Thank you so much for giving the masses free education! I'm a beauty school dropout with chronic illness. I cut my own hair just because it's physically too hard to get into the salon. Your videos have made my life so much easier!! I appreciate your tips for students/practicing hairdressers too - like what kind of mannequin heads you use. Practice makes better beauty! 💕
I'm with you 100% on the base being more solid. It gives a much more organized feel to the cut while not being too rigid. The combination of layers and blunt ends is bomb! Thanks for the video.
THANK YOU for teaching that the strong line helps strengthen the cut, and you can STILL give it lots of movement, without shattering the crap out of the structure. I like to razor cut, too, but this just confirms to the client, WHY regular cuts are important for keeping a style looking fabulous. This is just as loose, free and sexy, and really an easy cut to follow.
Fantastic haircut!! Best use of time with a superior result! Excellent!! I'm a 30 year veteran in the hair business and I learned more useful and progressive education from you compared to any hair show I've been to in the past 10 years. Hats off to you and your well deserved success!!
Thank you for posting this! I cut my daughter’s hair using this technique. I’ve never done more than trim my kids’ hair so this was pretty drastic. It worked out great though! And she loves it. ❤️
Thank you so much for understanding how to teach someone to cut their own hair. There are so many videos on here that are so confusing but you took the time to take small steps so we can follow along. Big Thank You. Lots of hair dressers on here who do not know how to teach.
Thank you so so much for this video! Honestly I was dreading to go to the salon because most people that work at those places here make you feel like you're a defendant in court and that you're guilty by default but you gotta go through the interrogatory anyway and the worst thing is that they don't even know how to cut hair and have the nerve to charge after that. Lucky for me I found your video and it's so well done my Mom cut it for me and it looks awesooome!!! Great instructions, great quality of video, love you Matt, you saved my hair :)
thank you so much for this! i tried it on myself and it turned out perfectly , i'm not a hairstylist at all but i tried my best!! i'm willing to experiment !!! your videos are lovely ...
I just tried this cut on myself, in a way you'd probably shiver at - with dry hair, cheap scissors and a lot of guesswork (I'm not a hair stylist). But guess what? It STILL came out great!! So I guess that is how amazingly clear and concise your video is;). Thanks!
The curls are distracting to seeing the finished haircut 🤷♀️… Can you please smooth it (even with just a brush) before you Curl it next time? I really wanted to see your cut
Can you do a tutorial on “mature” haircuts? I’m in Beauty School and we have a lot of older client walk ins and their hair is so fragile (usually not all the time) and I have trouble cutting while weight distributing
I love the way that you teach and make the cut so easy to do with your technique. I also love that you show how to style the hair. You are gifted at teaching! 🙏🏻Thank you very much! ❤️
Just did this on my hair with side bangs and it turned out fabulous. The easiest tutorial I have seen so far for this type of cut that I been searching for. Thanks for the video.
You know the tutorial is bomb when you can do this haircut on yourself, with 4 hours of sleep, during a slightly manic episode, on dry hair, with chunky kitchen scissors ✂️ 👍 😂 and it STILL comes out great!! ❤
Thank you! I couldn’t find anybody who is doing this and I didn’t think entering in messy choppy was going to get me anything but thank you so much for describing this cut this way which allowed me to find you I love it and you made it so simple!
I have naturally curly hair as well. My question is: how long the top layer is relation to the guide from center back? I assumed it would be long than the back guide and not curl as well?
I wanted to thank u for all u posts you do for all of us fellow hairdressers. After 14 years in the business and a teacher myself u have given me such valuable lessons and u are a true educater. Hope to make it to learn from u in person one day! Thanks again! A from Israel
Thank you so much for this easy to follow, excellently explained tutorial! I cut my hair at home and just tried this cut for the first time. It looks better than if I would have went to a professional! I'll be referring to this video in the future! I LOVE this cut! Thanks, again!
Wow. You don't even know how grateful I am to have found this channel. Not only do you cover some of the basics I learned in hair school, but really how to properly apply those basics, such as shape of the head in relation to cutting lines. Not to mention this particular haircut, which I have actually stressed a bit to myself while browsing pinterest and seeing this haircut again and again that I wouldn't quite know how to get it just right if a client requested this.
Yessss I've been looking for this and then I found your channel. I study make-up and hair but we also learn how to color and cut hair because we learn how to make wigs and we need to know how to style them. But we only learn these super boring and dated hairstyles. This channel is a lifesafer!
