Being an American Chinese visit India regularly for work, here’s my take. I send a design to Shenzhen and get a working prototype in my LA office in a week; I send the same design to Pune, I don’t hear back in a week. Both Indian and Chinese are smart, warm and friendly people but I never hear Chinese compare the two countries, they mostly compare to US but Indian I know constantly bring up China as competition. I feel Chinese have more sense of urgency to catch up with the west and Indian feel comfortable. The 18th century invasion from the west and Japan leaves unbelievable resentment and shame in Chinese society, it’s a huge driving force to their advancement and nationalism no less than how Jewish feels about Nazi. My mother never touched Japanese food, never used Japanese products in her whole life and taught us not to neither; and I never did when she was alive. I visited Nanjing WW2 Japanese genocide museum once, I went in for five minutes and ran to restroom to puke, how can any human being do this type of crime to another is simply sickening. I also saw in Shanghai displaying a 18th century British sign replica said “no Chinese and dog are allowed”. Beijing keeps the British, US, France, Germany, Dutch….alliance burned down summer palace untouched. I think Chinese are using these to remind themselves constantly what they need to do.

Some times later after the China visit, my country's PM visited India 🇮🇳 and he came back with EVEN BIGGER promised Indian investments. Apparently, India wanted to Outdo China in investing in my country.

Since 1990, Bangladeshi grew 14.56 times, Pakistani 9.41 times and Indian grew 8.17 times. Then we will see how fast and better off the Indian economy really is. Watch out for Indonesia (grew 10.04 times). They’re the next one to surpass India in spite of severe populations disparities. Different culture is a very significant factor in advancing one’s economy. The next phase will be very crucial. Because, it’s the post harvest of low hanging fruits period. in india case they have political disability for more than decades plus there leaders who look at wrong direction with garbage foreign policy india open its marketing in just early 2000 mean while china did that way back .

@@kojotasunashe8547: Chairman Mao liberated China & said "The Chinese people have stood up." After defeating & driving out the nationalist KMT, he set about organising the country on Marxist principles. No elitism, no strata; it's to be an egalitarian society with women holding up half the sky.
However, his economics failed miserably & famine caused widespread suffering & starvation. Approx 30 mil died, according to western estimates.
When Deng Xiaoping took over, China was still closed to the world & under severe US sanctions. He visited Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia where overseas Chinese were industrial tycoons. Then came the visit of Henry Kissinger & Richard Nixon who opted for engagement. China was given entry to WTO. 14 cities along the coast were open to foreign investment.. SEZ! As US & EU corporations built manufacturing plants, people from China's interior migrated to the cities to get work. Western capitalism found in China abundant hard working people who accepted low pay. The corporations shipped back the finished goods & earned billions.
That's the start of poverty alleviation when 800 million were lifted out of poverty.. based on World Bank data. A phenomenon in early spring is the largest migration worldwide. Hundreds of million travelled back to villages & hamlets to celebrate the Spring Festival & see their parents/children.
These are the factors impacting the living standards of the Chinese over 4 decades.
If Deng followed Mao's concepts, China would have remained in poverty, much like Soviet Union & East Germany.

Before 1840 , India was ruled CONTINUOUSLY by the Mogul Empire for Four Hundred years . The country prospered during their Rule because of the new land and other reforms introduced by them .
They destroyed the dominance of the Brahmins on the society by driving them out of the temples which was enslaving a majority of the people.

The populations of China and India are both about 5 times that of USA. If China, with a population similar to India but with a GDP 5 times that of India, that means the economy of the USA is about 25 times that of India's per capita.

Not exactly. China is 'market socialist', where the key economic drivers (e.g. banking, energy, healthcare, public transportation, telecommunications, and heavy industry) are owned and managed by the State, but the rest is market driven, although profit is low due to high effective taxation. India is 'protectionist capitalist', where they don't allow foreigners to make or take profit.

Imho, the difference can be traced back to 1949. If India had a revolution like China did, the national resources would be made available for the benefit of all. Instead, the Indian elites hold on to their privileges, disregarding the needs of the nation and its people. Along with resource ownership, it's made worse with the corruption culture. China also has corruption, but not as bad. The media often make stories of Chinese leaving China. True, but the Indian situation is the same if not worse.

    I'm a Filipino myself and here's why.
Popular democracy impedes more than it assists. Being such, India had plentiful of interest groups whose goals are in conflict with those of others. Hence, nothing could ever get done without offending the other group or at least sacrificing it to please others resulting to at best shoddy work. You won't have that in totalitarian China, whose people were already used to such type of government since Qin Shi Huang Di became the first emperor.
The raison d'etre of most Indians revolve around religion. Their religion is based on dharma wherein respect and reverence to nature is emphasized. That's why it is normal for them to bathe in dirty and murky rivers, to defecate all over the place, and to make street food with the dirtiest of means, because it is being seen as a natural process. Modernity is something that their dharmic faiths didn't account to or at worst indifferent, the animist idea coming from dharmic faiths being the nature already provides everything and their is no need to modernize still ring across their psyche. Humanist and atheist China, which had been so as early as 2000's BC around the time where Yu the Engineer served as emperor and proved that humans don't need gods and they can be gods themselves by reshaping nature by how they like it starting with building dams along the Yellow River, doesn't have such a thing.
So there you have it, two countries with differing beliefs, philosophies and governments.

You failed to mention the most basic reasons. India had not been one nation.until 1947. The great empires of the past never conquered the south. The British governed part of India and compelled hundreds of kingdoms to submit, while maintaining their own government. That means even today, India is very divided culturally. India has 15 official languages. That contributes to divided markets and political hindrance to building infrastructure.
India has a caste system that is thousands of years old. That hinders education and efficiency of employing talent wherever you find them. Religion may be the reason why women participation in the labor market is so low.
Finally, India's democracy is not a reason why infrastructure did not get built. The US is also a democracy. That was not a problem when they wanted to build the interstate highway system.
