additional tip is to put some silicone spray on the hook beforehand, and then spray the opening when you have the hook in there before you work it around. hawk tuah also works
I can vouch for this method. Many years ago I mangled my heater hose using pliers. I dont know what size socket I used but I used a deep socket with an extension and was able to form my hose back round and saved it.

If you do mangle up the heater core tubes, I believe a 10mm socket is the size you need. force them in there and it'll make them round again.

Those heater core ends are about as strong as wet cardboard lol. They bend so easy
