Hearing that Castlevania fans got NFTS over a new game as a celebration hurts to see, and I'm not even a fan of the franchise. That has to be the biggest middle finger to fans who've loved that IP for years.
And as the video mentioned, it is most likely going to happen again for Metal Gear's anniversary. Not getting any announcements could be considered a victory at this point.
At least the Netflix show kicks ass. Seriously if the only good thing about it was the Berzerk reference with Striga daywalker armour it would be worth it. Now that I think about it Konami has a much better track record with tv shows than they do with games.

konami was a fucking icon. it made many great games and series that set the scene for future generations. sadly, it fell to the ways of shitty business practices that ea, activision, and more have used. its a shame theres only like 4 decent game companies nowadays when back then there were a ton
Bro hundreds, propably thousands of decent game companies exist. Way more than back in the day. People seem to forget that indie games exist even though many of them are very high quality and have awesome devs.
Something that isn't mentioned, usually, in relation to Kojima and his troubles at Konami, is that not every title Kojima had his fingers in were financial bangers. More often than not, they would be critically panned and only become cult hits later in their life cycle a la MGS2, and some games only even got made in the first place from Kojima using his executive weight to ensure their development, such as Zone of the Enders and its sequel, despite their startlingly poor sales figures. He made several enemies on the board, especially compared to the project lead for the dragon mobile game who not only was bringing his highly profitable product to the table, but also ingratiating himself to the CEO.
Something I wish was brought up when discussing Konami is Yu-Gi-Oh! They use the banlist as a way to push product instead of getting rid of problem cards and encouraging a healthy format. They don't reprint cards that really need it and when they actually do it's a high rarity card to get people to buy more booster packs or boxes.
They do reprint cards if they need them. I know it sounds stupid but You can't reprint any card in any set. They mostly have themes and putting some weird as earth pyro fusion monster into a wind synchro set won't happen.
While I do agree to a certain extent, Reprints and banning problem cards these days are waaaay better than back in the day. Reprinting cards back in the day was almost a miracle. Or instead of banning Dragon Rulers after a format, they stayed relevant after so many hits.
At least they seem to start to understand that more reprints=more sales, just look at the Albaz structure deck, that thing was awesome. Or GFTP2 which reprinted aluber relatively early
You know, I want to say the recent beginning-of-the-end for NFTs will prevent Konami from pulling that nonsense with Metal Gear but, hey, they made Metal Gear Survive. They're probably just going to do it anyway, let it fail, and use it as another excuse to shelf the franchise.

it's so frustrating what has happened. Moreso the fact they literally treat their employees like dirt, i don't know how japanese work culture works, but stuff like that just shouldn't be legal
I wanna say one big part of japanese work culture (or japanese culture in general) is to not speak out of line. Your superior is your superior in every way, and it's unacceptable to disrespect them. So when shitty people end up in positions of power, they can get away with doing a lot of shitty things. That's how you end up with a glut of employees who commit suicide instead of challenging their work environment.
@@volbla Its part of Japanese culture as a whole, not just the work culture. Sega's Judgement Lost (a Yakuza spinoff following a detective) tackles this specific problem when it came to bullying in High School. It is far more complex than just shitty people getting into position of power. Japan also suffers from spineless citizens being taught to "conform to the norm" no matter what happens. Ignore when someone is in trouble, be it from bullying in class to actual train molestations. This entire mindset in general is why Japan has a high suicide rate, the workforce is just a tip of the iceberg to that problem. This all happens because people that makes themselves stand out rather than standing in line is often seen the more problematic figure, and standing up to bullies is the best way to stand out. Some more dumber examples of this in action is again, in schools. Let's say you happen to be mixed and have brown hair because of it... You would be in violation of the numerous standard dress codes the school enforce for dying your hair. Nevermind that brown is your natural hair color, if you don't dye that shit to black to match every other students in school, you'll be in trouble for dying your hair. The schools are not very flexible with their rules, and even if they are they aren't willing to bend on this particular issue because in their minds: They are not the one causing problems. You are, for having the gulls to be born with brown hair and not black like everyone else. Granted this issue is pretty minor in the grand scheme of all of this, but petty issues like this should make it obvious how bad this problem really is.
@@kyotanaka920 Japan as a whole seems to follow the wording of something rather than the spirit. Like your hair colour example, the wording of the rule is “No hair colours other than this” but the spirit is “No hair colours beyond natural colouring”. It’s an interesting mindset for a nation to have.
@@sirapple589 The instance Kyo brings up is based off of an actual incident in Japan where a schoolgirl was expelled because she wouldn't dye her hair black; her natural color being brown. She was accused of dying her hair brown, which was in violation of the school's dress code, and the teachers who purportedly examined her roots insist that she was lying (even though this clearly wasn't the case). It's pretty much exactly what Kyo described - it didn't matter that the teachers were too prideful to admit that they were wrong, what mattered is that a teenage student spoke out against her teachers. She sued the school over it, even, and despite the overwhelming evidence in her favor, she still largely lost the case as the judge sided with the school in every regard except for her expulsion, and that was only because the school did not go through any channels for the expulsion in the first place.
Taking this time to remind everyone how they estranged and disbanded Team Silent as well in favour of western developers... even though Team Silent clearly had the success, considering the state of Silent Hill today.
I stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh almost exclusively due to the unhealthy state of the game, to the point that even trying to come back as a casual player was still impossible to me. The entire game snowballed in powercreep and unnecessary complexity.