Hi , I love this hair cut, but my hair is thick and wavy. My question is, is this hair cut suitable for thick and wavy hair, and if yes , can you tell me please, what do I say to my hairdresser to get this haircut? Many thanks!
Yes, as someone who also has thick wavy hair, this style is great for our hair type. You just won't need to style it as much as he does with the mannequin head. You can try the style at a longer length at first to get a feel for it and then go shorter when you feel more comfortable with it.
Love all your videos and greatly appreciate all that you do. I love that you have such a passion for hair and teaching. I never had subscribed to anyone on TH-cam before but after watching your coffee talk interview today it motivates me to get more involved with social media. You had so many good points on that video and i cant wait to get into the salon tomorrow and start recording videos of my work instead of just pictures. It’s so true how we need to engage with our viewers more and who you want to see your work and not just worry about followers, but to make that connection. Sorry for the long comment just wanted to thank you!!!!!!!!! Your amazing
I'm going to a Pivot Point member school. I love watching your videos to help reinforce what I'm learning in school. Our manikins are the snap cap ones. Not exactly fond of them. We have the older version of them and they're difficult to change the caps. Love your videos, again helps me to reinforce what I'm learning in school.
Love your videos Matt, could you do a video just on the various ways you section hair and why? I know you have a specific way that you section hair that seems slightly different in almost every video but Im having a hard time retaining all of them.I know you explain your reasons for the partings before each cut but If you could do one video with a rundown on how you go about choosing which sectioning to use I could write them down and categorize it in my brain better.. hope that makes sense and again thanks so much for the education. Your vids are priceless!
Ohhh yay this was helpful, thanks!! You should do a video on troubleshooting layers. I feel like sometimes my layers can be slightly choppy, not flowing.
I have fine hair and I like to cut it myself. I was having a tough time figuring out how to get this cut and your explanation and demonstration is perfect!!! Thank you for taking the time (but not too much,) to break this down. AMAZING!
I have fine hair too and can't find a stylist that can ever create the looks I'm going for. I feel like I have never had a great hair cut. I'm fairly adept at cutting my own hair to some degree but how in the world were you able to do this on your own? Particularly the back....I would appreciate any advice or tips :)
Thank you! I tend to cut my own hair and you've just showed me how to get a more polished messiness🤗 I will try to follow your work in the front of my head since I've already cut the back shorter than you have. Wish I would've seen this before last night 🤦🏽♀️.
Matt, question: when you are starting to cut the right side of her head (7.21 mins in) are you taking your guide to cut those side layers from the back layer you just cut? I keep trying to rewatch and determine as I see you bring in a little piece, but I just want to be sure! Thanks for all your fabulous videos! HUGE fan!😘
Thanks Matt for deconstructing the haircut and showing it step by step, very helpful! I have two haircuts that I am curious about, one is the Rachel (Jennifer Anniston's character on Friend's) and the second is how to properly taper a man's neck line like a barber. Thanks for helping us out in the field, it is very, very much appreciated.
Hello, sorry it's maybe a stupid question but HOW do you to use a double tipsy? A simple (one hole,Iknow, but with a smaller hole ?? Thanks for your channel and tips.😍
I’m 22 years old and I’ve only had my hair cut in a salon maybe 5 times? Otherwise it’s been my aunt, my older brother (with clippers?? No scissors??), the kitchen of a family friend who *used to* work in a salon, and most recently, myself. But this video alone made me want to go to a salon and get a haircut as soon as possible. It’s so complex! So much volume! Not something in my skill set right now. Wow 🥺😍
thank you guys for choosing my cut! I was half asleep and saw the headline. ..then saw my question and thought I was delusional. ;) very helpful, I have a few different methods I use now so I can definitely add this... it's much quicker and more structured, since I do always end up going in with a razor. Jose Rivera had a good follow up to this, he asked what if the client wants to have a slight A line in the front? :) would you change up the sectioning? thanks again! jen
Haha you're welcome! I would change my finger angle during elevation to work shorter from the crown to longer at the face. Then once the layers were cut I would hold everything straight down just like I did in the video but instead of cutting square I would change my finger angle to represent the line I want at the base.
I love all of your education videos! I would love to learn what I could about doing at least some of these hair cuts on women who have very, very dense hair. Thank you!
I love this cut. I am not a hairstylist but I like to follow along when getting my haircut. I am wondering if this cut would be good for someone that doesn't want to have to style their hair everyday but still look good and sassy? Thank you for your help and I love your channel!
