- Yossi Levi, Car Dealership Guy CEO, joins 'Power Lunch' to discuss the state of the U.S. auto market as China hopes to launch EVs in America.
US automakers will do everything they can to block a competitor from selling cars in the US, rather than just making a better product.
What competitor have they prevented from entering the US?
BMW? MERCEDES? TOYOTA? HONDA? HYUNDAI? FIAT? VOLVO? SUBURU?
The problem for them is, the US can't block Chinese imports in Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, etc. If US carmakers need 100% tariffs in order to not be obliterated at home - where they have the advantage of a sympathetic consumer base and much lower transport costs, among other things - how will they be able to compete in the rest of the world?
And if US carmakers lose both China and those countries where China is playing for keeps, they will lose most of their revenue.
The US couldn't even block Huawei from dominating almost all 5G infrastructure outside the US and Europe; my own cellphone and internet providers, in the Latin American country where I live, run on Huawei tech.
(Incidentally, Chinese brands are not only dominating the EV market here, their lower prices have turbocharged its growth; if by the time the EV transition is done the non-Chinese carmakers can't yet make EVs as cheap and fully featured as the Chinese, they will likely be outcompeted and ejected from the market here.)

@@mikev4373 In the early days, US tried very hard to stop the Japanese auto imports. The anti Japanese sentiment was quite high. Only when Toyota, Nissan etc decided to start building cars in US, the attitude changed.
@@mikev4373 US has quota on both Korean and Japanese cars import. BMW and Mercedes are luxury cars. US don't make too many of those. Besides Japan and Korea are not sovereign nations. US can always force them to make additional compromises And half of the Japanese cars are actually made in America. So some of the profit are actually for US economy not Japanese economy.

everybody seems to think that the only advantage of chinese EVs is being cheap. but that's not the case at all. They surpass western legacy auto makers in almost every aspect, including technical capacity. Tesla might be the only crown jewel for now for the west. Those who were shocked by the Chinese cars at Beijing auto show this year, and Shanghai auto show last year were not like: Oh sh*t, chinese are so cheap, and western cars are in trouble. It's actually like, oh ,the chinese cars are so good, and the western cars are in trouble.
True story, Toyota brought a concept car to Beijing auto show and it was worse than Chinese production cars taking orders next door
@@vlhc4642 Agree. Toyota has been bad for severals years now. I think they got too complacent for being too dominant for too long. My last purchase was a toyota rav4 and I regret it after discovering how other brands has more features, better quality and cheaper price. The only thing carrying Toyota right now is name recognition where people like me did not research before buying a car and just thought of what we were used to seeing a lot of people used to use. When I look at Chinese and Korean cars, not only are they cheaper but they look better and has more features. BYD and MG has sooo many good car models.
I haven't seen a single Chinese car that appeals to me at any price. I'm not saying they aren't good cars, but they seem to be fairly generic, like appliances. I can see the cars appealing to poor people, though. Full disclosure, I drive a Mercedes E450 Coupe and a Ford F150.

It’s the increasing price of gasoline that make Americans want to buy smaller cars. That’s what really hurt the US automakers in 2007-9 when oil and gas prices were high and all they made were 5 blocks to the gallon pickups

There are videos of the factories on TH-cam. BYD, Xiaomi, etc. 90% robotic.
BYD is the only company who is completely vertically integrated.... from design, producing batteries, producing parts, screens, body and even have their own RORO transport ships to deliver their cars overseas.... maybe only thing they don't make is the tyres... so they can control every component and process inhouse
They're most likely losing money on those models, using them as loss leaders to drive the competition out of business. Also, the $11k car is a postage stamp sized micro car. It wouldn't sell in the U.S.

Chinese car makers are highly automatic and high tech, they upgrade 2 generations ahead of foreign car makers, highly vertically integrated, so cars are much cheaper with good quality. US protection will cause US car makers lose out big in the long run, more lagging behind over time.

