- Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger to discuss the future of Sheldon Keefe in Toronto, who could be his replacement if the Maple Leafs choose to move on from Keefe, is Brendan Shanahan safe going forward, does the noise in the Toronto market influence the team’s decisions, the likelihood of Mitch Marner being a Maple Leaf next season and what does a change of scenery look like from Marner’s perspective and the organization’s viewpoint. They are also joined by former MLBer and the Beadle and Decker co-host Cody Decker to discuss the expectation for Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. going forward and why the duo’s time is up in Toronto, has he ever seen a fall from grace like Alek Manoah and more. They wrap up the show by making their Wells Fargo PGA picks brought to you by TaylorMade.

Hayes talking about Marner taking less money and actually winning. I'm sorry, we know it's not going to work, we have plenty of evidence. Marner showed absolutely ZERO grit in the playoffs, he backed down and shied away from the spotlight. The idea of him taking less is also laughable, look at history to predict the future.
If he took 8m it might work. You could surround him with grinders and let him just be a setup guy.
@@people3865 They demanded max dollar last time, nothing will change this time. He's never taking $8 million
@@shootermcgavin3077 No, I don't think he is either. But, a man can dream lol
If Marner decides to just ignore the Leaf's decision to attempt to trade him and guarantee that they get nothing in return, then the Leaf's should guarantee that the closest that Marner gets to a sheet of ice over the next year, is if he decides to spend practice time with the Kitchener Rangers.

With the unlimited purse strings MLSE has someone has to stand up and put the Marner camp in place. Who will it be.
@@lindsaydoke9308: unfortunately, no one within MLSE will do that and Marner has a perfect argument in his defense. "YOU GAVE THE MONEY TO THE OTHER GUYS". So, either Shanahan will extend Marner at a number near Auston and Willy or he will force Marner to accept a trade. The problem will be as follows: 1) if you don't extend Marner, he will come back with a terrific personal best final year, head into free agency and the Leaf's will get NOTHING for him. 2) they will work out a trade for him during the summer, be forced to retain 50% of his contract, get next to nothing in return and still have a cap problem. 3) sign marner for over $11 million and waste whatever window that Auston and Willy give them and commit Leaf's fans to the same results for the next four years at least.
Lmao should have thought about that years ago when you gave in to nylander. Nylander screwed you hard.
Noodlles, marner is the only one not going into the hard areas. The only one playing soft hocky in the playoffs making 11 million. Lets be honest about this. Marner is on his own here.
Everyone keeps thinking that Vladdy might get back to the year he was runner up MVP, but people seem to forget that he was playing in a minor league park for half his games
I love Mitch! He has to go! We need the cap space to move forward and he just does not perform in play offs!!
Nor does Matthews.
Marner is not Kane, Kucherov, Panarin, Stone. He is not an impactful winger in the playoffs. Nylander is a little better but even he is 2 million overpaid. Overpaying Marner would crush all chances of bringing a Cup during the Matthews era. Trade him, and finally get some top 4 defencemen.
@Spike10111, totally agree with you about the Nylander contract. Personally I think besides Matthews, they’re all overpaid. To put it just on Marner isn’t right. I mean he definitely needs to be better, but a bunch of them do. I mean we pay Reilly over 7 million, like a #1 defensemen and he’s not. Maybe a #3 or 4. Tavares is getting paid 11 million a year. I would personally approach those two about waiving their NTC first. Then move on to Marner.
Any of the contending teams don’t pay more than 2 guys over 10 million.
Who is giving a top 4D for Mitch?
@@people3865🎯
Trade Marner and you won't see the playoffs for another decade. In fact, now that Keefe has been fired, you won't have to worry...you won't see Toronto win the cup for at least a decade. When a coach gets fired it triggers a rebuild as the new coach has different players in mind. If we make the playoffs at all in the next decade it will be a miracle. And ask yourself...did Treliving build a Stanley Cup in Calgary? We just got a major downgrade.
@@scruffybearbreaks8774 Salty Flames fan much? Lmao