3:10 puts it pretty well. Company makes a bad game for a great franchise, and their conclusion is "people don't like this franchise anymore". No, you made a *bad game* and people didn't like it because it was a *bad game* . That's it. You need to make good games. And when people REALLY like a franchise, the games you make seriously need to perform.
I hope they'd honor multiplat releases and even release future games on PC. I'd love to see Nintendo collaborate with FromSoftware to make a Souls-like Castlevania.

Konami was in its prime in the late 80s and early 90s and made so many great games to never forget. But as time goes on most game companies fall off, as other comments have stated it was just like EA and Activision with terrible business practices.
I disagree, there prime was during the PS1 and ps2 era, silent hill 2, metal gear solid, Castlevania symphony of the knight, Suikoden to name a few. Some companies cant even make one masterpiece or make one revolutionary game in their entire existence

I want to add that in Konami's rhythm games around 2013-15, musicians who worked in-house at Konami also had their names scrubbed from songs to be replaced with a generic "BEMANI Sound Team". Every musician who worked with Konami beyond playable songs had their name changed to this. It's a miracle this change was later reverted but the fact that this made it to the public eye says everything
Konami still makes some arcade games, which you can find at Round 1. Though they are mostly Bemani games, which is not to everyone's taste in the U.S. The Bemani games are sadly the only Konami games I play and look forward to now.
The only thing the author of the video is wrong about is that “Konami was cool”. Konami never was cool. Never. It just happened to employ some really cool people. All of whom obviously tried to flee it as fast as they could once they made a name making games for them.
don't forget the fact that europe doesn't exist to these people when it comes to bemani games that aren't ddr, and even then the ddr games we do get nowadays are always delayed in release (we got ddr a20+ a month before ddr a3 was announced) and are stuck offline.
True, I feel bad for European Bemani fans. Thanks to Round 1 growing in the U.S., it's much easier and convenient to play some of the latest Bemani games compared to the 2000s, where finding Bemani games other than DDR at arcades was kind of tricky depending where you live. It would be nice if Europe had a Round 1 equivalent. Are arcades even popular in Europe still?
@@Dj.D25 i mean there is a european round 1 (but all the cabs are offline and its in russia). however over here in the uk, arcades are kinda popular, but arcades over here generally tend to have one of those 100 in 1 arcade cabs, a bunch of oversized mobile games and if your lucky, some form of ddr cab. at least it isn't as bad as the pump it up situation in the uk (i have only ever found like 3 in the wild and they were all at an arcade in london)
I miss the old Konami. When they were an icon. Even though they still make arcade games you can find at your local Round 1 (mainly their Bemani games other than DDR), it's like they don't care about their reputation and other IP's. What also bothers me is how they sometimes pretend they still care about their franchises and legacy. For example, the choices of Konami characters you can play in Super Bomberman R Online. Characters who mostly didn't have a recent game. Other Konami franchises worth mentioning that haven't had a game in so long: Gradius Goemon Twinbee Suikoden Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster The only other franchises Konami seems to pretend to care about now is Yu Gi Oh, Pro Evolution Soccer (which is now called E-Football) and Castlevania.
>talks about DDR >shows footage of Pump It Up I play Konami's rhythm games (IIDX) and their direction baffles me especially with how greedy they are for their PC ports of Sound Voltex, IIDX and DDR. Not to mention how hesitant they were to give America access to their EAmusement system beyond DDR (We just got it when Heroic Verse came out) yet, all the extra content for Paseli is locked still so No Blaster Gate or Premium Start if you play SDVX or even the gacha generator.
I play some of their Bemani games too. I didn't know that about IIDX, at least songs that required E-Amuse eventually get playable for everyone. I love playing Drummania, but for some strange reason here in the U.S, you can't access Extra/Encore stage songs. You can't play long songs either. No way to play Deluxe mode (requires Paseli) to unlock songs you may have missed out on from past events in older games. Certain events to unlock some songs don't appear to be allowed either. At least some recent events let you unlock former Encore stage songs along with other former event songs, which is nice, for those who missed out on getting them.
I don't understand why Konami didn't just sell or license their games if they didn't want to develop anymore. For years, these games have pretty much been left in purgatory
I knew Konami was bad, mistreating Hideo Kojima, a legendary hero just like any of the Metal Gear protagonists, but the entire company? Thing is, and funny enough that people say it's like a prison there, Kojima implemented a hidden texture for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which was a prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain where Konami's logo was used for the prison camp, that says something right there. Konami had amazing games but turned to the money marketing factor, rather than the fans enjoy these games. I fear what the Metal gear anniversary will hold as I am a huge fan of that series.

Reminds me of what Bamco did with new Gundam breakers. That was such an insanely bad idea for a game. You have mechs you can customize and fight with. What do we do? Pseudo competitions instead of trashing your opponent's mechs.
I remember Koji Igarashi got fed up with not being able to make more 2D Castlevania games anymore because they “don’t appeal to people anymore” (bare in mind this was around 2014 or so when Metroidvania games were starting to really get popular with indie games). He then left to make the Bloodstained series, one of the most successful kickstarters and a game that both sold and reviewed super well (because believe it or not, good games usually are successful). In that time there’s been like 4 Castlevania games, one of which was a 3D God of War style game in 2014, one of which was a mobile game, three of which are collections of older games (which granted are good, but that’s because they were mostly good to begin with), and now NFTs. Truly, Konami knows what it’s doing by not making actual games anymore and having everyone who did make games leave over this fact.

