Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On) [Top of the Pops 16/07/81] 1859pm 19.12.24 dunno, mate... what would you have deemed the ballet lads when they first began with what i can only call sack cloth and ashes chic as they sang musclebound etc etc...? this song's ok, also.... so how cruddy do you feel you look if you're not even in accord with the era in which you live? are these guys winking at birds in the audience or looking intently at their instruments? one would have though if a fan was so much in awe she or he would also be looking intently at the musician's instrument...
Loved the way the Spandau boys faded to the background, to give Beggar & Co some of the limelight. Respect. Don’t see much of that with new acts nowadays.
Loved this Renaissance pop from the early 80's and never get tired of this. Seemed to be the last of genuine band music....who knew how to play and sing their own creations. These guys and their contemporaries were truly original....and FUN ❣
Some people seem to forget, well maybe because they weren't around THAT Spandau Ballet were a MAJOR Dance band before True. They made high end and high class dance music for clubs and dressed completely street edge London. I DIE for what Martin is wearing x Chanto No.1 was, is and always will be KILLER!
I seen Spandau Ballet in concert and at that time their stylist was SADE. They both are awesome in concert. Sade, I seen at the MGM Grand and she got a standing ovation her voice and band are Exceptional.
I love Chant No 1. It's a very powerful song, with much energy in it. 🎶 Whenever I hear it, I want to dance... I remember how SB performed this song in the O2 Arena, on the Reformation Tour in 2010. I loved that great performance, too...
I still remember watching this for the first time at age 11. We were living in Italy, but visiting family friends in the UK. I instantly crushed on Tony Hadley. Didn't get to see the Spands live until '86, when we were living in England again and I was 16. (This remains one of their best!)
'I don't need this pressure on I don't need this pressure on I don't need this pressure on I don't need this pressure on I don't need this pressure on I don't need this pressure on' Trumpet bit 🎺
I still think Gary is a prat for taking his friends to court. Would they have been a, huge success without the talent, looks, and charisma of all five of them? NO.
Again.....outstanding performance with such soul and funk!! I love it 💕🌟 Defo a song to get ya movin and shakin 💃🏻 Tony looks stunning and love his lip sync performances--he did it so brilliantly!!! Thanks Spandau Ballet for the awesome, soulful sounds that made the 80s so memorable 🙏🏼🌟 🎶
Eureka...since circa 1993-1995, while on graveyard shift duty & my 1st listen to this song. I'm heading to 70 in 2022 & lemme tell ya...it's a Joy to finally find a song from wayback! Now, if I could only find the one that sounds kinda like the Stones with the line "she's giving it all up this time..." Call me: 'Joyman.'
I'm 97% certain that this baseline was 98% used by Garbage in a song called #1 Crush (albeit slowed down a bit...) and, as such, Garbage put "#1" in the title. Nobody could convince me otherwise😊
WAKE UP!!!!!! A renaissance is coming!! A REVOLUTION!! grab your instruments!!! LET IT BE YOUR VOICE!!!! START A MUSIC MOVEMENT IN YOUR CITY!!!!!!! THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!!!! BREAK THE RULES!!!!!! THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!!! BEYOND ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it goes like this: "I'm envious of Tony's voice and talent, and insecure/I keep looking over at him jealously guarding my position and trying to assert myself/Tony's too handsome and it drives me nuts...something something..."
I think this was their first song with a brass section. Did it inspire them to include the sax more? In those early videos we've seen Steve Norman only on guitar and percussions.
I love funk & dance music of the 70s & 80s but when it comes to music and style I preferred what Spandau Ballet made musically and the style they had before this and wished they’d stayed with it for another year or 2. I’m thinking of great tracks like Muscle Bound, To Cut a Long Story Short and Freeze. After Chant they become a straight up pop band and they lost their cool/edge. I’m sure lots of people including the band members will have a different opinion to me and that’s fine because it’s only an opinion and we all have our own take on things.
Such a move away from the synth sound. I think this is my second favourite song after cut a long story short. It was a bit like kid creole. Tony was very similar to Dave vanian.
Said to be the first song commercially released featuring a Simmons SDSV electronic drum kit. This being Top of the Pops they were of course lip syncing.
I thought it was Wham too! I’ll be honest, I remember hearing this song probably in 1985 on WLIR.. I only knew of Spandau Ballet from Smash Hits magazines Bc I was a massive Duranie turned New Waver/Goth.. I used to think SB were the ugly Duran Duran😂😂. I’ve come to respect Spandau lately though.. all good guys. Part of the fabulous 80s British Invasion that saved my life from American chart boredom.
OMG! The Brass Section killed it on this track.
that was by a band called beggar and co= they had a bit of success with a track called somebody help me out
How does this lot look better than me in 2023 when they're at least 10 years older than me and I was a fan as a schoolboy in 1982!!!

Spandau Ballet with Beggar and Co. combo, New Wave and BritFunk rockin' it! Those were the days!
The singer with the most beautiful voice.
The most polite singing voice... lol
Absolutely I agree with jour:)🥇🙏
Best looking too and still is beautiful 🥰🥴
Morrisey better
All those boys were beautiful! Classy too.
I remember seeing this on TOTPS and falling madly in love with Tony. So stunning and classy looking. And then the voice….❤
Same, and agreed!

Sade oozed style and what a voice
Stationed in the UK 1981 and they were tearing it up before any of the big hits
This was nearly 40 years ago, incredible.
Have a beer at 1am and listen to this in the Dark.
This was my favourite song
Fabulous. UK funk at it's best.
I want all of them under my Christmas tree. I don't care how old they are or how young I am!
That horn section 🤩
BEGGAR & Co.!!
@@agfagaevart and light of the world, great bands

My favorite spandau track, love both spandau and duran duran
What a cool song and they look great on stage. 1981 impresses!!!

I've been wanted this.
Brilliant Ibiza song, this needs a dance remix! Memories ! UK 🇬🇧
The Kemp Brothers still got it going on,💝💝.
I still think Gary is a prat for taking his friends to court. Would they have been a, huge success without the talent, looks, and charisma of all five of them? NO.
Beggar & Co. in the background. Very underrated jazz-funk track.

Such awesome 🔥🔥🔥!!! Sounding wikkd in 2020, this has stood the test of time. Thanks Spandau Ballet 🙏🏻😃
I totally agree, the whole act is impressive. I love the horns and the chorus!
One day you have a group called "Spandau Ballet", the next day nobody remembers you.
Spandau...

The song was a hit in the clubs here in the US, but received only a little airplay on national radio.
Start of the big 5; Spandau ballet, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Wham, Frankie goes to Hollywood ❤
Love the sound, makes me feel like dancing ❣️
Unusually beautiful song:)🥇🙏
Nothing unusual for those of us who lived it!
Una bella melodia, molto trascinante !!!

Truly great
Does someone know what Gary is rapping at the end? It's a genius move within a great song, by the way.
th-cam.com/video/SxzWPgFLnBA/w-d-xo.html. Gary explains that the rap at the end is basically instructions on how to get to a club in Soho

All of the ska bands had brass sections.

"Touch Me" used a sample of this song, but then they said "No".

Not quite chant no 2 but still acceptable 🤔😋
I can't help get the feeling that Tone is temporarily discombobulated.
Ummm…am I the only one who noticed Steve Norman had white stickers on his nipples??!😮
I love you let’s play charades

ファンキーだしトニーの声がソウルフル。
