- Steeleye Span performing 'Thomas The Rhymer', from the DVD 'Wintersmith Live'. Available to buy from the Park shop here: parkrecords.com/product/steele...
You can stream and download the album Wintersmith Deluxe Edition on platforms such as Spotify and Apple here: orcd.co/wintersmithdeluxeedition
For any artist to discover new inspiration after many years is a huge challenge yet this is just what Steeleye Span achieved with Wintersmith, the 22nd studio album in a remarkable career. Born from their friendship with author Terry Pratchett, their musical interpretation of his novel provided them with a gateway to a magical world, allowing the band to explore familiar themes in the company of a new set of characters - all of whom allow Steeleye to delve into the darker side of their music.
Received warmly by both critics and audience - Wintersmith saw Steeleye return to the UK album charts - the resulting concert tour was a celebration of both the past and the present. With violinist Peter Knight making his farewell, these live shows marked a major chapter in the band’s history. Filmed in Salisbury, the Wintersmith DVD captures all the magic - especially fitting as Pratchett was in the audience and joined them on stage. This is the perfect record of a special meeting of minds.

I’m 65 and we used to listen to this along with Renaissance. Beautiful lady voices
Maddy Prior and Annie Haslom
Maddy and Annie are the best female vocalists ever. But also, because the bands were so good too...
Please support the positive comments below . Those of us who love this music and who are not of the 'Thumbs up' generation are being LAZY ! Come on you old buggers - I know you are watching ! Show your appreciation before you pop your bloody clogs !!!
I have seen Steeleye Span several times! I live close to where Thomas the Ryhmer lived near Earlstone in the Scottish Borders and have even sat on his memorial stone but never heard this song till tonight! There is a mural of his exploits in the Borders General Hospital and I was sat next to it last week!! How cool is that!
Whattttt.???????? Awesome.!!!!
I am 64, listening this wonderful music from 1972. I love it.
84 here
been listening to Steeleye Span for 50 years@@phyllispetras3369
How could modern music compete with these ones...!
No one has the range and purity of voice thar Maddy Prior has. Fell in love with this band in 79. Still love the sound.
I love how Maddy's voice has gotten richer over the years.
❤❤❤❤❤
What I call a very good surprise.
Nobody did the traditional/folk hybrid with electric instruments better than the English groups. They never grow old.
Yeah what is missing is the humph and the tales of tradegy and epic and the songs and rhymes and stories. All the other folk stuff is almost like AI slop. Generic and soulless
This band is awesome and Maddie's voice has stood the test of time where so many have not.
This is what "folk rock" really means.
Well, Jethro Tull!
@@dupont135 Sometimes. There is also a good dose of prog in most of their songs, and there is nothing at all of folk in Aqualung or Locomotive Breath.
To Mr S. COWEL
This is what real talent sounds like . Not the crap you turn out !!
simon cowel is a first grade plonker who wouldnt know good music if it slapped him across his pathetic plastic face!
Spent the summer of 1981 on the road with these guys (support act) and had an absolute ball. Great people, great music -and a great era. Never forget.
What a joy that must've been!
Must have been an awesome summer.!!!!
I love how the music makes you think it’s medieval or Renaissance, but they add their rich, unique harmony and sprinkle syncopation through it and it’s Modern Steeleye.
Don't know how she kept her voice so pure for all these years!
Amazing, but that's Maddie - gift from God.
Better and better
THAT IS MOST EXCELLENT
Peter Knight's vocal performance is magnificent. Sweet and gentle and a perfect counterpoint to Maddy Prior. The quality of musicianship is phenomenal. A masterclass.
Brilliant
Loved their sound classic folk .
I just love Steeleye Span's delicate musical style.......
Saw them live in 1972 as the warm up for Procol Harum. The experience has stayed with me ever since. They sound absolutely wonderful in this performance! Maddy is nothing short of amazing. So glad to find this!
Bringt die positiven Gefühle
aus Kindheit und Jugend wie-
der zum Vorschein.
Miss Steeleye Span. Just brilliant.
pure gold
TIMELESS. i AM 59 AND THEY JUST HAVEN LOST ANYTHING. A FINE WINE
Bloody fantastic.
Great drummer.
Brilliant as ever. Been a fan since 1974. Love Maddie and her unique voice!
Mighty band.
I had the pleasure of seeing Steeleye in Oxford, summer of 1977. Martin Carthy was in the band back then. Maddy”s vocals and Peter’s fiddle are timeless. R.I.P Pete Zorn, a great musician and a true class act.
I love you Maddy!
Blessed Be!
That was a joy to listen to maddy wow x
I saw Steeleye Span in Ottawa, Canada. Maddy was stunning, When they did Cam Yae Oer Frae France, I was ecstatic.
Pure magic still..Maddy!!!
This is one band that the world that needs to recognize for their body of work. Pioneers in Celtic rock.
They are going to be recognized by Iowa Pagan News and Ritual Arts Radio based in Berkeley CA
It's not Celtic.
"Traditional. Arranged by Steeleye Span".
This is a wonderful disvovery for me. There is beauty and magic here.
@@JohnyG29 "Celtic" is a broad stroke that bleeds into the other broad stroke of "British".
