Rashid is the main hero of this story. Of all the heroes, he has the biggest personal stake. His friend was one of the hackers behind the Black Moons project, making him the one who would eventually deduce how to shut down said project. He has the most modern outlook (as of this story) and is sociable enough to get along with most people. His ending in the main story was also the most poignant, with his (now dead) friend leaving behind a pre-recorded message telling him to basically live his life to the fullest no matter what.

Ryu's character was partly inspired by a real Korean-Japanese fighter named Mas Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin Karate. There's a great Korean martial arts movie about him called, Fighter in the Wind (2004). Highly recommend.

Charlie really got shafted in the story...i mean what was the point of all the build-up and hype of bringing him back from the dead after all those years......and yea Bison kicks his ass, and then he fights him again and sacrafices himself for nothing doing literally nothing to bison. They really shitted on him in this game. He should have been the one to defeat Bison. Ryu basically had no real motive to defeat him. Charlie was murdered by him and they couldnt even let him get revenge,smh. Such a waste.
the legend he weakened bison so ryu could beat him, he even said he'd have his victory knowing he'd die , so he sacrificed himself so he could have his victory, seeing bison finally gone once and for all

Actually Nash said "I will achieve my victory", he didn't mean his sacrifice, but a real clean win over Bison. He even says "I will defeat you" while fighting Bison. He did defeat Bison, but Bison got another amp by the Black Moons, Rashid shut them down, but it was too late - Bison already got the amp, Nash says "A bit late" (to Rashid) and Bison one punches Nash.
Bison actually didn't die permanently. Ryu destroyed his body, but Bison's spirit remained unscathed, he's now in his Phantom state (in Ed's Character Story).

Guile taking infinite L's
dialogue is pretty cringey for the most part, sounds like it wasn't localized very well and more given a direct translation, but it looks nice. The story is also pretty confusing.
Maybe watching it in its native Japanese will give the story more weight and cohesiveness, but I find that hard to believe since it seems all the characters speak in SF2-style 1-sentence post-fight quips, and none of the visuals surrounding all of the dialog would seem to indicate that the Japanese version will be significantly better.

For example when the person hits them you won't see their hand because its too small, and destroys the whole meaning of hitboxes kinda.
Honestly, when you look at all the character stories and the narrative web they create in relation to General Story. It's a well thought and consistent story. The best Capcom has ever produced for a fighting game to date. It's incredibly charming and so very Street Fighter.

I bought it when first came out for £50. Got all the DLC's. I've spent nearly £200 on this game if i just think about it. It's bleedin disgrace that capcom is takin money to buy characters. Don't buy it! Well you can now, it's as cheap at £10-15 now the game. I was so hyped for this game but was let down coz of the price tags

I don't get why people hate this game. It could've been MUCH worse. All the new characters are cool, all the old characters stand out in their own way once again, and (unpopular opinion) the art style and animations are actually pretty great.

The first couple hours makes for a great movie. the last hour got silly. Gotta love that whole muscle spirit enthusiasm. Not to mention Laura and R. Mika's attire.
What I always hated about the cutscenes:
1. The English voice acting.
2. Bad jokes.
3. Bad lines.
4. Tries too hard to be emotional, dramatic and thrilling.
5. Half of the times, the characters fight each other for no reason.
6. There is no part 2 and part 3 to the general story in every season.
7. Replacing SFIV's anime cutscenes with retro-styled storyboard cutscenes.
8. Parts of the story that lead to nowhere but plot twists, after plot twists.
I don't get why everyone is complaining about Story Mode. This is the first time ever Capcom has gave Street Fighter a legitimate Story Mode(usually they're just individual stories for characters) and even flowed them consistently where each character gets their own spotlight and you guys still aren't satisfied.
Far from a flawless victory. Guilty Gear XRD's story is what I'd consider a flawless execution. I will concede that this is a step in the right direction for capcom

