  • Trigger warning: the first song has violent lyrics that I’ve seemed to overlook. Skip the video to 3:36 for the rest of the video with better song choices.
¡Hola! A bunch of my friends and I rallied to Oaxaca, Mexico on behalf of my sister (Jane Park) from another mister's birthday. I made this vlog with a new camera so excuse the shakiness.
I'm also working on a blog post with some photos and a more listed out itinerary of our journey so if you decide to visit, or if any places catch your eye, it'll be on the list!

The story behind the song: it came up on my Discover Weekly and I saw the name of the song and played the first bit and liked it. Often times when I’m editing, I’m inspired by the beats and vibrations of a song without even listening to the lyrics or understanding the deeper meaning of a song. And with the track on repeat for hours as I edit, the lyrical part of the song can fade off into the background. This was one of those instances. Regardless, moving forward I’ll make sure to listen more closely and be more careful with my song choices.

this would ordinarily be a really good video, you are such a skillful video executive producer, but that song entirely ruins the entire video from being in your best of category. Given how popular you've become, you might want to strip that song out and repost this as re-edited. Peace, .

My family is from Oaxaca and I just want to say thank you for recording your experience there. I haven’t been there in a while, so your video was very nostalgic to the city I am proud to be from. Another thing I want to thank you for is for showing Mexico in a “real” aspect (if that makes sense) and not shining it away from its artisan work. I hope you enjoyed your stay and the yummy food.

A weird question, but do you ever find it hard to really immerse yourself in something/somewhere and feel present while part of your job/life style has to do with sharing content online? I'm curious because im not an influencer or anything, but sometimes I find myself wanting to do something or go somewhere/eat something just for the 'aesthetics' of it and how it looks rather than from a genuine interest to experience something for myself.

Gosh I know, I only listened to the first few verses of the song and was tickled by the Oaxaca lyrics. I'm also too zoomed in when I edit and don't focus on the lyrics and didn't realize how... visual the lyrics were until I finished the video. Let's mentally change the lyrics to loving verbs.

Cultural Exchanges Between Mexicans and Fiipinos
    (the 'Chinese Indians' in Mexico)
    During the Galleon Trade
The galleon trade greatly stimulated interactions between Acapulco and Manila. many Mexicans settled in Manila and scored of Nahuati words entered Tagalog, the main Filipino language. These included atole, avocado, balsa, cacao, calabaza, camote, chico, chocolate, coyote, nana(y), tatay(y), tocayo, and zapote. In addition, the Filipino currency has the same name as Mexicans - the "pesos." A large number of Filipino migrated in the other direction, escaping from their life of servitude aboard a galleon by jumping ashore on the coast of Colima and Guerrero. One sizable community settled in Coyuca, on the Costa Grande, 50 km north of Acapulco. Filipino influence in Mexican life and culture is most evident in the Pacific coast of Mexico, from Colima in the north of Oaxaca in the south, more than a thousand miles distance. Acapulco is in the state of Guerrero north of Oaxaca. In this area, there are thousands of people with strong Malay features. The prevailing design of the houses and buildings in this area is based on the Filipino "bahay kubo" - houses made of thatch. In the state of Guerrero, scholars have found about 300 Filipino names. Their descendants are concentrated in the small districts of Expinallilo and Coyuca about 20 miles north of Acapulco. One family in this area has produced a lady senator by the name of "Maganda." In Mexico City, there are many professionals with Filipino heritage. Early Filipinos in Mexico were called locally as "Chinese Indians" and brought their experties in the cultivation and use of palm trees with them. In Tagalog, palm fronds are known as "palapa" and by the end of the 18th century, this name was in use, too, for the palm roofed shelters which remain a distinctive style of architecture along Mexico's coasts. The coconut palm's sap is known locally as "tuba." Filipino newcomers fermented the resulting coconut wine into a potent drink. Henry Bruman, a University of California geographer, documented how Filipino seamen on the Manila Galleon also introduced simple stills, for making coconut brandy, to western Mexico during the late 16th century. These techniques were quickly adopted by Mexicans who were then able to turn the hearts of their native agave plant into "tequila." An excellent example of how developments in transportation can encourage cultural exchanges, and diminish the social, economic, and cultural distance between places.