“He will be a god” again if he succeeds. Love it that we will keep this quote going forward.
Going be busy Summer for the Leafs with players like Brodie, Klingberg Timmins trying to move, Muzzin and Murray contract expires this year, and Giordano getting close to retirement
Mitch not scoring in the playoffs and being whiny doesn’t help his cause.
It's not just his playoff points, it's his general playoff play. He plays like he's terrified out there. In contrast, does anyone think that Marner can score a goal like Miles Wood did in OT the other night for Colorado vs Dallas? The drive and will power to lean in and force that play, wow. Or even make an assist like Tavares had against Boston on what became a winning goal by Knies? Does anyone think Marner is capable of that type of play? No, not a chance. Marner isn't leaning into anyone--he hides in open ice away from the opposition when play gets tough and difficult.
What is Marner worth though? Everyone is making it sound like he is easy to trade but who is taking on a playoff choker making that kind of money? Leafs are stuck with him.
it is the players right, however the instant it gets out that mitch has declined to waive, he will get destroyed in the media, probably even booed next season
If they can do that to Sundin (did they, I'm not sure) then Marner is fodder. Marner may be a prolific points producer, but there's more to a local hero than jus points production. Wendel, Dougy, Mats, all fan favourites but that Batman saying, live long enough to be a villain rings true. It doesn't matter how much you've done for the team, when it no longer suits their interests, you've gone from friend to foe.
@MisterMister5893 All good players that never won a Stanley Cup with the leafs so what exactly was the comparison why because they are fan favorites they never brought the cup here either
I'm not a Leafs fan but..... What if this core had been led by wendyl Clark or Gilmour those guys define what heart is! Wasted talent on this franchise it's sad! They just love their money more than work for it!
If Marner wants 8yrs then he'll need to be moved, the Leafs have control of this. Marner will not engage in any physical play and is a perimeter player in the playoffs, he is hardly noticeable
Just a random question, which is totally unrealistic, but fun to ask: Would anyone trade Marner for Malkin straight up? Marner is 27 and has one more year left at a cap hit of $10.9 million while Malkin is 38 and has next year plus one more year with a cap hit of $6.1 million per year. Just curious what people would say.
Wouldn't it make more sense for Tavares, and if your answer is something along the lines of it's not worth it that should answer your question
@@patrickgoulet8170 Tavares makes contributions in faceoffs and defensive play, and he makes an effort. The play where he leaned in and setup the OT winning goal is something Marner never would do. Oh and who scored the goal last year to win Round 1? Is he worth 11 million at this point, no, but he contributes in tough games, which is much more than Marner does.
If Marner was smart right now he’d have his management find him an elite deal in Tampa or Seattle or somewhere close n cool
MLSE, Rogers, Bell. Everything these corporations touch turns to crap
Marner hired personal security for game 7 and refused to speak to reporters......and when he did his locker clean out days later he had a small list of reporters he would speak to and of those reporters none of them were allowed to ask him tough questions. What a coward that pos is 😂😂😂😂

Marner isn't going to waive his NMC. His agent is notable for getting his clients to free agency in their contract year. He'll either get an extension or hit the market.
He can be traded and still walk to free agency. Getting traded doesn't change that. Not that he will, but I wish he would.

