  • TEN GREAT CHAMPIONS 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝟼𝟶'𝚜 & 𝟽𝟶'𝚜 _ VAIN
Vain (1966-1991) was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse that dominated Australian sprint racing in the period 1968-70, when he won 12 of the 14 races he contested and ran second in the other two. He went on to become a leading sire in Australia.
The chestnut colt was sired by the leading sire Wilkes (FR), and his dam, Elated, was by the good sire Orgoglio (GB), who sired 21 stakes winners that had 37 stakes wins. Elated was a good racemare that won 10 races, including eight in Melbourne. Although she produced several foals, Vain was her only stakes winner. _ wikki
Rarely in Australian turf history has there been a sprinter as powerful as Vain and so capable of utterly demolishing his opponents.
From the outset of his career it was evident that he had an extraordinary turn of foot. Winner of his first four starts in Melbourne, Vain was then taken to Sydney in the autumn of 1969 to challenge the best of the local talent. At that time no Victorian had yet won the Golden Slipper, and the contest was billed as a match race between the local champion, Special Girl, and the southern interloper. Vain left the record crowd in no doubt as to who was the superior. Jumping to an early lead Vain ran the field ragged, and won by four lengths easing down.
As a three-year-old at the Melbourne Spring Carnival of 1969, Vain embarked on his greatest triumph, winning the Craven A Stakes on Derby Day by 12 lengths, followed by the Linlithgow Stakes on Oaks Day and the George Adams Handicap on the final day.
Retired early in 1970 because of a leg injury, Vain enjoyed a long and successful career as a sire at Widden Stud. He was Australian champion sire in 1983-84, and two of his progeny, Sir Dapper and Inspired, won the Golden Slipper Stakes.
Vain was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2003 - racing victoria

over 7 furlongs as early three year old. Absolute freak. Best horse i have seen by far. Col Tidy that great bookmaker punter and owner of Zeditave 14 wins -17 starts said he was the best horse he had ever seen.

The most brilliant horse i have ever seen race in Australia and that includes Winx. Would have loved to have seen Todman.
Ken Callander thinks Vain would have beaten Todman over 1600. Never seen a sprinter that would even get close to Vain over
    1200 or 1400.

@@48tilt The highs light of his career was when beat Special Girl in the slipper,up to the slipper she was winning by ten lengths on the bit, at odds of up to 40 to 1 on,George Moore said she was the best two year he had ever ridden, and he rode Tulluch as a 2yr old.Well Vain blew her of in the first few furlongs and won pulling up by 4 lengths, And beating Darly's Joy in the George Adams, absolutely toy with him and he went on to win the derby and the cox plate as well as some big wins in the US ,he was not an easy beat, yet Vain treated him with contempt that day.

Vain was a freak. Pushed to the limit as an early three year old. Thrown in over the mile against the best performed post war Australasian horse ever to race in America the mighty Daryl's Joy. Never in a million years would that have happened with that protected species Black Caviar. One start at five over 1400 LOL.
Tommy Smith never raved about other horses other than his own. Never forget the look on his face after the Craven A after 12 length win.. He was lost for words. Smashes the Flemiington 7f track record as an early three year old. Smashed the Australian record for two year olds over 6f in the Champagne by 10 lengths.. I saw all his Sydney runs.
Beat best sprinter miler in the land Black Onyx by six lengths as an early three year old.
Most brilliant horse i have seen above Winx and Kingston Town and they were both fantastic horses.
Freaks like Vain and Crisp take on the near impossible win races and run times and occasionally get beaten .

@@48tilt Yes she started 40 to one on and 10 to one on,I'm from Melb, and we knew Vain was good but this filly in Sydney was winning at ease. I personally thought she would beat Vain,as it was I think he broke her heart she was never the same horse after that race, possibly got injured chasing him? She was an absolute beautifully breed horse, out of Weona Girl sired by the mighty Todman. He beat Darly's Joy which you mentioned who went on to be one of the best horses to go to the States, from memory he was voted the second best horse one year, but in the Craven A,he also had to beat Nz best filly Woodley Leigh I think it name was ,she went on to win the Oaks. And he really did a Phar Lap in the 69 spring carnival,he raced 3 times in a week and won every race, try getting a modern horse to race more than twice a year these days? The other horse that I felt was in his class or close to it was Manikato,a magnificent animal.

Still remember standing there stunned after the race. Couldn't believe what i had just seen . The fastest ever time by an Australian two year old over 6f.and wins by 10. Yes Special girl was winning by big margins. Who could argue with George Moore. Watched Vain win the Slipper from the ledger at Rosehill. Remember they bet 9-2. Can't remember what Special Girl was but she never raised a gallop. Something wrong with her and never the same. Yes all the experts said Special Girl would win. Not even close . Would have been nice to see them battle it out in the straight.

For all of that you'd still take the million dollars. It was a good horse and any hype, and there is always hype, was justified, but there would be training and stabling fees, race nomination charges, and so on, ten percent of stakes winnings to the jockey and also the trainer. Take the million dollars. Except that the million most probably would have to be split 5 or 6 ways. Say 5 ways. An accord to put it all permanently in the bank at 8 % interest indefinitely. Everyone on $ 16,000 per annum for life as of 1970. $ 16,000 per annum as of the early 1970s was real swanky stuff.