“Dolly the Rhymer”, as a simile. Saw this band live in ‘75. They opened for Tull. What a good time.
I was stationed in Wales in the middle '70's and they had a BBC TV show where they performed in a different castle each week. Never missed it, bought all their albums. Maddy was right there with Grace and Janis in my book.
Have seen Thomas the rhymer's house sadly a ruin now (A 68 at Earlston)but there is a memorial stone situated at the foot of the Eildon hills near Melrose on the Borders Abbey's Way, a beautiful area to visit.
What a joy it is to watch and hear a master at work - so in command of her material and of her audience. When she throws her head back and lets rip with Thomas the RHYmer it's just goosebumps
agreed.............I feel the same :)
A flashback to the past! Back when I had two small children and lived in a ruined mansion on the coast of Maine.
Sounds rather romantic! The stuff of horror films......
Best. Band. Ever.
Goosebumps.
I am fan since they start making music in the early 70th
Still rockin' in the free world. Love it!
Brilliant still after all these years.
I have just bought tickets for their tour next year. So freaking excited!
I love it. One of the best bands ever.
LOVE THIS SONG FROM STEELEYE SPAN GREAT BAND.
Classic traditional british folk, What could be better than Maddy and the band playing the traditional style? That's what I appresseciate, that's Britain.
But god they are old... Some guy missing!?
A guy called Gary introduced me to steely span back in the 94 v such a awesome folk band !!/ I'm now 43/ still love this band !!
I discovered them while living in Norway some forty-odd years ago. Couldn't get enough of their music.
They still sound wonderful It warms you and it moves me Cheers
dropped in by accident, enjoying old habit to listen to this my classic once again....always the same pleasure...
they do magical stuff , the bunch of them
This reminds me of my dad. He was a storyteller and 'Thomas the Rhymer' was one of his favourite fairy tales. Unfortunately, he passed away last year. 😭
less rollickin' than earlier performances ( naturally ), but probably closer to the true manner this folk song was performed for centuries, often a capella
Awesome! I hope many more hear this. I grew up just ower the hills fae where Thomas left on his wee adventure. Funny, I'd never heard of the tune til now
Saw them 46 years ago the first time, on the Now We Are Six tour!
She still has it...
Voices perhaps a little less forceful, but still very good listening! What a wonderful band! And so gratifying that they were friends with my beloved Terry Pratchett!
That fact just gave me a bit of a lift Heather 👍😀
She came to his house and sang this to him near the end.
Yeah the studio version is next level, although this is still a great version, the studio version is unbelievably powerful.
I used to work with Terry and never knew that. It would have been yet another topic to chat about.
I was there when Maddy sang this to Terry. It was very moving, and I shall never forget it. I had the honour and privilege to be one of a team caring for Sir Terry; a blend of wonderful but sad memories.
Simply stunning...
Takes me back to college days when we had open minds to anything. Someone brought this music and it taught me my own lost history.
THIS is truly my favorite song by this band ............. (King Henry is NOT amused ................ my FIRST song that introduced me to this band.)
So odd to grow old with these guys and watch all the videos from beginning to present ..............
I first heard their music when I was in high school in Rochester, NY courtesy of WCMF - FM Radio...............
In later years I joined the USAF and was stationed in England.
While there, I got to see Jethro Tull, The Albion Band, The Eagles at Wembly and Steeleye Span with Gay Woods as the main female singer................
BEING A ROCK AND ROLLER ........... I knew I liked Steeleye....... but over time I had forgotten why.
That night with Gay Woods singing ...... I remembered WHY. ( It was Maddie's voice that got me there in the first place).
That night they sang Thomas The Rhymer ...... in the first few notes I REMEMBERED what I had forgot.
Thanks guys for making my musical life RICHER.
Wonderful! Peter Knight makes the violin speak!
He has rather a nice voice, too.
One of the best ever she's a peach what a wonderful women
Has me reaching for my vinyl album, great track, Seven Hundred Elves, Magician all great story tunes.
Wonderful. I saw them at the Royal Albert Hall in 1974 supported by Gryphon.
The best version EVER!
I was blessed to see this line-up at the Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury. A great gig where all the musicians excelled. Maddy did a meet and greet signing session for the new album. I thanked her for the Christmas gig in 1976 in which they showered the audience with that night’s box office takings. In fact I collected £5, twice what I paid for the ticket.
I was also there,fantastic night.
Just wonderful Maddy- as always
Peter Zorn RIP.
Peter Knight and Rick Kemp have retired....
Fookin love steeleye span. I was only a nipper when introduced to these beauts. Nuff respeck. 🤘

I wish I'd seen this line-up. I didn't know Mr Zorn was playing with them. A great musician who will be very missed:-(
wow! really great. Watta band. 40 years on, still got the magic
Excellent band..thankyou
The novel Fanshawe
Seen them a few time always a brilliant night.
This tune is so culturally significant that it freaks me out.
I discovered these through Terry Pratchett, but I love much of their music, not just the Wintersmith album.
My favorite song!
Superb quality - as always!!!
Ti's good to see them, and hearing well still 😊
Love it! The groundbreaking harmonies of Maddy & Co