You need to stop giving Capcom excuses. Seriously? They had 8 years to make Street Fighter V better. They then give this game which is hardly any difference.
If you don't understand why the people are not satisfied (like myself), here's the possible answers for you:
1. Lack of Details
2. Poor Character and Story Development alike
3. Major Cliches that were stopped in most anime recent years
4. Lack of major characters in the series like Rose, Sagat, and some others (I know the developers said that they fight very similarly which is why they were removed, but they can use their titles to figure different approach of fighting style like Sagat called "The Emperor of Muay-Thai" right? Then apply his title into his fighting style)
5. A lot of Plot Armor
6. Graphics hardly differ (Maybe in fighting style a bit but that's it)
So there you go that should the reasons where most people might agree that this game is not the best game to buy.

The characters are all 20 years outdated. Heck, Karin herself(who was made in the late-90s) is literally a 90-styled himedere.
No one really buys fighting games for the story modes, if they did then they only care about the world-building. The lore in fighting games usually suck and everyone in the fighting game community knows this.
People who's seriously about playing it only want it for the online matches. Capcom delivered on that by revamping everyone's playstyle. Cammy is a prime example as she's 5x more smoother to play as than she was in her previous installments.
Capcom may not be at their prime anymore like they was in the late-90s/early-2000s and really went to being trash, but they did right by making SFV based around tournament players.

The thing about Ryu I love more than Jin is that he dosen't shun away his friends. It's probably why he didn't go off the deep end like Jin did. You know there were people who could've helped him with the Devil Gene, yet Jin just pushed them away and soon enough he started WW3 to just get rid of it, yet even after all that, he still has it. Ryu had a better way of fighting his demons, while Jin just blames his actions on his blood. To be fair the Devil Gene is uncontrollable and destructive. but it didn't make Jin start his war to rid it, he did that while he was still himself, all while justifying the war crimes he committed just draw out Azazel. Ryu understood that's one's greatest enemy is himself, Jin obviously blamed his own actions on what he was born with, ironically making him in the very thing he hated, while Ryu managed to save himself from the corruption of the Satsui no Hado time and time again.

I think this is rather good compared to the lack of stories SF had in the past. So according to canon in Champion edition:
1. Bison and Dhalsim are top tier.
2. No idea who Necalli is or his role.
3. Zangief is too Awesome, jumping from thousands of feet off a chopper and sword can't cut him.

Wtf am I the only who actually likes this story mode? Ok it hasn’t the best writing and some classic characters are not in the story, but for me it’s still entertaining. Hell, it’s a freaking fighter game, what did you expect? A Stanley Kubrick movie? Besides, this is the first time that capcom give to a sf game a proper story mode, yes they had years to make it, but still. People are never satisfied.
I enjoyed it as well. Yeah like that other commenter said, it's cliche...but as a first attempt, it wasn't a completely awful story mode. Could have been better but not terrible.
I'm just going to rebut you on principle here; a genre is never an excuse to have bad writing.
Reasoning always ends in complete disaster, take Michael Bay's Transformers as an example. The people behind those films didn't think telling a good story was important because "It's just an action movie" and the results were five of the greatest cinematic nightmares in history. The same goes for fighting games. Yes, no fighting game has had a masterpiece of a story yet, but if we don't keep pushing them, they'll continue to settle for less. We can acknowledge where they improve, to be sure. Street Fighter 5 is a massive improvement on the grounds actually having a story, but if they story has faults, they need to be pointed out so that they can improve. And no, it doesn't need to be Kubrick, don't be silly. Kubrick's films were well-written, but that doesn't mean that all well-written stories look like Kubrick. What you've done there is a classic example of "false equivalency".
Remember, nobody gets better if you keep giving them excuses to them to suck.
(Just a disclaimer, I haven't played SF5 nor have I watched the cutscenes. I'm here because I was curious enough to do a quick skip through it to see how it compared to MK or Injustice. My arguments here are purely based on a fundamental disagreement with your justification for your position, rather than disputing the position itself).