Marner will play for the Leafs
Marner needs to be told by management he will not be resigned and that he sits in the press box or give the team a list of teams he’d be willing to be traded to. Someone in management needs to have the stones to make this happen
Oh that will work well. Sit one of your best players in the press box. Who will blink first lol. Plus, that will really make Toronto a destination. Marner will sit and wait for UFA. Toronto will miss playoffs in a year they have already traded their first round pick. I don’t think Toronto plans on punting the season.
@@garycochrane4829 they won’t miss the playoffs next year if they play hardball with Mitch, I love the guy but he’s not a playoff performer and it’s clear he can’t handle the pressure in TO. This current generation of players are more concerned with how many sheets they can get and it’s not about the cup for most. A message needs to be sent to these players
Stupid. Good thing you're not running a team.
@@JoeG1975 The team played better as a whole while he was hurt during the regular season. The only thing that suffered was Matthews' goal scoring, but the players Matthews played with scored more. Team win.
Cody is wrong about Bo. Bo is and will continue to be a stud once he breaks out of this slump. And current Jays front office has earned absolutely no rights to start a second rebuild. Them and the coaches have to go before the rebuild is even considered> Even Hayes talking smack about Bo, don't think he's watched much Bo the last couple years
The Leafs were fun & interesting to watch. At least they make the playoffs and are good in the regular season. 😀
What nonsense. If Marner refuses to be dealt on a sign and trade he loses the eighth year. It will cost him $11. The leafs can’t afford another $11 million forward.
What can they afford oh let me guess another year of overpaid underwhelming goaltending poorly coached players or a.glaring lack of team defense and structure but ya let's blame a player that yes makes huge money to put points on the board well he does that what I gather from all the other fans is you all expect him to put the team on his back and drag them to a cup with shitty team defense and really bad goaltending and a coach who really shouldn't be coaching a team in the nhl playoffs to begin with let's look at the whole picture here Marner is not the problem we'll not the biggest problem the leafs have got to stop paying for broken players and aging players that are nearing retirement. Do that and you might save enough money to pay for some team defense maybe a proper 3rd liner not a run of the mill spot filler
@@darrelldart4573 obviously never played the game, or any other team sport. Giving primacy to individual stats over team results or even in opposition to team results is the glaring problem. The reason the leafs have to resort to retreads and never will be’s is obvious. that is all they can afford when 4 players make over 50 % of the cap.
Noodles - why are you basing his new contract on the regular season, while the title of the video is about him waiving his NMC because of what he does in the PLAYOFFS?Why trade a guy worth ten million - because he flops in playoffs? SO again - how is he worth ten million if he flops in playoffs? Worth ten million to WHO? The fans? TEN MILLION for a decade of playoff flops is team friendly???The definition of insanity..Worst take I've ever heard on this show - and believe me there's a lot of material there.
Just tell him.. We aren't resigning you. You can play for us for one more year, or move on now.
He’s not going anywhere. MLSE got themselves into this mess. Now they’ve gotta deal with it 😂
Maybe not for 1 year, but after that Marner is unsigned. I'd love to see Mitch hit the open market to see how other teams really value him. I don't think he gets 10 million per year from anyone.
Every Leaf fan wants to run the wrong guy out of town.
Compare Sidney Crosby to John Tavares, both captains of their team and paid well. But that is where it stops. Tavares has done nothing to improve his game since robbing the Leaf vault. Crosby works on improving his game constantly.
Tavares has to go.
That is how you measure a player for their role and salary.
Leaf fans are the biggest winers and least knowedgable fans in the NHL. They don't seem to realize that an injured Marner sitting in the stands is no good to the team. That's what his team mate has to do.
What did Samsinov bring in the playoffs.
The OT goal was entirely his fault, he had plenty of time to stop that play from happening. He lost 3 of the 4 games.
For 57 years the Leafs fans have made this organization rich when they didn't deserve it.
This doesn't fit the narrative they're currently pushing down people's throats so it won't gain much traction even though it's the truth
Sorry boys. The only possible change that I can see happening with the Leafs is the coach. Everything else will probably stay the same.
Less money LOL, like 6 mil less aint happening and it's what they need. Or the Leafs can play hard ball and sit him until he waives. Just sayin.
Scruffy.. are you high or drunk best of core 4 when Marner is the most overrated biggest floater out of the core 4 points for minutes played useless he was the same player in junior
Tkachuk and Dvorak.,carried his floating ass Marner is a weak player
He just wants to play.
If you can't win, don't play.
Why is he out there?
He just wants to play the game.
Just ditch Mitch. Get rid of his cap hit, even for nothing. ASAP. Cap space is worth that much to the rest of the team's success. He isn't giving the team anything in the playoffs anyway. As for JT, ask him what he's looking for after his final year in terms of money. If it's a nice hometown discounted deal to stay, great, suck up his final year at the big money and keep him on a nice deal going forward in an appropriate role. If not, then "re-evaluate." But Marner is just dead cap space for playoff success; so, his contract just needs to go.
Need your head examined if you think you can harass someone and get away with it. 😅There's something called NHLPA that would have his back. Why in the world he give up free agency and not have all teams bud on him and make filthy rich!
Id trade marner to have a top4 5M defenseman and top 5M starter goalie and still have money leftover
What team is dumb enough to do this? They don’t exist. The rest of the league has never valued Marner the way Leafs nation has. I seem to recall that players poll from teams around the league that players voted Marner as most overrated in the league. He’s an excellent, high end, soft skill perimeter winger who has a keen sense of getting a goal scorer the puck in the slot, excellent on the rush and skilled zone entries, but little to no intangibles and his value is halved in playoff hockey.
Fans that have watched many years of playoff hockey will point out that the goals and assists that are scored in the regular season, are not the goals and assists scored in the playoffs. Goals aren’t coming from backhand toe dragging, cut backs, dipsy doodling past bottom feeder teams’ dmen, etc.
Playoff goals are usually from chip and chase, extended o-zone time from cycling the puck, winning board battles, net front positioning, rebounds, 3rd chances, etc, Garbage goals. Goals resulting from sheer will and work.