As a Dance Dance Revolution and BEMANI fan, it hurt so much to see how Konami managed to ruin almost everything. Their Music games were awesome, but they lost so much of their glory.
the problem with konami is that they operate on the old japanese man mentality, profit over product, and it's a well known fact they never really understood the appeal of video games in the first place. their best IPs were always born from letting their employees do as they please out of passion, not as a job obligation or a quick cash grab. ever since mgs4, they've gotten reaaally complacent with their IPs, but it's not like the senile gamblers on the slots even know wtf MGS or castlevania are.
They also ruined Hudson, which they bought them, and then just leave them in the dust until they use their characters in the worst ways, like using Super Bomberman R Online as a way to promote all the stuff they have (From what I've seen, that's the only franchise from Hudson that they've used since the buyout). I wished Hudson was bought by Nintendo.
Back when I played through SuperHot, I couldn't remember that one code you must enter at one point, so I entered the Konami code and it actually worked!
Konami is my most hated videogame company, because cancelling Silent Hills was the most tragic thing that happened in videogame industry. Yes, Death Stranding wasn't a masterpiece, but it doesn't mean that SH would have been bad
The fucked up thing about it is they wouldn't ever sell those ips even knowing that they aren't going to do anything but make a shitty version of it and then abandon it and leave it to rot because its better off a dead franchise than in the hands of someone else who cares about it and will make money from it
My opinion on Metal Gear Solid V is thus: Unfinished though it may be, it is one of the greatest games of all time. Had it actually shipped in a completed state as Kojima intended (complete with a fleshed out story with actual cutscenes) then there’s little doubt in my mind it would be the greatest game of all time. (Or at least in the discussion)
Castlevania is my second favorite franchise of all time, and reading that the celebration was gonna be that…. I think I will never in my life feel a disappointment and just sheer sadness again as I felt at that moment
I’m probably the only one who thinks this way, but I think it’s better if you outright abandoned a Uber successful video game franchise than turn it into something god awful like Ubisoft did with far cry. Can you imagine if Atlas made persona 6, released it and it just absolutely sucked? I’d much rather have them leave it at persona 5 if hypothetically all they’re going to do is half ass the next game in the series.
You know a company made a *WRONG* decision when they promote someone who gave them more money (mobile games with microtransaction), than the guy who made quality games that made them so beloved. Now they're pachinko company :( Really sucks, especially when we couldn't get another decent MGS or MGR game anymore
Kojima doesn't want to work on Metal Gear anymore and hasn't for a while, but I can assure that giving him ownership of the IP would still be a good move. It would 100 percent ensure that we get a Metal Gear Rising 2, and if he doesn't work on it, it'll still be him who DECIDES who gets to work on it
On the topic of Capcom in the comments, do people remember when Capcom was on the verge of bankruptcy? Like back in 2013 or so they were doing horribly. But nowadays they are doing great. It's insane how they went from hitting rock bottom to one of the highest companies atm. That's a redemption story right there.