I think what you're doing is great -I couldn't pay $20 for a hair cut or color so everything I learn is on youtube and ....usuuually my hair looks great So thanks to all of you out there doing what you do ;)
Hey Matt, great cut! This might be obvious but I missed your determining length when you pulled the side straight up. Did you use your guide piece from the top of the back section?
Thank you very much! I love how you explain, find it very clear. I watched the video and immediately tried it on my partner. (Well, that was what I was watching it for, lol!) I am very much a beginner, and have never had any training (though I have cut hair quite a few times before, bleached it, dyed it, and made dreadlocks). When you finished the cut, you jumped straight to styling it. I would have loved to see the mannequin from all angles, after the cut, but without any styling, to compare my efforts to your results. In any case, I enjoyed the video a lot, and found it very useful. My partner was quite happy with the haircut, and I am very grateful to you for sharing your expertise! Have a great day!
Adore your lessons much.Deep, give much details of ,,how to make a haircut",to make the form, which way to put the hairs into the form... good job.thanks
Ive watched this video twice because I love it so much & find its very salon friendly. Second time watching I noticed when you were layering the back you were using the wide teeth of the comb..you dont need that much tension bc its a free looking cut??
Do you have experience cutting hair? I want to ask my sister to do it for me but I'm not sure if you need to be even a bit experienced to do this, although it's clear-cut
This is the haircut i got a month ago i was nervous because i have never had my hair this short but i am so pleased i love it so so EASY too style i just flipp my hair scrunch it then GO! 😁
Awesome video! I used some of these techniques today and my client loved her cut! Even after being in the biz over 12+ years, we can always pick up something new from each other. I really appreciate all you guys do!!!! Keep it going!!!!
I would like to see the Diane Keaton haircut along with the styling products you would use to get the style. Also, I would like to know what cut you think is best for fine hair.
you are the only person In the whole internet who actually explains how to do this properly
Your an awesome educator and I am addicted to your channel.
Follow maksim nikitochkin he is also a great worker, they' re the 2 best youtuber

so glad you demoed this cut. I feel like every client has been coming in with pictures of this haircut!!
Best tutorial ever. Thank you so much. This cut is foolproof. I followed every step and it came out beautifully.
You, Sam Villa, and Guy Tang are my favorite hair channels on TH-cam.

No one in my town can do this cut. I'm going to challenge it myself. Thank you for this wonderful video.
I just did this to my best friend and it turn out good I love it.. Thanks for explaining every step..
Would you please demonstrate an A line bob on curly hair??
Wow that’s the best and the simplest tutorial I’ve seen. After 89 other videos! Thanks❤
Just a quick question. If the client parts their hair on a specific side, would you change how you cut the horseshoe section?
I used this technique today! Client loved the results so did I! Thank you!!
This is awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing
Ohhh yay this was helpful, thanks!! You should do a video on troubleshooting layers. I feel like sometimes my layers can be slightly choppy, not flowing.

Love watching your videos. So informative. Explaining why you do things the way you do. I could watch your vlogs all day. Thank you so much
Great cut as usual Matt; thanks! Good point mentioning the SAI with the Pivot Point mannequin-that's a serious issue in many countries.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 thanks!!
Hair salons are mad at youtube... I can do my own Bob at home Aleluya 💇♀️
Me too.
Can you really do this to your own hair?
this helped me with styling. I feel the woman who cut my hair did it and really didn't walk me through to keep it looking like this. Thank you
Thanks Matt for deconstructing the haircut and showing it step by step, very helpful! I have two haircuts that I am curious about, one is the Rachel (Jennifer Anniston's character on Friend's) and the second is how to properly taper a man's neck line like a barber. Thanks for helping us out in the field, it is very, very much appreciated.
Just did this cut on my mum after watching this video a ridiculous amount of times, she loves it!!
Wow I think you explained more in one haircut video than my teachers did in two years of cosmetology school! Amazing video, thank you! Subscribed!

I'd add a photo if I could :/
looks great. i'd love that cut for myself but could never cut it myself like that.
How could you do this yourself in the back specifically
Having a straight end to a curl really does make a difference. It makes it look natural and carefree!
This man explains perfectly the way we want a haircut to have longevity and structure. Cubism!! Love this technique
I just love the cut! Your an amazing stylist to watch and learn from! Great job and again thanks for sharing your talent...
