Primitive Technology: Cord drill and Pump drill

- I made a cord drill and then upgraded it to a pump drill. A cord drill is basically a spindle with a fly wheel attached so it looks like a spinning top. the middle of a piece of cord is then put into a notch at the top of the spindle. The ends of the cord are then wrapped around the spindle and then pulled quickly outwards causing the drill to spin. The momentum of the fly wheel causes the cord to wrap back around the spindle in the other direction. When it stops the cords are pulled outwards again and the drill spins in the other direction.
I made the first one with a stone flywheel then made fire with it in the same way I make fire with fire sticks. Then I made and fired some clay fly wheels, made another drill with one of the fly wheels and fitted a stone drill bit to the end. This one I use for drilling holes in wood.
I used the new drill to make a hole in a piece of wood. I then put the spindle of the original cord drill through the hole in the wood, tied the ends of the cord onto the piece of wood and it became a pump drill. The cords were wrapped round the spindle as normal but now a pumping action of the wooden cross bar created the same action.
This was an interesting project. For fire making I'd stick to fire sticks because the equipment is easier to make. But for people with soft hands they could use the cord drill as it won't give them blisters. It should be added that the pump drill actually took longer than the cord drill (cord: 32 seconds, pump 1 min 30 seconds -the pump drill scene was edited down to make it watchable). The pump drill had more moving parts and was constantly having problems. As a fire making method I'd choose the cord drill over the pump drill unless all the parts were well made.
The main purpose I'd use these tool for is drilling holes rather than fire making. It was reasonably good but the stone bits I made could be improved and their attachment to the shaft also needs some thought. If the bit loosens and gets off axis slightly the whole thing wobbles.
These drills are impressive inventions and show potential for carpentry use later on.

I had a "wilderness survival" class I took in college, and I'm now seeing why no one could get the cord drills to work and the instructors even brought lighters along to use instead- there was no fly wheel! We had to work in teams of two just to get the spindle to not fly out of the notch, and even then it was hard to keep it from doing that. My soft hands thank you for this video.

Made a bow drill fire many years ago when I was younger when a friend and I were trying to learn wilderness survival. Took me more tries than I can count. Picking the right woods to use for the spindle and the base to make a proper fire ash to keeping the bow straight. Starting a fire using friction might look easy, but I can assure you, it's not.
This fella has obviously practised this many times before the video was made. And I give him the credit he deserves. Not everyone would put this much effort into doing something like this. Great video! 👍
What I love about this channel is that it shows ancient people were not "primitive" in the sense of stupid. They were extremely intelligent, and made the best use of what was available to them at the time. People speak of cavemen as if they were different from us, but 10,000 years is not even a blink of an evolutionary eye. They were exactly the same as us. Respect to the maker of this video for showing how it may have looked to survive in a world before modern conveniences.

For an example, take a normal man and put it in this conditions of life, i can tell you, he will not survive more than a year(in best scenario). Ancient or primitive man was, indeed, smarter than today's average person, because most of the people back then died pretty often. Only the strongest, smartest and the fittest survived long enough. But today we have an incredible collective society, with tons and tons of written experience, so that each new generation could focus on improving society it self, while skipping such extremes as hunting or fire making ;)
Back then people died exactly as often as they do today: Once per life. ;)
But yeah, if your very life is on the line you HAVE to use every brain cell you have to survive. Those who didn't simply died out...

This is real survival skills, not like those fancy "survivors" with their $250 survival carbon knifes stuffed with matches and fishing stuff.
Even starting with stuff like machetes and fishing rods, being able to survive on your own, especially in this day and age, is really admirable.

However, starting from scratch is always the hardest and the one to warrant the most praise. You shouldn't even need tools to survive if you're trained. The most I could see someone needing things like an axe or a machete in a survival situatuon is if they are an average Joe.

I remembered my father when I was young,one time he was fixing his truck, but the electricity went off while he's using the drill.. We were all laughing at him bcos he got some ropes, a sort of round thing that looked like a gear but not, the nailbox, and his pool stick, and he made a drill that looked similar to this one.. He just smirked at us when he finished drilling the metal and just kept on his work..! So every time he says watch and learn, I keep my mouth shut and expect to be schooled by his work tricks..hehe

I mean, I knows roughly how it works, as in "there's a graphic chip in it and a small hard drive and all that", and I even know they contain loads of Gold and rare minerals, but do I have only the slightest clue how that works? Hell no.
Do I know how to smelt iron? Yes. Do I know what kind of carbon it takes to create steel? Hell no. Or could I even distinguish iron ore? Maybe, just maybe.
If you give me 200 years, I might be able to reverse engineer an engine from the diffuse image of it I have in my mind, but could I dig up oil and correctly process it? No fucking way