I agree with every single point. It is truly frustrating to see how Konami treats their own franchises and most passionate fans like shit. Just giving them the middle finger at every opportunity they have. I go as far to say that they make Electronic Arts look respectful and wise in comparison.
Platinum Games, Kojima’s team, or Nintendo should own all of Koonami’s assets, but Koonami itself should absolutely go bankrupt, and never make anything ever again ever.
I'd nominate Embracer, but, well, I haven't heard much from them ever since they bought most of Squeenix's IP collection. Probably. Game dev takes time and tends to happen behind closed doors.
Another company falling to the delusion of “money over quality”. Seriously, how can companies be so awful to their workers AND (as a result) their fans?
It honestly still makes me sad to see the direction Konami went after Hideo left. Just the fact they even bothered touching Metal Gear because they just simply own the rights to it was stupid of them because MG Survive just sucked and made no sense in the franchise whatsoever, but it doesnt mean that I still don't love their old games before all of the pachinko machine madness happened with them, like Silent Hill for example is still by far my most favourite horror game franchise ever, but after Team Silent left it kinda just went downhill from there, sure they had other great silent hill games like Shattered Memories and Downpour (I only think Downpour is good because of the way the puzzles are handled and the easter eggs and scares are great so please rip me to shreds for my opinion). Hell I still love all of the Metal Gear series too, like personally I still enjoy just sitting down after a long day and just reboot MGS 3 for example, or hell even just replay MGRR too. Konami used to be great, hell their games basically built my childhood but I was heart broken when I saw what happened after Hideo left and they didn't let him get his award for MGS5. Sorry if I went off with this comment, I hope whoever even bothers to read this has a lovely rest of the day
Also, blame it on Konami for not releasing anything for the Wii U, and not putting their Pro Evolution Soccer games to Wii U or Switch. (Other than the PC-based subscription service music games...) There hasn't been any DDR, GitaDora or Bemani home release since the late 2000s. DDR A3 and GitaDora High Voltage are screaming for home releases already, and yet they are locked in the arcades.
I would love to play those games on console too, especially since there shouldn't be a porting problem now. I think their PC versions of those games are what is considered home release now, but I don't like the idea of having to pay to play them. On the other hand, Bemani games don't seem as popular as they used to be.
And in one year, more and more people are sick of Kojima and his movie game bullshit. Also he got off easy compared to other employees who have their careers cratered by the company's management being downright evil towards former employees who dare ever say a word of what goes on there by black listing them making it near impossible to find work in Japan. Nah, Kojima wasn't mistreated, he has an ego larger than the entirety of Konami's entire HQ and that latest Game Awards was downright pathetic giving him all that time to talk about nonsense while actual game devs that won were given 30 or less to say their piece.