I don't understand why Marner, currently in his prime, would risk future contract negotiations by playing hardball with the Leafs. The team could scratch him from the lineup, demote him to the 3rd or 4th line, or even play him on the 2nd pp. Is being petty really worth it? I don't think so.
You just described Toronto being petty and punting their season, in a year where they have already traded their first round pick. Have you ever seen a team do that for a star player?
You gonna put a 90-point player on the 3rd or 4th line? Talk about a stupid concept.
Yep… 6 minutes a game on the fourth line
He already strong-armed the leafs with his daddy, into signing his monster deal the first time. It will most likely happen again because Toronto is a spineless organization.
@@garycochrane4829That wouldn't punt the season lol. They'd still easily make the playoffs. Probably in the exact same spot as this year.
Best defensive forward, best PK guy, best stick handler, best at carrying the puck over the opposing blueline, crucial PP guy, best passer, best playmaker. How are the Leafs going to replace Marner?
Matthews is far superiorly defensively. The PK has been horrendous. Nylander has the best zone-entry numbers on the team. The PP disappeared at the most critical time. His secondary assists won't be missed.
Matthews literally just won the Selke.
a trade now for mitch is just agency one year early. stay why your leaving next year anyways , if he stays will they win with Mitch....................Friday we wont learn much
If they can get rid of his cap hit now, then they can use that to improve the team for next year instead of wasting a year to do it. Unless there's some d-man or goalie worth waiting a year for anyway??? Just to ask... But yes, it's highly unlikely they can get rid of him this year because I doubt he will waive his no trade.
Wrong dregs. Marners contract was not well earned
leafs never had an easy match any play offs mitch will find 10 mil he was over paid now watch what other teams will judge him
Maybe ask yourself how you replace his point production. If he didn't get hurt he would have had over 100points. It is a significant loss of offense. I haven't heard much talk about that.
Just trade him already! Tavares and Rielly too. And dump Shannahan. Jesus this team is slow.
Trading marner is about as stupid of a move as trading Hyman was
I can't stand Marner - his soft play, greed and for taking up a valuable cap spot on this team. I also can't stand Shannahan for putting marketing over winning and being incapable of seeing a leaf team beyond its current construction. Please Please Please - fire Shanny, Marner, Tavares, Reilley, Matthews and Masai
id say 8-9m for 6 years is what my mitch number would be,,, he is worth more, but thats what id offer or let him go so we can build in a different direction
If you keep these clowns together you can expect more of the same.

Judging analysts by their pro play is illogical. Some of the best hockey analysts have never played -- some of the best players are terrible at analyzing talent. It's two different skillsets. We don't hold other critics to this standard (e.g. we listen to movie critics who have never made a movie).
That's not an intelligent comment. Besides, hockey is not a hard sport to analyze and critique.
with this logic, your post is also irrelevant
I have lost all interest in TSN. Marner is the best one of the core 4. You dont get rid of your best players and expect to win the Stanley Cup. Obviously TSN is brainless when it comes to hockey.