Did this haircut on myself last night and I love it!!!
So glad you did this I have been looking for this style for a long time
Loved the free flow cut!!!
Thanks keep sending videos

I legit used this tutorial to cut my own hair and it looks AMAZING.
How'd you do it on yourself?
This is a beautiful ,great and prefect hair cut .Thank you with my best wishes for you and your company .
How can I do this haircut on myself? Because I tried to follow the instructions and do it on myself and I really messed up my hair
Try better
Love this cut! And I've used it a lot lately! 😊 thank you so much. Keep the cuts coming 🙏🏻👍🏻
I think what you're doing is great -I couldn't pay $20 for a hair cut or color so everything I learn is on youtube and ....usuuually my hair looks great So thanks to all of you out there doing what you do ;)
1986KillerQueen $20 for a colour? Is this 1955?
no but people say things like an $80 haircut is cheap and HOW DARE anyone say otherwise [Brittany Gray is one of many]
Love it! You're very interesting to watch, and your thought process is amazing.
I am a student so this is really great and useful to me! saving my grades
I know this is a really old video but I just used this to give myself a haircut I really love. I’m not a hair stylist! Thank you.
I can’t believe people dislike this video it’s so beautiful
This is the most helpful video I’ve ever found- THANK YOU
Hey Matt, great cut! This might be obvious but I missed your determining length when you pulled the side straight up. Did you use your guide piece from the top of the back section?
Love it!! Just a lilbit too layered on top for me , great video anyxay
Such a great cut and easy to understand like always!! You guys do an awesome job!
Awesome thanks 👍🏻
Thank you very much! I love how you explain, find it very clear. I watched the video and immediately tried it on my partner. (Well, that was what I was watching it for, lol!)
I am very much a beginner, and have never had any training (though I have cut hair quite a few times before, bleached it, dyed it, and made dreadlocks). So, I have some feedback, but I understand it comes from my beginner perspective:
I found it non-trivial to part the hair in the ways in which you did in the video, and would have very much loved to see how you did it, or even just to have had a link to another video.
I cant get enough of watching you . You are my role model . Amazing .
If the client wears a side part would you cut that way instead of the center?
When he holds it like that and you think of Medusa 😂😂😂
Yes! I was just about to say, she looks like a gorgon
So it’s a stationary guide at the occipital bone? Do you direct every subsection towards the occipital bone?
Super clear, organised, methodical approach. Thank you!
Thanks so much! My hair turned out great!💇🏼♀️
Adore your lessons much.Deep, give much details of ,,how to make a haircut",to make the form, which way to put the hairs into the form... good job.thanks
Ive watched this video twice because I love it so much & find its very salon friendly. Second time watching I noticed when you were layering the back you were using the wide teeth of the comb..you dont need that much tension bc its a free looking cut??
Do you take the hair from the front just straight and cut it or are you going to the left or to the right a bit ?
Great video!! Thanks so much! Exactly what I am trying to achieve! Can you tell me how long is the guide on top? Thanks
Stunning!!
thanks SOOO much! my hair looks amazing! ( i did it myself to!)
Do you have experience cutting hair? I want to ask my sister to do it for me but I'm not sure if you need to be even a bit experienced to do this, although it's clear-cut
Of course you need experience for correct execution of this haircut
Another beautiful amazing haircut video!
Thank you!👍👍👍
This is the haircut i got a month ago i was nervous because i have never had my hair this short but i am so pleased i love it so so EASY too style i just flipp my hair scrunch it then GO! 😁
Awesome video! I used some of these techniques today and my client loved her cut! Even after being in the biz over 12+ years, we can always pick up something new from each other. I really appreciate all you guys do!!!! Keep it going!!!!
So happy to hear you could use some of these techniques right away. Thanks for sharing!
Can you tell me again the name of that iron/gel and hairspray
The haircut is Fantastic! You are Awesome,! , I have learned from you. Thank you so much for your tutorial!
Best curling tutorial ever
me in quarantine cutting my hair after watching a bunch of tik tok compilations: 👁👄👁 (no but srsly thanks! this was a big help!)
I think it's great that you don't know the Kardashians name! Love your down to earth style and simple explanations. Great cut!
I would like to see the Diane Keaton haircut along with the styling products you would use to get the style. Also, I would like to know what cut you think is best for fine hair.
I love this cut!!! What if the client didn't necessarily want the face framing effect? Could I just continue pulling everything up?