That's tied to anime and manga too. Those cards are from those originally.
They do reprint cards if they need them. I know it sounds stupid but You can't reprint any card in any set. They mostly have themes and putting some weird as earth pyro fusion monster into a wind synchro set won't happen.
Also Master Duel is unfinished, it needs quite a bit of work to make just a little bit better

From what I heard Japan has a (unfortunately) pretty toxic work culture
@@kyotanaka920
Japan as a whole seems to follow the wording of something rather than the spirit.

For years, these games have pretty much been left in purgatory
theyre japanese
Because they’d rather make gambling machines with their IP names all over them.
They still trying to milk it.
Cauwe if they can't make money off of em nobody can
Every time I see the Konami logo, I feel physical pain.
"Why spend time and money making good video games when you can just print shiny cardboard?" - Konami on Yu-Gu-Oh (probably)
Hey, it’s shiny cardboard that ages better than almost all games. Especially these days!

Pachinko machines and nfts, making me wish this company would go bankrupt and sell all the game properties to actual game companies
“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

gotta love it when konami published pop'n music wii, the only pop'n music game released in the west, it was bad, it had only american pop songs and barley any actual pop'n music songs, the controls were bad, it only had 5-key etc. and they never released another pop'n music game in the west
The low budget indie game market place is probably swarming with 2-D titles.
It sounds like Konami treats, their employees like utter filth. I don’t think even Nintendo would go that far. Yeah they’re money hungry, but I don’t think they would go that far.
I think Square-Enix is the next domino to fall like this.
"Konami sucks"
Me, who has been waiting for a Silent Hill game for 10 years: "really? Wow! I didn't know that!"
Silent hill fans gotta let it go lmao. Just let that franchise RIP, it keeps getting worse.
Well at least those NFT’s are tanking in the stock market now. MGS might be safe
It always sucks to hear about how badly big companies and higher ups treat people under their employ. Especially when it’s in a field of your interest like games, sports, movies and animation, etc. Because as a kid you always hope and dream to be doing that someday and than you face the reality of how awful and soul crushing it can be.
I feel like the one word to describe Konami’s legacy is revolutionary. How they’ve fell from grace.
They didn't really fall from grace. They just abandoned their legacy in one industry to move to another one. They still make money from the gambling industry, and they rake in dough with Yu-Gi-Oh cards. They made a relationship with us one day, and then abandoned us for another. It's terrible what they do to their employees. but they're doing it in their country. One where this kind of abuse is culturally acceptable.
@@luliu4572 The problem with Konami is that with the exception of Metal Gear, Zone of the Enders, Silent Hill, and Bomber man R, they ether struggle to make 3d games or they can't translate their games well in 3d. They tried to bring Castlevania and Contra into 3d, they mostly got bad reception.
Which is a problem because 2d games are too difficult to sell well. Lords of Shadow is the best selling Castlevania game but it's not as great as the 2d games. Hard Corps was great, yet no one talks about it???? Why Because it's a modern 2d game and Konami believes that 2d games are too niche. So it feels like Konami has to give up if the games aren't selling well.
the fact that i've been looking at metal gear videos recently makes your video very fitting
They have Bloody Roar. Sell the IP to someone that will do something with it. Damn! One of my favorite fighting franchises and its in the hands of Konami.
The worst companies you can imagine funding, producing and publishing the best sword-fight-action games you have ever played:
Konami: MGR
Activision: Sekiro
Ubisoft: For Honor
Capcom’s still doing decently for now… Although they’ve had their dark age in the 2010s.
@@Comkill117 early 2010s, they started doing fine after RE7 and released absolute bangers like DMC5 and RE8
@@s4nsk_ Yep, definetly, I think when they made RE7 they saw people liked old style of their games so they stick with it. And Re Engine is freaking great, games runs really smootly on PC.
@@Comkill117 I guess Capcom's drop during that time is flipping from the PS to nintendo for the new MH games (tri, tri ult and onwards until XX). But then they realized what they had done wrong and dropped World/Iceborne on the PS4 and PC
As a Dance Dance Revolution and BEMANI fan, it hurt so much to see how Konami managed to ruin almost everything. Their Music games were awesome, but they lost so much of their glory.

