wait for the video where he shows how he built the camera he is using.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Well, he's finally done it. I personally give it a couple years before he starts making castles and Cathedrals.
That's a lot of snails though
he better get escargo-ing

@@nievillis Maybe they tried to use it like a stone to make a fire place or they tried to burn it. After they were done they poured some water on the fire so that they wouldn't burn the whole place down and after a few days they realised a hard layer of white stuff on the ground.

I work in a primary school and have shown it to the kids, they love it, but all think its Minecraft... lol
I showed his videos in my secondary school history class for talking about the stone and bronze age.
Why? Do we need that rock?
Rahul Sagar I hope so coz I'm still in school
Well, the better question is: could you live without it?
that "rock" is called cement. you know, the stuff that ancient greek and the roman empire was build with.
throw in sand and you get plaster, mix it with rocks and you get concrete, . swap the lime with bitumen and you get asphalt concrete.
this technique enabled us to build roads, highways, monuments and cities. sure wouldnt hurt kids to know about this "rock", would it?
omg years after watching these videos and some times guessing what was going on i finally turned on cc and realised this dude it's even more of a genius then previously thought now i have to rewatch them all with cc and post this comment for all to see

THE TRUE PRIMITIVE TECHNOLOGY
The other ones are good but just don't reach this man's level of interest, wish this channel posted more often
Yeah not to be mean but I'm getting sick of those cambodian channels putting "primitive technology" in their title on videos that often have nothing to do with primitive techniques, completely lacking any educational/informative comments if not being frauds ("LMAO we found aluminium nuggets on the ground in the forest and now we're going to cast a sword out of it")
Gauthier Schwebel yup. Especially everyone is trying to make some quick bucks off youtube nowadays. I don’t blame them.
the other ones uses chemical formules and mediaval+ tecnology to create primitive tecnology, they are poop
But can you do this with human bones?
I'm asking for a friend.
Dylan Teno I would also like to know this, for me not a friend
Wild humans aren't as populous as they once were, try your luck with fish or rodent bones.
Dylan Teno
Yes and no.
Daniel Gehring WOOHOO i love me some rituals and effigy making!
Daniel Gehring
How do you know this?

Does this process also work with sea shells like clam or oyster? I live in an area where these shells are very easy to collect in large amounts...
It also works with just straight limestone if I’m not mistaken, cuz that’s pretty much the only rock we have where I live

Have you ever considered developing organic products, such as soap? That would be a very interesting video
Guess he'd need to kill an animal, idk if he'd do that
I remember that there are strict laws about hunting
Noe Weschler let me guess hunting with a spear or a bow isn't allowed? xD
you can make soap out of vegetable oil, but i don't know if there are some oil rich plants in this region (like coco nut, olive, almonds, stuff like these)
Organic soap = animal fat

This guy would be the man to survive a zombie apocalypse
Because he can build with lesser materials that take far too long to work with? Oh yeah definitely him, he would be the one to survive. ( That is sarcasm)
Not until he build guns and bullets
If someone can effectively use a hammer that doesn't necessarily mean they can effectively use a nail gun. Going by the logic that because he can do basic things with basic materials means he can effectively use modern tools is stupid. And to Andy Ashes, building bullets without the proper machinery is incredibly difficult and since bullets are something you need in large quantities, i don't see how this person could excel at making bullets in any way.
Jane Kim He will go into wilderness and survive there, zombies are pretty clumsy, so they cant get to him.