The US is expected to subsidize Tesla with $34B between 2023 and 2030. This isn’t even including the other subsidies that Tesla is going to receive from previous policies. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has subsidized BYD between 2018 and 2022 with the whopping massive amount of $ 3.7B.
So the American company got subsidized 10 times more than the Chinese company, out of the $119B in battery subsidies GM got about $21 B, the truth is the US regime is subsidizing their electric vehicles way more than China is.
On November 30, 2023 GM announced record $10 billion stock buyback, more than it’s spending on UAW raises- as its electrification push stalls (Source Bloomberg). That share buyback from General Motors was just q4 of 2023, $10 B, they get $20B in subsidies and they spend $10 B giving that money back to shareholders. The money isn’t going to innovation like it should, the money seems to go these bloated bureaucratic corporations where they take the money give it to shareholders or give it to executive bonuses or management teams that don’t know how to build a car, get so complicated convoluted they just can’t do business competitively anymore.
They don’t need to, instead of being forced to be competitive, being forced to actually spend the money on R&D and producing a high-quality product, they just put a 102.5% tariff on anybody that they cannot compete.

As China becomes more and more like the United States, and the United States becomes more and more like the Soviet Union
China has very smartly cornered the raw materials market for EVs while the US has been asleep at the wheel. Chinese politicians don’t have to worry about reelections while US politicians only think about that all the time and not the well being of their country and people.
Essentially, China saw that EVs would be the future back in the 90s and started investing accordingly, with ample government support; BYD's hometown, for example, has every bus being electric since 2017, every taxi and ridesharing car electric since 2019, and now has more EV fast chargers than fuel pumps.
Which, mind, is what the whole world should have done back then if it was concerned about CO2 emissions.
And even if you don't care about emissions, the only weak link in the EV tech chain are batteries; everything else in an EV performs better, is cheaper, is more reliable, and is lighter than the equivalent parts on an ICE vehicle, and have been like that since a long time ago. EVs just needed batteries to improve enough in order to become both cheaper and better in just about everything compared with ICE cars. So China invested very heavily on battery tech, speeding up its development, meaning they are now years ahead on both the batteries themselves and production technology, and are quickly getting to the point they can make EVs cheaper than other countries make ICE cars - China seems to have already reached this point for some car sizes, and in the next couple years should get to that for the whole of the auto market.
Well, it wasn't that the US was asleep. No developed country wants anything to do with dirty business (mining and refining) with heavy carbon footprint. It was expected that China would dominate the low-wrung raw material supply-chain while Japan and South Korea who were ahead in battery tech and manufacturing with global automakers in the West as end customers.
China decided to hijiack this along the way -- they practically banned the Japanese/Korean battery makers -- and they still don't have access to China's local EV market -- and forced all foreign EV makers to use local batteries from local battery makers only since 2016. This changed the whole plan and now everyone has to localize their own supply-chain to cope with China's quest for domination; so as not to repeate the rare earth metal fiasco of 2010 when China weaponized their position in rare earth metal against Japan to settle a geopolitical dispute in 2010.

There is no more free market! If government decided to protect failing buisnesses from competition, it is a bad start. We will end up like Argentina that produced everything on its own, and eventually failed.
When the US buyer imports goods subject to tariffs from China, they pay the tariff to the US government. This cost and any markup are typically passed on to the end consumer, meaning consumers ultimately bear the burden of tariffs through higher prices. The Chinese seller, however, does not directly pay the tariff; the importer in the US bears that responsibility.
China does not suffer the consequences of tariffs. The US consumers are being punished by having to pay higher prices.
In 2012, President Obama, as part of his plan to double the U.S. share of the world's solar panels from 5% to 10%, imposed tariffs of up to 249% on solar imports from China. In response, China retaliated by imposing import restrictions on polysilicon from the U.S. At the time, the U.S. held a 50% share of the global polysilicon market, which has since dropped to under 4%. The U.S. share of the world's solar panels has dropped to under 2%. China has promised to retaliate as strongly in response to new tariffs.
China does not need to go around the new tariffs. Even with a 100% markup, they are still cheaper as the US brands. And the customer will pay ... not China.
Very simple reason: China has the whole ecosystem, its supply-chain cost is much lower than any manufacturer outside of China.
They use much more manual labor than Tesla, and have much lower profit per vehicle than Tesla. And I'd be willing to bet that BYD is losing money on those $10-15k cars. They're using them as loss leaders to drive the competition out of business.