"Every 60 seconds a minute passes"
the problem with konami is that they operate on the old japanese man mentality, profit over product, and it's a well known fact they never really understood the appeal of video games in the first place.
their best IPs were always born from letting their employees do as they please out of passion, not as a job obligation or a quick cash grab. ever since mgs4, they've gotten reaaally complacent with their IPs, but it's not like the senile gamblers on the slots even know wtf MGS or castlevania are.
that feeling when your favorite youtuber posts
After reading the comment and then looking at your profile pic feels different.
Konami put in a valiant effort to be considered more disgusting than EA
The 47 dislikes are from Konami employees being held at gun point.
I still can't forgive them what they did to one of my favourite RPG series of all time, Suikoden.
Post-Kojima Konami Employees Sneaking Out of Konami without getting caught challenge
(This is apart of their Metal Gear training)
You have to wonder how hard can one company fall from grace.
Back when I played through SuperHot, I couldn't remember that one code you must enter at one point, so I entered the Konami code and it actually worked!
Konami is my most hated videogame company, because cancelling Silent Hills was the most tragic thing that happened in videogame industry. Yes, Death Stranding wasn't a masterpiece, but it doesn't mean that SH would have been bad
should've mentioned koji igarashi too who shaped the modern castlevania. he left konami and started his own game Bloodstained
Only thing of konamis I play is Yu-Gi-Oh, never really been into any of their video games
The fucked up thing about it is they wouldn't ever sell those ips even knowing that they aren't going to do anything but make a shitty version of it and then abandon it and leave it to rot because its better off a dead franchise than in the hands of someone else who cares about it and will make money from it
My opinion on Metal Gear Solid V is thus:
Unfinished though it may be, it is one of the greatest games of all time.
Now they're pachinko company :(
Really sucks, especially when we couldn't get another decent MGS or MGR game anymore
"Konami Suck." (pause)
That's all I need to hear

Just imagine how us gradius fans feel
We’ll see about that, MGS3 Snake eater Remake will be Konami’s last chance.
Konami is literally holding both their employees and their franchises hostage.
I agree with every single point. It is truly frustrating to see how Konami treats their own franchises and most passionate fans like shit. Just giving them the middle finger at every opportunity they have. I go as far to say that they make Electronic Arts look respectful and wise in comparison.
Platinum Games & Kojima's team deservingly should own the most rights to MGRR
Platinum Games, Kojima’s team, or Nintendo should own all of Koonami’s assets, but Koonami itself should absolutely go bankrupt, and never make anything ever again ever.
I'd nominate Embracer, but, well, I haven't heard much from them ever since they bought most of Squeenix's IP collection.
Probably. Game dev takes time and tends to happen behind closed doors.
Thank you for reminding everyone how crappy corporate ethics don’t just live in Activision, EA, and Blizzard.
Another company falling to the delusion of “money over quality”. Seriously, how can companies be so awful to their workers AND (as a result) their fans?
Trully astounding ain't it
Goddamnit, Konami! Solid Snake died for THIS?! You're breaking my heart... That "Sam Fisher's farewell to Snake" video still hits me.
I swear if Konami does NFTs for Metal Gear I will obliterate someone’s consciousness.
I want to OWN a plushie of Raiden not a receipt saying I do
And in one year, more and more people are sick of Kojima and his movie game bullshit.
As a Yu-gi-oh players I will 100% agree F Konami
I had that theory that the idea for surveillance cameras in Metal Gear itself came from Konami, but I didn't dare post it...
i use to love Konami but that was years ago. the Konami i knew is dead.