Has anyone ever made a story mode movie with the classic costumes? Since I think now everyone in Season 1 has their previous costume from their origin. I'd love to see a them all with their original outfits in this story mode.

I want to know how the hell F.A.N.G is able to do anything with those freaking sleeves.
What I expected: oh yeah Ryu's gonna save the world again by punching Bison
What I got: Rashid trying to find his friend and becoming my favourite character with a great character arc, and also Ryu punching Bison
I understand that Ryu has had more story/lore involving Akuma, but iirc Bison also wants his powers too. Why not explore that angle a little more? Would give Ryu more of a concrete reason of being against Bison beyond just being the good guy.

So, all these years Ryu has been fighting the Dark Hadou within him but he suddenly does a days worth of special training after getting a tiny bit of advice from Sim (Which it seems he might have already known anyway) and suddenly he's mastered it. What the fuck? Also, wasn't helping Ryu with the Dark Hadou Roses thing? And why wasn't she in the main story, she and Bison still share the same soul don't they?
On another note, it was kind of bullshit that Ryu was the one to end Bison when it should have been a Charley/Chun Li duo. Ryu already has Akuma as his true enemy. Charley was tortured and killed by Bison and Chun Li still has her fathers death to avenge. Or they could have went the Alpha route and had Akuma come in right before Bison's defeat and murder him (I think it was Alpha where that happened)
And lastly, Karin > Sakura.
Ironically, the same goes the Naruto versions as well.
Rose predicted that Ryu would be the one to defeat M. Bison.

the problem with fighting game story modes is that the characters arent part of a "real" coherent world.
this is why everything feels like its "then this happens, then this happens and then this happens" disjointed scenes.
their only goal was to give many characters screen time. they need to structure this differently.
You can hate the storyline but the voice actors and perfect

Heres to shitting all over this story:
Charlie Nash's resurrection is not explained. Yes, we know it is by Urien and Helen but still, the process is unknown.
Alex fights just once against Dhalsim. Dhalsim gives Alex advice. Naturally Alex doesn't show up anymore.
Urien fought once against Nash. He did appear afterwards, but his story is not really dealt with.
Cheerleading is apparantly a move. Nothing against that, but why isn't that playable?
Cammy pulls out a package from her ass.
That girl said she was in no danger at the start. Why would she? She knew the Shadaloo are bad people. Being inside the base is huge danger already.
Nash dreams of Necalli at the start. Naturally Nash does not fight Necalli afterwards.
Speaking of Necalli, what the hell is that thing's purpose? To be a makeshift Akuma while Akuma is out selling oranges? Oh wait, Akuma is in Tekken. Which shows that other companies care more for Capcom's characters than they themselves do. Another example will be Megaman.
Laura joins them. Naturally she does not fight anyone anymore. (Yea I saw her fight the dolls but you don't play as her.)
So, Marz died? But FANG lived apparantly? How?

To conclude,
The writing overall is terrible.
If there is anything I would actually like about this story, it's Rashid's overall goofiness, and his rage mode against FANG, and that message at the end. Honestly that is the only good thing in this story mode. Oh and the father son bonding of Ken.

As for FANG, it's his concept to survive. He even survived the destruction of the Shadaloo Base apparently.
Still, the writing is garbage.
The other story mode explained more than this story mode, and when we see a story mode who hasn't real cutscenes better than a story mode with them, it means that something is wrong with capcom
hey, i liked the story of sfv and the characters especially charlie, more then tekken 7, like seriously who in the hell liked the whole narrator monologue bs tekken did, plus the single character story modes in tekken weren't that mmm how can i say it shit, I'm not saying sfv had really really amazing story and writing but it made me feel something damit. something that tekken didn't do in terms of story and character wise, it made me care enough to play and watch this unlike tekken but still good game nonetheless and both games
I think the Alex thing though was just a reference to Street fighter 3 were he first appears in to fight Gill.