After the introduction of Chinese vehicles in Australia, the prices of both EV and ICE vehicle have dropped, and consumers are the beneficiaries of competition (including those people who have not bought Chinese vehicles).

Extreme low cost from Chinese EVs also come from extreme automation and robots replacing Chinese workers.

Agreed. Had a BMW330e PHEV hybrid and it’s the absolute worse 5 years down the road, when the warranty runs out & the whole hybrid system starts acting up. Especially the inverter component (thing that switches between electric & ICE). Cost almost the entire car’s mkt value at that point for replacement 🙄
US market is a joke. I was ready to spend $25k and I looked and looked and looked and everything was the same. No competition. All the same crap $25k vehicle. So I bought a used car at $8k. When the US automakers get a kick in the hind, I’ll consider buying a new car.
Correct me if I am wrong. My English teacher always told me that the word “cheap” implies low quality and low value. So as a Chinese, it bothers whenever I hear American saying “cheap Chinese EVs”. Chinese EVs are definitely not cheap, they are relatively affordable, of fine quality and great value, too bad that we can’t get them in North America.
That Americans don't want EVs is an American problem. In China, the world's largest auto market, EVs are dominating and their sales are skyrocketing. In the US, people are slow to adapt to change, the necesasry infrastructure for EVs has not been built, and EVs are outrageously expensive. I am sure Americans would buy EVs if they were affordable and the infrastructure was good. The US is going to be left so far behind it won't be funny.
To say US or Japanese car makers can’t build a cheap car is simply lying. Toyota Corolla hybrid full loaded is around 20k USD in China. Bare bone Corolla with a crappy engine, much worse suspension, poorly equipped is 27k usd in US. A bare bone Corolla sells for around 13k usd in China. That is 14k usd difference. Chevy Malibu with 2T engine and 8 spd auto is less than 20K usd in China, same car sells for well over 30k usd in US. Someone explains to me why can’t we import American brand cars from China with China price?
Buick sells EV sedans starting under $14K in China (and they sell reasonably well because Buick is actually undercutting Chinese automakers).
The thing is, production in China is simply cheaper. And it's not about wages, or at least not just them, otherwise places like India and Vietnam would be beating China; instead, China has invested heavily in infrastructure (meaning cheap electricity and logistics), in creating comprehensive and co-located supply chains (which further lower logistic costs), has public banks that pay almost nothing to executives and pay much less dividends than US banks (they use the money freed by that to lower rates), and even private Chinese companies pay far less to their executives and shareholders (the extra money can then go towards R&D, expansion, lower prices, etc).
Case in point, GM's CEO takes home over 20x more than BYD's best paid executive (and some 40x more than BYD's CEO). The difference pays for a huge amount of R&D.

Talking about USA auto market, EV in USA had been priced on the upper or upper-medium scale for a long time. So there had been low incentive for USA buyer choosing EV.
Furthermore, USA is flooded with SUV heavier and bigger vehicles instead of sedans for 2-3 decades, that tendency did not suit EV manufacturing and EV sales.
The reason why in the US, people believe that EV has swung to an extreme end is because due to the lack of charging infrastructure. In countries where charging infrastructure are everywhere, it makes sense that EV demand continues to sky rocket.
It's not the consumers not wanting EV, it's the infrastructure not there yet, esp the charging stations. I drove my EV to a state park and couldn't find a charging station in ~50 miles. I bet no one has EVs in that area.
To protect the american auto industry, we have to endure using lousy but expensive american made cars. 😬

hes right on one side about ppl being accustomed to large loans at no interest and wanting BIG suvs and luxury cars but its the wrong idea to switch to hybrid and just keeping cars prices high and changing finance options. we need to do what we did when japan came to america with there cheaper to operate smaller cars and just go back to basics. we dont need massive touch screen wars and fat complex rims and luxury materials in our daily commuters that get no range. people want cheap to operate daily vehicles that look unique style wise but arnt full of crap inside. if some applied lotus's mantra of "lightness" to an suv i bet itd sell like hot cakes
Battery costs in the US are a lot higher than they are in China. Prices are not yet low enough makes EVs in the US to sell at $20k.
We let Japanese and Korean cars in. They are better made than American cars. American companies stepped up and kind of improved. At one competition is a good thing. If American cars can't compete maybe they should close.

US automakers are generally no longer competitors to the likes of BYD. They are nowhere to be found on the playing field even.
It’s not customer does not want EV, its the deficient underlying infrastructure (fast charging station, battery swapping) that is giving people the pause.
and Chinese EV makers coming to the US have to factor that.
BYD just had another bunch EVs catch fire at one of their dealerships a few days ago. The 10th such fire in the last 5 years, plus one at their factory. I've never heard of that at Tesla, ever!

100% tariff, they still undercut the competition. The US has been slow or sometimes hostile on green tech, so China will offer that and eat their lunch.
Many countries can use solar or other renewable energy to generate electricity. It is cheaper and cleaner. That is another area China can help. Chinese EVs will create new car market. Don't forget China car market is biggest car market in the world. And less than 4.9% of Chinese cars are EVs despite all the growth.

This ends the same way it ended with Japanese and Korean cars in the 80-90s. They build factories in the USA that produce just enough of the car to qualify as an american built car. The Nissan Versa is a decent car, built in the USA, and costs $16,000. But the real breakthrough for US built EVs is going to be the transition to sodium based batteries. There are already chinese vehicles being built with sodium batteries and we are seeing US based companies going into full sodium battery production. Lithium supply chain is a big reason Chinese EVs are so cheap.
except that the Chinese won't get access to the US market. Also remember the US is the largest oil producer now and never have to worry about crazy high oil price that allowed Japan's compact vehicles to dominate.
Sodium is not yet mature and still has too many hurdles, including the falling lithium price, to be used in EVs.

I wouldn't consider buying a Chinese EV unless the manufacturer has tens of millions in tangible assets in the United States. That way, if I get hurt because the car was defective and I get a judgment against the manufacturer, there is at least a possibility that I can collect.

Do you work for an US automaker? Why do you want to block Chinese cars that are safer, higher quality, higher tech, AND only 1/2 or 1/3 of price of US-made cars. Its like you want to block iphones that sells for 200 bucks so US companies can keep selling 500 dollar flip phones.

A more important question is, "Can America navigate around the EV tariff". We are ignoring consumers, and favoring protecting domestic EV market for the manufacturers, and auto workers. How long does domestic car industry need to catch up? It's not like nobody heard about EV. Tesla, with the best and the brightest, a head start, we still need to sacrifice consumer interest to leave a domestic sandbox for the howeveryouwanttodescrobethem.
America need better systems, current political system is turning most people off. Too much corruptions. It's being manipulated by interest groups, parties, and career politicians at every turn. They are colluding irrespective of America success.

Just like the 25% chicken tax on small trucks the consumer ends up getting screwed. The manufacturers did not adjust to compete they just delayed and screwed the consumer.

Why is the US forcing itself to buy EV's all of a sudden? The Chinese position in raw materials is very well known. Making electric motors is much simpler with lower labor costs and the entire battery infrastructure in China already. Who thought this through?
Pushing the scenario forward, the US companies will simply go bankrupt because of the mandate and the Chinese will come in and buy the brands. The UAW will be gone and so will the US auto industry. It will happen in Europe as well. All because of government mandates.
If you really research it, people shouldn't be interested in buying EV's in the first place
